As with writers, Directors are pretty high on our list of important pieces of the film and TV making puzzle. If writers are the initial creative force that takes an idea from nothing and makes it into something, directors are the force that shapes that something into a clear vision and fulfills its potential for greatness. Or, they get it as close as it’s ever going to get.
With that in mind, the Directors Guild of America President Taylor Hackford today announced the five nominees for the DGA Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Feature Film for 2011.
“The directors nominated this year for the Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Feature Film Award have each demonstrated an inspired command of the medium. The fact that their prodigious talents have been recognized by their peers is the highest honor a director can achieve,” said Hackford. “I offer my most sincere congratulations to each of the nominees.”
The winner will be named at the 64th Annual DGA Awards Dinner on Saturday, January 28, 2012, at the Grand Ballroom at Hollywood & Highland.
The nominees are (in alphabetical order):
WOODY ALLEN
Midnight in Paris
(Sony Pictures Classics)
Mr. Allen’s Directorial Team:
Unit Production Managers: Matthieu Rubin, Helen Robin
First Assistant Director: Gil Kenny
Second Assistant Director: Delphine Bertrand

The nominations for the 2012 Film Independent Spirit Awards are out. These awards highlight the best in independent cinema and have often helped Academy Awards voters who don’t see indie films realie there’e more to life than what they get at the local multi-plex. Not that Academy Awards voters actually ever go to a multi-plex either.
Looking over the list we can guess what you’re thinking: where’s Michael Fassbender’s nomination for Shame? We don’t know either. We are, however, very happy to see Ryan Gosling, Nicolas Winding Refn and Albert Brooks get nods for their work on Drive. Great movie and great performances.
Here’s all the nominees:

Here’s a new trailer for director Alexander Payne’s latest film The Descendants. It features George Clooney, who seems to be doing a movie every week these days, as an estranged father forced to question the events of his life.
The films also features a strong ensemble cast in addition to Clooney including Shailene Woodley, Beau Bridges, Robert Forster, Judy Greer, Matthew Lillard, Nick Krause, Amara Miller, Mary Birdsong, Rob Huebel and Patricia Hastie. That’s quite a few known and up-an-coming actors.
The film closed the New York Film Festival on Sunday night and has received a great deal of buzz, much like Payne’s previous film Sideways. It will hit theaters on November 18.
Until then, check out the latest trailer after the break.

When does a film not need a trailer to get you excited to see it? While most people need to see what the film is about before deciding whether it is worth their time, I can sometimes be satisfied knowing that there is strong talent that going into making the film. If a film has a talented director with a reliable track record, or has managed to pull together a unique cast, that should be reason enough to want to go and see that movie.
Each of the trailers this week has an element that alone should get you intrigued enough to watch it. We have a couple independent films with strong casts, a sequel to the great animation, and a fun 3D experience.

Right off the bat this film feels like a great feel-good indie with strong characters and honest performances. Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Hesher, 500 Days of Summer, Inception) alone is one of the most talented young actors working today. And Seth Rogan (who is also producing), while fresh and talented in everything he does, could use this type of role to break out of this Apatow comedy type-casting.
Additionally we have the under-appreciated Anna Kendrick (Up in the Air, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World), who is simply enjoyable in everything she does, as well as Bryce Dallas Howard (Hearafter) in some strange Twilight reunion. Not to mention the incomparable Anjelica Huston (The Royal Tenenbaums) rounding out the supporting cast.
I get a strange feeling that this could be a strange mixture of 500 Days of Summer and Up in the Air.

Coming to you directly from the “this sounds interesting but could really end up sucking” department (yes, we have on of those here at The Flickcast) is this bit of news from Variety about a new series for HBO called Hung. The show, which stars Thomas Jane (The Punisher), concerns a man with a rather large member (read penis) who decides he wants to make some money with it. Yes, you read that correctly.
How does he want to make money with it? Well, you’ll just have to wait for the show to debut to find out. Fortunately, that won’t be too long from now as it starts on June 28th and will run at 10:00 pm — right after the second season of True Blood, which returns on June 12th.
Also according to Variety, the first episode will run for 45 minutes, with all others being 30 minutes in length. Co-Starring with Jane in the series are Jane Adams and Anne Heche. Also of note is that the pilot for Hung was directed by Alexander Payne, who directed, and won the Oscar for writing, Sideways. He was also nominated for directing Sideways and for writing Election.
Jane and Payne together again for the very first time. Could be interesting. I guess we’ll find out on June 28th.
