Machinima Mondays: ‘The Internet is for Porn’

by John Carle, Mar 8 2010 // 12:00 PM

Back in 2003, a risque Sesame Street inspired musical by the name of Avenue Q featuring puppet leads came out with a shocking statement: “The internet is for porn.” How could this be that a network that enabled global communication and business opportunities could come down to such a lowbrow concept as porn? But as the audience began listening to the lyrics, it was hard to argue that the internet really my revolve around men cozying up to watch various acts of depravity they weren’t experiencing at home.

The truth is, everyone knows that the internet is for porn. The only ones who don’t are just living in denial like Kate Monster does in Avenue Q. And, interestingly enough some of the most frequent patrons of this less than social activity may end up coming from the world’s most social game: World of Warcraft. It was only a matter of time before a mash up of the two came to be.

Using their beloved MMO, a group of players came together and put together an animated version of the song using their on screen avatars. Still in the early days of machinima creation in 2006, “The Internet is for Porn” does a fantastic job of taking the canned animations of World of Warcraft and lip synching the song to the on screen characters. The result turned in to another internet hit as the Machinima closes in on almost six and a half million views up to this point.

Sit back, relax and let yourself open up to some high culture by viewing the following clip. Yes, culture. If it has been on Broadway, it’s considered culture. That’s our story and we are sticking to it.

Fan Film Friday: LOST’s ‘Hurley In The U.S.A’

by Sebastian Suchecki, Mar 5 2010 // 4:00 PM

Since we started posting videos under our Fan Film Friday banner, some of them have been selected because they were well done and some have been because they were funny. But no matter what, they have always been entertaining. That’s just what today’s video is.

Fans of Lost have been known to take to the Internets with a plethora of fan films and bizarre edits as a show of honor to their favorite confusing sci-fi series. With that said, not many people would probably consider Lost and Miley Cyrus in the same sentence. That is, until now.

YouTube user xSoppySofax has made quite a few Lost-themed fan films, but “Hurley in the U.S.A.” may be the funniest. After the jump, check out how the user took footage of everybody’s favorite lottery winner-turned-castaway and edited it to become Miley Cyrus’ “Party in the U.S.A.” music video. Funny? Yes. Disturbing? Maybe.

Machinima Mondays: ‘Phil’

by John Carle, Feb 22 2010 // 3:00 PM

Starting this week, The Flickcast will be taking our love of Machinima and turning it in to a weekly feature. For those who don’t know, Machinima is real time 3D rendering of graphics to generate computer animation. What that means is people take different video games and their associated mods and create different short films or series based off of them.

This week, we will be taking a look at Phil from Black Light Productions. Named after its main character and created using Halo 3, Phil revolves around a Halo newbie as he learns his way around the XBox Live world with the accompaniment of the standoffish Zack and overly nice and naive Wally. Unlike some Machinima which has the players reacting as if the events of the game are “real life”, Phil, Zack and Wally acknowledge that they are playing Halo 3 and communicating over Live.

Following them through the series’ thirteen episodes, we get to see some of the biggest faults in online gaming portrayed in a very humorous way. Everything gets covered through the series from trash talkers, glitchers, griefers, competition and clans… and even a little bit of romance.

Fan Film Friday: L.A.R.P – Live Avatar Role Playing

by Matt Raub, Feb 19 2010 // 3:00 PM

We’ve been known to be kind of hard on James Cameron’s Avatar, given how much money and praise it’s gotten over the past two months. Given that, there are some die-hards still out there that believe that “Pandora” is the greatest place in existence, and wish it was real. Leave it to the internet to find a way to make that humorous.

Many people have become aware of the lives of LARPers over the past few years. Some even got to see a few films, including Role Models and the little-known Darkon. It’s basically acting out a scenario that most people play using dice and boards, such as Masquerade or Dungeons and Dragons. This time, the focus is set on Pandora and the Na’vi.

After the jump, check out what a group of Hometree Wisconsin pulled together using toilet paper, wigs, and tons of blue face paint. This is all your fault, James Cameron.

Exclusive: Interview With Mike Doto, Writer and Director of ‘The Legacy’

by Matt Raub, Feb 18 2010 // 3:00 PM

Every once in a while, we’ll get an opportunity to check out a new indie film from out of nowhere and get blown away by it. Sadly, this happens less often than we would like, but in this case, it was completely true.

We recently got to check out the short film The Legacy, written and directed by Mike Doto, about a boy who discovers that his father is the world’s greatest superhero. The film is, by all definitions of the word, fantastic. It captures some of the elements that made the original Superman films so great, without treading into campy territory.

With that in mind, we got a chance to sit down with the writer/director of the film, Mike Doto, about what it took to make the project, and where he goes from here.

The Flickcast: With a concept like The Legacy, what drove you to this idea? Were you a big comic fan growing up? If so, which books were you inspired by the most?

Mike Doto: For The Legacy I really wanted to get back to the roots of why I wanted to be a filmmaker to begin with. I feel like I grew up in a time when movies really connected with kids and I’ve never forgotten the impact that those films have had on me.

Most of these films starred a young protagonist that I could relate to quite easily, films such as E.T., Goonies, Wargames, D.A.R.Y.L., The Last Starfighter, and Back to the Future. What I’ve learned is that these weren’t just kid movies, these were movies for all ages, they appealed to the both the young and the young at heart.  So I thought about what movie I would have written when I was 10-years-old and I decided that I probably would have written a movie about being a superhero.

Superman was my boyhood hero so naturally that’s the hero I wanted to emulate.  In thinking further about the Superman story I decided that it would be more effective to write a film about the relationship between the father and the son since this is at the heart of the Superman character. I actually wasn’t a big comic book fan growing up. I was a huge fan of the Superman movies, but I didn’t really spend much time reading comics.

I would much rather dress up as a superhero or play with my action figures and imagine what that world would be like to live in. Even though a camera wasn’t rolling, I think this was the start of my filmmaking career although I didn’t realize it at the time.

Countdown To LOST: Oceanic Flight 815’s Crash In Real Time

by Matt Raub, Jan 29 2010 // 12:00 PM

Picture 1We’re all pretty excited around The Flickcast offices for February. Not just because it means warmer weather for those of us on the East Coast, but mostly because that means LOST is back on the air with its final season. We’ve been bringing you plenty of LOST tidbits from all over the web lately, and now it’s time for something even more fun.

We’ve gone into how quirky LOST fans can be before, and how much time and/or effort they put into their fanaticism (which we love, of course), but our collective hats are tipped for this little piece of fandom. This friendly YouTuber put together all of the clips from the show leading up to the crash of Oceanic Flight 815, and threw it together chronologically, with a bit of 24 flavoring.

Many props go out to YouTube’s pyram1dhead for his work on this one. He had also done the same thing for when the survivors all met for the first time at the Sydney airport. Lots of time and effort go into things like these, and we are more than happy to share it with you.

Check out out after the jump, and be sure to keep it here as we count down to next week’s LOST premiere with plenty of quirky things to keep your mouth watering.

NBC’s Late Night Fiasco Explained With Computer Animation

by Matt Raub, Jan 20 2010 // 9:00 AM

Picture 2We all know that this NBC Late Night war is getting out of hand. It’s good to see some are taking it seriously, while still adding a comedic twist to it, though. SNL’s Seth Meyers broke down the fiasco into marital terms that we could all understand, and now it’s time for Taiwan to take a crack at it, using the skills they’re best at: state-of-the-art computer animation.

Finally, the whole war has now been put into terms that us geeks can understand. Of course, we have no idea what’s actually being said in the video, but what we do know is that Jeff Zucker, Jay Leno, and Conan O’Brien turn into Captain America, Superman, and the Hulk about halfway through…and battle. What else could you ask for?

Is this just the Taiwanese News mocking our coverage of the Late Night War, or do they really think that the only way we solve our problems is by putting on superhero costumes and fighting? Check out the insane news report after the jump, and if anybody knows what is being said, please fill us in.

Zachary Quinto Narrates Hilarious ‘Star Trek’ Slashfic

by Matt Raub, Dec 23 2009 // 8:00 AM

Picture 3Now, before Zachary Quinto supporters get all bent out of shape, allow me to first explain. The following is a fan-edit of the audiobook for Alan Dean Foster’s novelization of this year’s Star Trek. The audiobook was narrated by the film’s co-star Zachary Quinto, who played Spock.

From there, an overzealous fan decided that the narration would make a much better romance novel than a story about intergalactic heroism. With that, “Spork! An Erotic Love Story” was born. Dean Foster is quite descriptive in his narrative, and sadly this is only used against him in this slashfic (fan fiction which ends in romance).

Check out the video after the jump, but be warned, if you’re sure dialogue and descriptions from a novelization of Star Trek can’t be considered NSFW, you might be proven wrong. Also, be aware, it can get pretty intense towards the end, but overall it’s quite hilarious. Enjoy.

70 Minute Fan Review of ‘The Phantom Menace’

by John Muth, Dec 22 2009 // 9:00 AM

Jar-Jar-Binks-Poster-Card-C10227315By now, the likelihood that you’ve seen, or at least heard about the mega-review/breakdown of Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace is pretty certain. However, for those lucky few that have yet to enjoy it, here is the first video (of seven) that presents a meandering, yet quite funny, synopsis on everything wrong with the first of the three Star Wars prequels.

The filmmaker, who on his YouTube profile page, lists himself as Mike from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, uses his production company’s name, Red Letter Media, to provide a number of sci-fi movie reviews, fan-edits and original content (check out the ‘Dudebros.’ episodes for a laugh).

The review of Episode I has made it’s way into just about every corner of the internet; and I’m sure before it received the backlash that all these meme’s get, enjoy it for the fun that it is. Also, it should be noted that the videos are probably best considered NSFW, and if you care, “spoiler-ific”.

Check out one of seven after the jump, with a list of links if you so choose to continue on.

Fan Film Friday: ‘Freeman’s Mind’

by John Carle, Dec 11 2009 // 7:00 AM

Gordon Freeman - Half-Life 2 WalkingHe has been the face behind 20,000,000 units in video games sales. He was a simple scientist who fought his way through the disaster at Black Mesa and went on to become the face of the resistance against the Combine empire.

He was recently voted by the readers of Gamespot.com the Greatest Video Game Hero of All Time (even beating out Mario in the finals). He is Gordon Freeman of Half-Life and he has been able to do all of this without ever opening his mouth.

One of the key characteristics of Gordon Freeman, aside from being the “Free Man” as the aliens in Half-Life like to refer to him, is that he is also the “Every Man”. He was not a war hero. He wasn’t a super-powered being. He was a person doing his job when a terrible accident occurred and set the events of his life in to motion to lead him to a path of greatness.

Without ever being given a voice, players were given the chance to fill in the blank spots in dialogue during the game with what they felt would be their own responses.
