by Joe Gillis, Dec 2 2009 // 7:00 AM

With Black Friday sales behind us but with Christmas right around the corner, there’s still time to get some great movies on DVD and Blu-ray this holiday season. To help, here’s a list of some of the new movie and TV shows coming to DVD and Blu-ray this week that we’re looking forward to seeing. Also, there’s some classic, and not-so-classic, movies hitting Blu-ray for the first time.

Of all the new releases, we’re particularly interested in the Blu-ray versions of movies and TV shows such as The Wizard of Oz, Gremlins, Snatch, Ben 10: Alien Swarm and the Blu-ray debut of McG’s Terminator: Salvation (shown above with Christian Bale and Sam Worthington).

Check them out:

A Christmas Tale (The Criterion Collection) (Blu-ray)

Ben 10 Alien Swarm ~ Ryan Kelley, Nathan Keyes, Alyssa Diaz, and Galadriel Stineman (DVD and Blu-ray)

Better Off Ted: Season One ~ Jay Harrington, Portia de Rossi (DVD and Blu-ray)

Gremlins ~ Zach Galligan, Phoebe Cates (Blu-ray)

Inside Gaming Awards Nominees Announced

by Sebastian Suchecki, Dec 1 2009 // 3:00 PM

batman-arkham-asylum-game-coverIf you love video games and think they deserve more recognition, how about an awards show to help them get more time in the spotlight? If you think that’s a good idea, you’re in luck so read on from this official press release.

Between now and December 7th, community voting is open for the Gamers’ Choice awards. It’s a very unique and cool (if not first of its kind) voting mechanic: there is one video for each nominee, and each video view counts as a vote. Each video contains clickable links to easily navigate around all the categories and nominees. There’s even a community contest, with five $1,000 shopping sprees up for grabs.

The awards show itself will be held at the Redbull House in Santa Monica, CA on 12/11/09, one day before the VGA’s. Then on 12/15/09, a special episode of Inside Gaming will feature all of the winners and related industry news.

The “Inside Gaming Awards” will form two special editions of the “Inside Gaming” series. The first special was broadcast Friday, November 27th, 2009 with “Inside Gaming’s” host “The Dead Pixel” launching over 90 nomination videos across 18 categories. Nominees will be eligible for two separate awards – the official industry “Inside Gaming Award” and a “Gamer’s Choice Award”, which will be chosen by community votes between the dates of Nov. 27th and December 7th.

Community votes will be counted based on the number of views each nomination video receives during the two week voting period. Check out the full list of Inside Gaming Awards Nominees for 2009 after the jump.

Twilight’s ‘Breaking Dawn’ To Be Split Into Two Films

by Matt Raub, Dec 1 2009 // 1:00 PM

1101306253With New Moon making over $230 million in the US and nearly $500 million worldwide, it was only a matter of time before the studio decided to try and milk the franchise for even more, and you really can’t blame them. There are two more books left in Stephenie Meyer’s series, Eclipse and Breaking Dawn.

The film adaptation for Eclipse was shot alongside New Moon, Donner and Jackson style, and will hit theaters next year. Now it looks like Summit Entertainment will be splitting Breaking Dawn into two separate films. Some may or may not know what goes down in Meyer’s final book, but things get pretty intense.

In nearly 800 pages, the entire story gets tossed on it’s head, with characters falling in love with offspring, and a few more characters dying off. It makes sense to split a book that large into two films, in order to stay true to the source.

This strategy isn’t completely unheard of in Hollywood. The most recent example would be J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter films. The final book was 759 pages long (4 more than Breaking Dawn) and will be split into two films, one to be released in November of 2010, and the second in July of 2011.

Breaking Dawn won’t get a release until well into 2011, but before then Eclipse will be in theaters on June 30, 2010.

Motorola DROID Sales Expected to Reach 1 Million Mark

by Chris Ullrich, Dec 1 2009 // 12:00 PM

Moto-Droid-3As most people are surely aware, Apple’s iPhone is a dominant force in the explosive smartphone market. People are attracted to its ease of use and iTunes integration have purchased the device in droves, in some ways because their wasn’t really a viable alternative. That is, until now.

That alternative is the DROID from Motorola and Verizon. Powered by Google’s Android OS and featuring many of the same features as the iPhone, the DROID is poised to become the newest “must have” device for this holiday season. That said, it should come as no surprise that the DROID has been seeing some really successful sales numbers since its release in early November.

In fact, it is getting very close to its target of one million units sold by the end of the fourth quarter. Actual sales figures are reported to be somewhere in the neighborhood of 700,000 to 800,000 devices sold, which is nearing Verizon and Motorola’s goal and already well over analyst predictions.

If Verizon sees a big holiday sales bump, that number can easily top one million. As someone who is currently evaluating a DROID, I can say it definitely is a great device. But is it better than the iPhone? Time will tell.

Exclusive: Get an Inside Look At Tim Burton’s MoMa Exhibit

by Matt Raub, Dec 1 2009 // 11:00 AM

EntranceWhile most film directors are considered “artists”, there are only a few that fit that role to it’s essential definition. Tim Burton is a filmmaker, writer, painter, and photographer. These skills alone could warrant him a feature at most museums, before you even take into account the vast worlds that Burton has created with every one of his films. We were lucky enough to get an exclusive peak at the brand new Tim Burton Exhibit in New York’s Museum of Modern Art sponsored by the SyFy channel, and we were blown away.

Starting with the opening hallway, the very first room lets you into Burton’s twisted Carnival setting, in which black light, several neon paintings, and a single rotating object sits in the center of the room. This alone is enough to make most cheap haunted houses worth it, and the real exhibit hasn’t even started.

The floor then leads to an open room, with Burton’s chronological work in film, sketches, and napkin notes in display along the walls. The artist came in personally to work with the museum on placement of each piece, from wall portrait to some of his sculptures. One that stands out in particular is his Robot Boy sculpture, which is interactive.

Brand New ‘Blur’ Racing Game Trailer

by Joe Gillis, Dec 1 2009 // 10:00 AM

blur-racing-screen-5

Activision and Bizarre Creations’ Blur racing game has inspired some great trailers so far, and this latest one is no exception. This time around, we get a lot more “fastrack” gameplay but also, as in the past, a pretty funny story to go along with it.

To refresh your memory about the game, Blur is the “ultimate powered-up racing experience, dropping players into heart-pumping, electrified action with multiple cars trading paint as they charge towards the finish line.” In the game, drivers “careen through real-world track locations packed with fast curves, sneaky alternate routes and hair-raising jumps in over 50 licensed cars as they collect intense Power-ups, including the ability to blast other cars out of the way with huge bursts of energy, boost their speed, and more.”

Yes, I realize that’s a lot of quotes but sometimes, believe it or not, press releases really do contain valuable information. This just happens to be one of those times, but don’t get used to it.

Click through to check out the new trailer. Blur hits store shelves soon.

First Full Trailer for Rob Marshall’s ‘NINE’

by Chris Ullrich, Dec 1 2009 // 9:00 AM

day-lewis-nineWe’ve been covering this movie quite a bit here at The Flickcast, mostly because it looks really good. Previously, we brought you some nice pictures from the film, an outstanding preview video and an exclusive clip.

Now, here’s your first look at the full trailer for Rob Marshall’s upcoming musical extravaganza NINE, which first appeared over at Apple’s trailer site. In this trailer, we’re given much more of the story from the film, which concerns disillusioned director Guido Contini (Daniel Day-Lewis) as he reaches a creative and personal crisis of epic proportion, while balancing the numerous women in his life.

We also get a peek at some of the acting performances, which even though this is obviously a musical, will still feature prominently in the film — especially when you’ve assembled the acting talent of stars such as Day-Lewis, Nicole Kidman, Penelope Cruz and Judi Dench.

Check out the new trailer after the jump. NINE opens in NY and LA on December 18 and everywhere else on Christmas Day.

Spanish ‘LOST’ Season 6 Promo Shows Hand of God?

by Matt Raub, Dec 1 2009 // 7:00 AM

lost-lockeThose from the Abrams/Lindelof camp have made public announcements that they won’t air any new footage from the upcoming sixth season of LOST, set to air in February on ABC. That hasn’t stopped some of ABC’s international affiliates from promoting the show, such as the Spanish TV network CUATRO.

The promo has mostly old footage, spruced up to look like everything is taking place on a chess board. There are some pretty cool things done with clips from the season 5 finale, but there is one new piece of footage that has everyone’s heads turning. Towards the end of the clip, a mysterious hand places the Pharaoh statue on the board.

With the recent parallels to faith and god, could this reference the hand of god placing the Pharaoh statue on the island? What could this mean for the rest of the survivors? And what’s going on with Locke?

Check out the promo, Radiohead track and all, after the jump. Expect one of the burning questions to be answered when the show makes it’s return on February 2nd, only on ABC.
