Move Over ‘Centipede’, Atari Bringing ‘Missile Command’ To Theaters

by Matt Raub, Jan 13 2011 // 9:00 AM

Just when you thought Battleship was a dumb idea to bring to the big screen, think again.

Atari–yes, the company that created the gaming console that’s been outdated for nearly 3 decades–has decided that their third biggest selling title, Missile Command, is worthy of a big-budget reboot, as they’re bringing the idea to 20th Century Fox. Here’s the breakdown from Variety.

Game is the third top title that Atari has set up as a film property, after Universal Pictures acquired “Asteroids” and Sony Pictures Animation picked up “Rollercoaster Tycoon.” It also becomes the latest brand from the ’80s to get the bigscreen treatment, with U readying a number of toy-based properties from Hasbro, including “Battleship,” and Mattel having set up others, including “He-Man and the Masters of the Universe” at Sony and “View-Master” at DreamWorks.

With “Missile Command,” the scribes have little to adapt beyond a title to build a plot around and a Cold War-heavy scenario of players having to defend their cities from being destroyed by a rain of missiles. Game celebrated its 30th anniversary last year.

First Trailer For WWE’s ‘The Chaperone’ Hits The Web

by Sebastian Suchecki, Jan 13 2011 // 7:30 AM

You know you can tell a film is going to be quality when you see certain elements in a trailer. one of those elements, is, obviously, the titular line in the film. Thankfully, that’s exactly what we get in the very first trailer for WWE’s newest family heist comedy, The Chaperone, starring top wrestler Triple H.

This is Triple H’s (real name Paul Levesque) first film role since 2004′s Blade Trinity in which he played a muscled vampire henchman with a cute little dog. This role is slightly different than that.

In the film, Ray Bradstone (Triple H) is the best “wheel man in the business,” but he is determined to go straight and be the best parent he can be to his daughter, Sally (Winter), and make amends with his ex-wife, Lynne (Gish). As Ray struggles to find honest work, his old bank-robbing crew, led by Phillip Larue (Corrigan), offers him one last job.

He agrees at first, but changes his mind at the last second leaving the crew without a driver. Ray decides instead to serve as a “chaperone” for Sally’s school field trip. When the robbery goes awry, Larue blames Ray and chases the school bus all the way to the Museum of Natural History in New Orleans. Ray must deal with Larue, while supervising Sally’s class on what becomes one of the craziest school trips ever.

The film is set to go straight to DVD and Blu-Ray be distributed by Samuel Goldwyn Films and will hit theaters on Friday, February 18. In the meantime, you can check out the first trailer for the flick after the jump.

CBS Renews ‘Big Bang Theory’ for Three More Seasons

by Chris Ullrich, Jan 12 2011 // 3:00 PM

In the world of TV being on a show that goes longer than one season is often a surprise and a wonderful way to make a living if you can get it. So we can imagine what Johnny Galecki, co-star of The Big Bang Theory, must be feeling having been on the hit series Rosanne for many years and now getting word that his current hit show will be renewed for three more seasons.

CBS made the announcement today and this renewal means the show will be on the network through the 2013-14 season. This doesn’t come as that much of a surprise considering how well the show does in the ratings. In addition, the network has a lot riding on the show considering it recently made a $2 Million per episode syndication deal. So, they really need it to last and obviously are willing to make the commitment to help it do just that.

Obviously, we’re thrilled here at the site because we really enjoy the show and the antics of the cast. Looking forward to watching this one for at least three more years.

Click through for the full press release from CBS. If you haven’t had a chance to check out Big Bang, you should. I airs on CBS Thursday nights at 8/7C.

‘DC Universe Online’ To Tie In With ‘Green Lantern’ Film, Future DC Projects

by Matt Raub, Jan 12 2011 // 12:00 PM

As many were aware, yesterday was potentially a historic day for both comic book fans and video gamers alike, as DC Universe Online, the largest MMO role playing game for both the PS3 console and the PC with actual licensed characters, hit shelves everywhere in the US. The game is said to be a landmark in the way comic fans and gamers cross over, and could even be huge for more cross-platform marketing.

DC Entertainment has quite a big year ahead of it in the box office as well, with their first big-budget, costumed live action flick since Dark Knight hits theaters with Ryan Reynolds’ Green Lantern. You can expect to see plenty of marketing between now and the film’s June release, even in-game marketing with DCUO. From Heat Vision:

Jim Lee, co-publisher of DC Entertainment and executive creative director for DCUO, said that while the game will remain focused on 75 years of comic book lore, future expansions of the game will tie into film events like Warners’ The Green Lantern.

‘The Daily Show’ Celebrates iPhone Coming to Verizon

by Chris Ullrich, Jan 12 2011 // 10:30 AM

With all the hype over the recent announcement that the iPhone is coming to Verizon, it’s nice to see at least one show offering a sober and reasoned commentary on the event. That show is, of course, The Daily Show with John Stewart. In a seven-minute spot that gets funnier by the minute, Stewart begins with iPhone users’ (including himself) troubles with AT&T.

”For the past three or four years, those of us in the iPhone community have sacrificed one thing for the ability to carry around every photograph we’ve ever taken, or song we’ve ever listened to, or home video, or compass,” Stewart said during the segment. “We have sacrificed the ability to make phone calls.”

It was supposedly so bad for Stewart that he had to send text messages by typing them out on his iPhone 4 and then having an assistant bring the phone to the message’s recipient so they could read it. John Oliver then joins in, reporting live via video chat from yesterday’s Verizon event using his AT&T iPhone. As you might expect, the quality is bad and the video call drops several times.

There’s a lot more in the video that you will enjoy, even if you’re not really caught up in the whole Verizon iPhone thing as many of us are. Funny is still funny.

Check out the video after the jump.

New Trailer For ‘Battle: Los Angeles’ Blows More Stuff Up

by Sebastian Suchecki, Jan 12 2011 // 9:00 AM

Though 2010 was full of action in the box office, there was one thing missing: aliens. That’s where Battle: Los Angeles looks to be picking up the slack. Consider this film another alien invasion D-Day type scenario with the significant difference here being that the story is told from the side of the military.

With a cast consisting of Michelle Rodriguez, Aaron Eckhart, Bridget Moynahan, and True Blood’s Jim Parrack, the film looks to be this year’s Independence Day. Here’s the full synopsis:

For years, there have been documented cases of UFO sightings around the world – Buenos Aires, Seoul, France, Germany, China. But in 2011, what were once just sightings will become a terrifying reality when Earth is attacked by unknown forces.

As people everywhere watch the world’s great cities fall, Los Angeles becomes the last stand for mankind in a battle no one expected. It’s up to a Marine staff sergeant (Aaron Eckhart) and his new platoon to draw a line in the sand as they take on an enemy unlike any they’ve ever encountered before.

We’ve got a brand new trailer for you, this time showing off more of the Marine Vs. Alien point of view, and much more Eckhart and Parrack. Check out the trailer after the jump, and catch Battle: Los Angeles in theaters on March 11th.

Conan O’Brien Gets Animated As A DC Super Hero

by Matt Raub, Jan 12 2011 // 7:30 AM

A few months ago, Conan O’Brien did a segment where he sat down with DC Animation honcho Bruce Timm and worked out the ideal look for Conan if he were a superhero in the DC Universe. That product was named The Flaming C.

On Monday, the folks at Warner Premiere (The studio behind DC’s animated series/films) went a step further and drew The Flaming C into an episode of Cartoon Network’s upcoming series Young Justice.

The scene is basically the same, with Flaming C just drawn over Superman. It even keeps the same voice from the original. Nevertheless, it’s still pretty cool to see Conan’s creation animated, fishnets and all.

Check out the clip after the jump, and catch the return of Young Justice on January 21st.

Catch Up With ‘Big Love’ Before the Final Season

by Chris Ullrich, Jan 11 2011 // 3:30 PM

To be honest, I never really got into HBO’s drama Big Love. Sure, it features some good actors in Bill Paxton, Jeanne Tripplehorn and Chloë Sevigny and that Ginnifer Goodwin is pretty easy on the eyes (and can also act), but the story of a Mormon family’s trials and tribulations just never resonated with me.

Of course, that hasn’t stopped the show from becoming a big hit for HBO and going several seasons on the network. A milestone and a testament to its obvious quality and supportive fan base. That also won’t stop us from promoting the show as it’s about to begin its fifth and final season.

So, to get that going, we’ve got a bunch of video to share with you today that will give you pretty much everything you need to know to get ready for season five and the revelations to come. Even if you’ve never seen the show and want to start watching it now, these videos — especially the “catch up” one — will help.

Check out all the videos after the jump. Big Love returns to HBO for its final season on Sunday January 16th at 9/8C.

Bond Is Back as ‘Bond 23′ Gets Ready to Go Into Production

by Chris Ullrich, Jan 11 2011 // 2:00 PM

Great news for Jams Bond fans everywhere. Deadline is reporting that a deal has been made and beleaguered studio MGM has announced a new Bond film, dubbed Bond 23, is set to go into production later this year with an eye to a November 9th, 2012 release.

In more good news, Daniel Craig will be returning as the legendary British secret agent, with Sam Mendes directing a screenplay written by Neal Purvis, Robert Wade and John Logan. That script is being kept under wraps, of course, but we do know the story begins after the events of Quantum Of Solace.

In addition, there’s no word on who might play the next Bond villain or, in more important news, who will be the next “Bond Girl.” While those are being hashed out I would also like to recommend to Sam Mendes that he give Felix Leiter a bit more to do this time around as I would like to see Jeffrey Wright keep getting work. Also, I would not mind if Olga Kurylenko came back for this one either. She’s always welcome.

Of course, given Daniel Craig’s “friendship” with Rachel Weisz, there’s always a chance she might make an appearance. That would be ok with me as well. We probably won’t see Kate Winslet in this one though, for obvious reasons.

As for other villains or Bond Girls, who would you like to see make an appearance in Bond 23?

Get a Sneak Peek At Syfy’s ‘Being Human’

by Matt Raub, Jan 11 2011 // 10:30 AM

Last year, the UK got a taste of what it would be like if a werewolf, a vampire, and a ghost all lived together in an apartment. Some of the smart folks at Syfy got wind of this and have decided to adapt the original series for us here in the states, bringing some Being Human for the very first time.

For those who don’t know, the series follows the lives of Aidan, a 200 year old vampire, Sally, a ghost who’s trapped in the house she was killed in, and Josh, a young man who was turned into a werewolf nearly 2 years ago. The three befriend each other and live together in a house hoping to move past their supernatural afflictions and cling to what little humanity they have left.

Aside from the new cast, one major element changed from the BBC series is the addition of the character Bishop, played by Mark Pellegrino, who most know as the mysterious Jacob from ABC’s Lost. Bishop’s role is explained, as well as the rest of the series, in the sneak peek after the jump.

Catch Syfy’s Being Human on Monday, January 17th at 9/8c.
