At New York Comic Con, we were able to get a booth tour from Capcom which got us some hands on time with three of their much anticipated titles. The first of which was the upcoming rerelease of Marvel vs. Capcom 3 with Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3. Back at Comic Con in San Diego, after announcing the first set of new characters being added to the game, there was a massive leak which revealed the full roster. Now, Capcom has gone official with all but a few of these characters and had them available for us to play as at the Con.

We demoed the game on a traditional controller for the XBox 360. As there was an all day tournament going on, the wait for even press to play using the fight sticks was outrageous and considering most households would use a regular controller anyway, we felt like this would give us a good idea of what to expect from the game. Focusing our teams on the newer characters, we had to learn on the fly just what kind of play styles to use with them.

Vergil was the most reminiscent of Dante from the original Marvel vs. Capcom 3 focusing on using his sword for a majority of his attacks. Firebrand from Ghosts ‘n’ Goblins ended up being surprisingly fun to play with as we didn’t really have any idea what to expect from him. Nova and Ghost Rider felt like the badasses we expected them to be but sadly Rocket Raccoon was not an option for us yet.

The most surprisingly fun character was Phoenix Wright. The best character comparison we could make was him being like Dan from Street Fighter. His attacks may look horribly wimpy as he throws paperwork at opponents but he is perfect for luring opponents into a false sense of security.

Today, Marvel.com revealed the next iteration of Marvel vs. Capcom 3 with the stereotypical Capcom naming motif with Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3. The game will feature six new characters from each of the companies as well as the much requested Spectator Mode during online matches and the correction of various balancing issues.

The Marvel roster is going to be beefed up with heavy hitter Ghost Rider and fan favorite, Hawkeye. Not Ronin, not Bullseye dressed as Hawkeye, not the Young Avenger Hawkeye chick. But Clint Barton, the real Hawkeye. (Although I probably just accidently named off all three of the alternate costumes.) Capcom will be adding Marvel vs. Capcom’s most requested legacy character Strider as well as series newcomer Firebrand, the little red demon thing from Ghost ‘n Goblins.

Additionally, some screens have leaked online featuring both the character artwork and screen shots of the remaining eight unrevealed characters. Here are what we have found across the internet.

This week Chris and Matt get down to business with all manner of new topics, observations, questions and discussions. Among the items on the agenda this time around are the new Green Hornet trailer, the Dr. Strange movie and who should play the character, a bit more talk about E3, Jason Momoa as Conan, M. Night Shyamalan’s new “secret” movie and a whole lot more.

The boys also made some picks this week including Matt’s pick of the book The Man Who Heard Voices: Or, How M. Night Shyamalan Risked His Career on a Fairy Tale and Chris’ pick of the Brian K. Vaughn comic Dr. Strange: The Oath.

To be honest, I was a fan of Dr. Strange comics growing up. But now that I’m a bit older and, perhaps, a bit wiser I have to wonder if a Dr. Strange movie is really what’s needed — especially given the mostly unfortunate treatment of comic book movies these days. Still, regardless of my feelings about the idea, it seems an adaptation of the Marvel comic is moving forward with Conan writers Thomas Donnelly and Joshua Openheimer now on board to pen the script.

Dr. Strange, which has a long development history and various writers and directors involved including Wes Craven, Dovid Goyer, Steven Norrington and Guillermo del Toro, will reportedly be one of the first projects to be developed now that Disney owns Marvel. At least with Disney now involved, Marvel should have the financial backing to do the film justice on a production value basis and hopefully carry on the high quality of films like Iron Man.

Created by Stan Lee and artist Steve Ditko in 1963, Dr. Strange was a brilliant yet shallow surgeon who lost his skills after a car accident damages his hands. Seeking ways to heal his injuries he instead discovers the ability to harness his psychic and magical powers and use them to battle evil.

It’s hard and probably unwise to judge a project with only this much info to go on. So, instead of thinking its probably not going to be good or wonder if it should be made at all, I will instead try to give it the benefit of the doubt. Let’s hope, in the end, it turns out more like Iron Man and The Dark Knight and less like Daredevil or Jonah Hex.

With the Marvel/Disney deal looming, the race is on for studios to secure properties. Variety is reporting that Columbia Pictures is working on a sequel to Ghost Rider, with David Goyer reportedly in talks to create the story, as well as supervise additional writers for the film. Nicolas Cage is expected to reprise his starring role as Johnny Blaze.

The resurrection of Ghost Rider as a franchise comes in the middle of negotiations with other Marvel characters at Sony, Fox, Universal and Paramount. Studios must move on these properties now if they want to retain the rights to their Marvel superheroes.  If the properties languish, Marvel Entertainment can reclaim the rights to those characters. This is exactly what happened with the Dr. Strange, Black Panther and Iron Man properties. Iron Man languished in development hell at New Line before Marvel turned the property into a self-financed blockbuster last year. And we all know how well that went.

Although Goyer stated through a spokesman, that he has not officially signed on to a second Ghost Rider, plans are already under way to base the sequel on a script Goyer penned years ago. Goyer’s, superhero work includes successful screen transfers of DC’s Batman Begins and Marvel’s Blade franchise.

Columbia isn’t the only one getting in on the properties action. Fox plans to reboot Fantastic Four with Green Lantern scribe Michael Green; develop a Wolverine sequel and other X-Men spinoffs; a Silver Surfer film; and a revamped version of Daredevil.

Sony recently tapped James Vanderbilt to pen the fifth and sixth installments of the Spider-Man series, and Universal is continuing work on Sub-Mariner. Paramount will continue to be the distributor for Iron Man 2 and are also expected to distribute the upcoming Thor and Captain America flicks.
