Creator Matthew Weiner on Don Draper’s Fate and the End of ‘Mad Men’

by Chris Ullrich, Nov 16 2011 // 12:00 PM

In most areas of real life, endings can often be difficult. This can also be be true if you’ve created and produced a very successful television series that’s wrapping things up. In many of those cases, like withThe Sopranos and LOST, fans were very unhappy with the way those series ended.

Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner doesn’t want his show to end like those and doesn’t want fans to end up disappointed. In fact, he’s already thinking about and planning the ending to his show.

”It came to me in the middle of last season,” said Weiner. “I always felt like it would be the experience of human life. And human life has a destination. It doesn’t mean Don’s gonna die. What I’m looking for, and how I hope to end the show, is like … It’s 2011. Don Draper would be 84 right now. I want to leave the show in a place where you have an idea of what it meant and how it’s related to you. It’s a very tall order, but I always talk about Abbey Road.

What’s the song at the end of Abbey Road? It’s called ‘The End.’ There is a culmination of an experience of people working at their highest level. And all I want to do is not wear out the welcome. I was 35 when I wrote the Mad Men pilot, 42 when I got to make it, and I’ll be 50 when it goes off the air. So that’s what you’re gonna get. Do I know everything that’s gonna happen? No, I don’t. But I just want it to be entertaining, and I want people to remember it fondly and not think it ended in a fart.”

AMC Says 5th Season of ‘Mad Men’ Is Coming

by Chris Ullrich, Jan 7 2011 // 2:30 PM

With all the contract negotiations and such going on over at AMC between the network and the stars and creative team behind their blockbuster hit show Mad Men, there had been some speculation that a 5th season of the show wasn’t a done deal and if there’s going to be a 5th season at all.

However, according to a Q&A taking place at the TCA sessions this week, and reported by Deadline, there is no deal yet with Lionsgate TV for a fifth season of the Emmy-winning period drama or between Lionsgate and series creator Matthew Weiner for him to continue on the show.

However, according to the report, the plan is to bring Mad Men back for Season 5, AMC’s Joel Stillerman told reporters. But he was quick to point out that he din’t know exactly when. AMC President and GM Charlie Collier was also asked about the state of the Mad Men renewal.

“We’re negotiating, don’t know much more than that yet,” he said. “Can’t put a timetable on if.” So, whatever that means it at least looks like AMC is planning on having the show back. Let’s hope all the pieces fall into place.

Don Draper Says ‘What?’

by Chris Ullrich, Nov 4 2010 // 3:00 PM

In what may be one of the most profound videos ever put together, YouTube user Musicvideosthatsuck has compiled a video highlighting all of the times Mad Men character and serious power player Don Draper has uttered the word “What?” Now I’m not suggesting this video will change your life but it will give you a good idea as to the power of one word and also the skills of the actor who portrays Draper on the show: potential Superman Jon Hamm.

Even if you’re not really interested in writing, acting or much of anything else, you still have to appreciate the power of one word. In all the situations he gets into and all the people he deals with Draper wields the word “What” as a weapon, a punchline, an insult or in whatever way will make him come out on top in said situation.

As a person who appreciates good writing and good performances I can certainly appreciate this kind of thing. Made even easier, of course, when someone takes the time to put a video like this together for all to see and appreciate. Okay, enough from me, let’s get to the video — after the break of course. What?

• Have you seen this Emmy Winning Star Wars Fan Film?

• In Star Trek: the Next Generation casting news we wonder WHO could have been Geordi LaForge?

• We love robots, but we can’t stop simultaneously laughing and shaking our heads when we watch this video.

• Here’s some of the coolest looking custom consoles we’ve never seen. Jealous? Hell yes.

• Apparently, girls were pissed at the director of The Human Centipede during casting when they read the script. Are we surprised? No. Have you seen the movie?

• Quentin Tarantino will get his very own Friar’s Club Roast. It’s certainly a better idea than Flava Flav or Hasselhoff. Although, that Hoff one was pretty damn funny.

• Football could have something to do with everyone in the country Tivo’ing this year’s Oscars. What?

• In case you were wondering (or worried about your own problem) here’s a list of the 12 heaviest drinkers in the history of TV. Not on the list? It’s probably because you’re not famous and nobody cares.

by Bob Starr, Jul 30 2010 // 5:00 PM

Welcome to this week’s On the Radar where we delve into all corners of the entertainment, tech and geek Internets for news, views and whatnot that may have escaped our regular coverage this week. Let is know if we missed something interesting. Otherwise, on to the links!

• The Fantastic Four reboot is still happening, and now with a completely CG Thing.

• We can’t wait for Stone’s Social Network, but these parody posters are pretty damned entertaining as well.

• Because we love lists, Adult Swim brings us a list of the Most Invasive Surgeries on the network. Mind you, this is before Children’s Hospital aired.

• Leonardo DiCaprio has passed on Mel Gibson’s viking picture. We can only imagine what that phone call sounded like.

• Want do get women like Don Draper? The Mad Men School of Seduction can help.

• The second half of Caprica‘s first season gets a trailer, and it looks pretty cool.

AMC Sets ‘Mad Men’, ‘Rubicon’ Premiere Dates

by Chris Ullrich, Apr 21 2010 // 7:00 AM

With much of our attention focused on the Frank Darabont produced The Walking Dead and our recaps of this season’s Breaking Bad, we still have time to wonder when our favorite show set in the topsy turvy world of advertising was going to make its fourth season debut on AMC. Well, the wait is over as the network has announced Mad Men‘s return date. What is it? Sunday, July 25 at 10/9C.

The new season will hopefully answer some of the burning questions left after season three ended. Will Don and Betty get back together? What’s going to happen with the new agency? Will Joan and Roger get back together? Will Peggy ever be happy? How can I get a job where you drink in the afternoon?

Many of these questions (probably not that last one) will no doubt be answered as the series basically starts agin with a de facto pilot and sets the action to take the stories in a whole new direction. I, for one, can’t wait.

Turning from the return of a great show to a brand new and potentially great show, AMC has also announced the premiere date of its new conspiracy thriller set in a New York-based government intelligence agency. The show, called Rubicon, stars James Badge Dale (The Pacific) and Miranda Richardson and will premiere on Sunday, August 1 at 8/7C.

Obviously, having never seen Rubicon, I can’t really say if I’m interested in it or not. I do like Dale’s work in The Pacific and Miranda Richardson is a very good actress so on the strength of its two leads, the show seems on the right track. Of course, that is all overshadowed by the return of Mad Men.

Fan Film Friday: ‘Mad Men’ in 60 Seconds

by Matt Raub, Sep 11 2009 // 2:30 PM

mad_menPeople today live in the fast, go get ‘em world where we sometimes can’t be bothered by hours upon hours of a series we want to catch up on. Luckily, the great folks at “the internet” bring us such great gems like Every Week on Entourage that can sum up an entire season or series of a show in a matter of minutes.

The same idea has now been applied to the critically acclaimed series Mad Men, about people working together in a 1960s Manhattan ad agency. The video shows off the diversity of the show, including the authenticity of the dated writing, the use of smoking indoors, and the mysterious past of the main protagonist.

Check out the fan film below, and check out Don Draper and his gang of Mad Men every Sunday night at 10:00 p.m. (ET/PT) on AMC. Be warned, the fan film, though only a minute long, has a few spoilers if you haven’t seen the show. Watch with caution.
