IFC Films Picks Up James Gunn’s ‘Super’

by Joe Gillis, Sep 13 2010 // 8:00 AM

In what Deadline is describing as a “major deal’ IFC Films has picked up the rights to James Gunn’s latest film Super. The deal happened late last night during the currently running Toronto Film Festival and is reportedly of the seven figure variety.

In the film, Rainn Wilson plays Frank, a man who’s wife (Liv Tyler) leaves him for a seductive drug dealer (Kevin Bacon). Because of this, Frank decides to don the guise of a superhero called Crimson Bolt to wreak havoc on villains everywhere.

With his trusty sidekick Boltie (Ellen Page) Frank takes to the streets to stop evil doers and in the process tries to regain his self-respect and the affections of his wife. Plus, he uses his plumber’s wrench to good effect and crushes a few bad guys skulls in the process.

No word yet on IFC’s release plans for the film but we’ll bring it to you when we know. In the meantime, for more info on this deal check out the full press release from IFC after the jump.

War Movie Mondays: ‘Merrill’s Marauders’

by Douglas Barnett, Aug 30 2010 // 12:00 PM

This week’s pick is another cinematic masterpiece from acclaimed director and combat veteran Samuel Fuller (Fixed Bayonets, The Steel Helmet). Merrill’s Marauders (1962) tells the story of Brig. General Frank Merrill and his American jungle fighters in Burma during World War II.  What makes this film so unique from the bravado of similar war pictures that came out of Hollywood in the pre Vietnam early nineteen sixties was that it was based on actual events. The film stars Jeff Chandler (Brig. Gen. Frank Merrill), Ty Hardin (Lt. “Stock” Stockton), Claude Atkins (Sgt. Kolowicz), John Hoyt (General Joseph Stillwell), and Peter Brown (“Bullseye” a platoon sniper).

As World War II spread throughout the Pacific theater, there were intense campaigns in Asia from northern China, to the borders of British held India which the Japanese coveted for its natural resources, as well as adding it into their vastly expanding Asian empire. British Viceroy to India Lord Louis Mountbatten (uncle to Prince Charles), had devised many covert Anglo-American military units to harass and to thwart any attempt for an invasion of India by Japanese forces.

‘Official’ Trailer and Poster for ‘The Killer Inside Me’ Now Online

by Chris Ullrich, May 25 2010 // 9:00 AM

Previously, we brought you an extended trailer for director Michael Winterbottom’s upcoming film The Killer Inside Me. Sadly, as we found out later, it wasn’t the “official’ release and was subsiquently removed from the Internets. That was unfortunate because the trailer, and the movie, looked quite interesting.

Fortunately, the studio has now seen fit to release the trailer “officially” into the wild and, of course, we’ve got it for you right here. This trailer isn’t all that different from the previous one and still features the film’s stars Casey Affleck, Kate Hudson and Jessica Alba doing what they do best. It also has a great look and intriguing premise. However, it doesn’t go quite a far as the last one did and is obviously more for general consumption. I’m sure we’ll see a “Red Band” version of this soon enough.

In case you’ve forgotten what the film is about, its based on the novel by Jim Thompson, who also wrote the novels The Grifters and The Getaway, and features Affleck as Sheriff Lou Ford who, on the surface, is an upstanding citizen and upholds the law. But underneath, Ford hides a dark secret that leads him to places he may not want to go but feels compelled to explore.

The Killer Inside Me also features Bill Pulman, Simon Baker, Ned Beatty and Elias Koteas. It hits theaters and On Demand June 18th. Check out the trailer and a larger version of the poster after the jump.
