Summit Entertainment (The Twilight franchise) has announced the release date for the upcoming film Red. In case you’re not familiar, the film features Bruce Willis as Paul Moses, a former CIA assassin, who after years of retirement ends up hunted by the government for the things he knows. Red has been set for release on October 22, 2010.
The film, based off the mini-series by Warren Ellis (Transmetropolitan) and illustrator Cully Hamner, has an A-list ensemble cast lined up including Morgan Freeman, Helen Mirren, John C. Reilly, Mary-Louise Parker, Brian Cox, Richard Dreyfuss and just announced the other day, James Remar (Dexter).
The film is being directed by Robert Schwentke (The Time Traveler’s Wife), from a script by Jon and Erich Hoeber, who gave us another recent comic-book adaptation, Whiteout.
According to THR’s Heat Vision Blog, John C. Reilly and Mary-Louise Parker are now in negotiations to join the cast of Red, Summit Entertainment’s adaptation of the Wildstorm/DC Comics miniseries written by Jon and Erich Hoeber and being directed by Robert Schwentke. If they do end up signing up for the film, they will join a cast that already includes Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman and Helen Mirren.
Originally published in 2003 and 2004, Red was co-created by writer Warren Ellis and artist Cully Hammer. It centers on a former black-ops agent Paul Moses (Bruce Willis), now in retirement, who has to contend with younger, more high-tech assassins who want to kill him and keep his former exploits from going public. Naturally, the first hit squad fails and alerts Moses that he’s being targeted. So, he goes on the offensive in order to stay alive.
If cast, Reilly would play a retired CIA agent who is paranoid that everyone is out to kill him. Parker would play Willis’ character’ love interest, a federal pension worker who becomes embroiled in the Willis character’s struggle to stay alive. Red is expected to begin filming in January in Toronto with an projected release later in 2010.
We have a decent load this week, from the conclusion to the exceptional Planetary to quite a number of Marvel books worth your time. Planetary #27 is the conclusion to Warren Ellis and John Cassaday’s brilliant series. Combining pop culture commentary, with a twisted spin that Ellis is known for and the direction of Astonishing X-Men artist John Cassaday. There was a preview in the back of Ex Machina #45, which had me excited for this issue.
From Marvel, there is a ton of good stuff. First, we have the premiere of Phil Jimenez on Astonishing X-Men alongside Warren Ellis. Its weird, you know? We have a Planetary/Astonishing X-Men crossover this week and I am looking forward to that ten fold.
Now I’m a giant Rick Remender fan, and this premieres his new ongoing series at Marvel, Doctor Voodoo with Billy Tan. If you like this I strongly recommend Rick’s series Fear Agent and The End League from Dark Horse. Following that we have Ultimate Comics Spider-Man #3. The first two issues were spectacular, and David Lafuente was born to draw Spider-Man. This is easily one of the best reads in comics.
Finally, we have the return of Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips Criminal with “The Sinners.” As always, we here at The Flickcast care about what you read, so leave us a comment and let us know what you liked/didn’t like from this week’s comics. EX MACHINA #45

My favorite series of the last couple of years is beginning to wind down and I’m getting quite sad about it. This issue picks up where we left off with New York City Mayor Mitchell Hundred discussing the effects of the previous arc and how Village Voice reporter Suzanne Padilla may be on to the White Box.
Our Mayor who can talk and control machines created The White Box around his election night. Padilla was convinced that it helped elect Hundred as Mayor. What happened was the White Box went off and implanted itself in Padilla’s brain, in a similar manner that the device that gave Hundred his powers.
Ex Machina is essentially The West Wing mixed in with some super heroics and tracks a retired super hero during his first and only term as New York City mayor. With five issues left, Padilla possessed by the White Box, she is slowly picking off members of Hundred’s cabinet. Who knows what she has planned or for that matter Vaughan.
The question we have now is what will Vaughan be doing after Ex Machina concludes? He’s left the writer’s room for Lost and his spec script, Roundtable, is a modern day re-imagining of the Arthur legend. To say the least his life as a writer is expanding and if he has any time for comics now post-Ex Machina I’ll be quite pleased.
Earlier today, we posted a story on the first trailer for Marvel Anime’s Wolverine, which looked great, but had a unique style that was a bit different from the rugged Canadian we all know and love. With the second trailer from the new line of Warren Ellis’ direct-to-DVD hits, we get something a bit closer to both Iron Man’s comic history — and also a bit of the film’s aesthetic.

Marvel had a pretty big weekend here in San Diego for the 40th Annual Comic-Con. Among the announcements made was that a new umbrella would form under Marvel’s studio, developing direct-to-DVD Anime titles of some of their classic characters, with comics legend Warren Ellis at the helm.
The first poster was released earlier in the weekend, and now the first trailer has hit the web. Check out the trailer for Marvel Anime’s Wolverine below, Anime Wolverine hits DVD stores (and probably your shelves at home) in 2010, and check in later for another new trailer from the studio.
In a world where people are spending less on things like comics, companies often have to try to do different things to keep readers interested and entertained. Comic companies, and in particular the big ones like DC and Marvel, often have “events” like “Final Crisis” and “Civil War” to help keep sales brisk.
They also sometimes have other tactics up their sleeves like improving the color and printing of comics and coming up with new and innovative ways to produce comic covers. On that subject, Marvel has come out with something new: Foilogram Covers.
I won’t try to explain it but instead, will leave it to the experts in the form of the official Marvel press release. Be sure to check out the larger covers after the break. There are very few constants in this world, but moviegoers can rest easy knowing that, for the past 21 years, Bruce Willis has made consistent action films and while they may not all be consistently “good” (I’m looking at you, Hudson Hawk), John McClane keeps going strong, spitting out quips and blowing up city blocks. According to The Hollywood Reporter, at the fresh age of 54, Willis is once again setting his sights on the comic book world, as he’s now in talks for the lead an adaptation of Warren Ellis’ graphic novel RED.
Published by Wildstorm and DC, the story revolves around Paul Moses, a retired CIA agent living in seclusion. A new director is appointed to the CIA, who uncovers all of the heinous activities that Moses had done under employment of the agency, and changes the status of former Agent Moses from “Green” to “Red”, thus signing for his assassination. (Sounds a bit too close to the plot of the USA series Burn Notice, right?)
The adaptation of the series was initially announced in June of last year, when Summit Entertainment picked up the rights for the Ellis’ book. The film is being scripted by the team of Eric and Jon Hoeber, who just finished the script for this year’s Whiteout, starring Kate Beckinsale and The Spirit’s Gabriel Macht. Bruce Willis will next be seen in the Disney thriller (?) Surrogates, and is also attached to Kevin Smith’s buddy cop film A Couple of Dicks, and a live-action adaptation of the video game Kane & Lynch. Busy guy!
