This week in New York City, the annual Toy Fair convention hits the Jacob Javits Center and thousands of new and popular toys and toy properties are shown off. There were, of course, some less-than-interesting booths, but we know what you want to see, so we went straight to the newest lines of toys and statues based on some of the upcoming movie and TV properties.
Obviously, Toy Story 3 had a huge presence at the show, given the fact that it’s the best hybrid of toys and film out there today. Tim Burton’s Alice In Wonderland had some great new figures of the whacked out Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter. LEGO stepped up their game with some brand new LEGO Star Wars playsets, including a great “Luke on Hoth” scene.
Diamond was also in attendence with some great new Ghostbusters products, including a new Ghostbusters replica sign for those hardcore fans. Finally, there were some great new 12-inch figures for the upcoming Jonah Hex film, including our first look at John Malkovich from the film.
Check out our Movie Toys picture gallery from the show after the jump, and be sure to check back in tomorrow to see what else we’ve got to show you from this year’s Toy Fair.
It’s no secret that we all get giddy for LEGOS around the Flickcast office. Whether it’s playing Lego Batman in our spare time, reviewing Lego Rock Bandfor the site or watching “8-Bit Trip” for Fan Film Fridays, Legos hold a special place in our hearts. It’s also no secret that we love ourselves some video games here and it is impossible to say you love video games if you don’t love Halo.
Now, six years in the making comes a trailer combining two things we love the most. No, Traveller’s Tales and Bungie are not pairing up to release Lego Halo for the XBox 360 but we are getting the next best thing. Using the magic of stop motion animation, a lot of free time and a passion for the two properties, Alex Kobbs has created a twenty-five minute long homage to his two most beloved properties with “Battle of the Brick: Built for Combat”.
The music game formula is nothing new. Start out with a plastic instrument and pick a song. Successful completion of a song unlocks more popular but increasingly difficult tunes. For your sequel, include the ability to play as various famous recording artists, both living and dead. Lather, rinse, repeat. Occasionally pick a specific band and focus a game around them (i.e. Beatles RockBand) or them and the music they inspired (like when we found out that Van Halen somehow relates to Third Eye Blind).
So what separates Lego Rock Bandfrom the rest of the pack? Personality. Anyone who has picked up Lego Star Wars or Lego Batman sees that something special that Lego-izing a popular character or moment can bring to the screen. The unique and quirky humor of seeing a stormtroopers explode in to a pile of brings or watching the Lego Riddler get locked up in jail hold a special place in our hearts because we don’t just love Star Wars and Batman, but we love Lego too. Sorry Megablocks. It’s great to see that this humor carries over to give the Rock Band series not only its first ever “story” mode, but translates in to unique visuals that fit both the Rock Band and Lego licenses well.

An internet connection will be required for this export.

“Build a band and rock the universe.” Quite an ambitious statement. The universe is a pretty big place. But luckily for Lego Rock Band players, they will be getting some help from a musical space-jamming legend as Ziggy Stardust himself, David Bowie joins the Lego RockBand roster. For the first time, including actual artists as playable characters in the Rock Band franchise, don’t expect David Bowie to have the same reaction that Courtney Love did upon seeing her deceased husband Kurt Cobain singing Bon Jovi in Guitar Hero 5.
Instead, expect to see a Lego-ized version of The Thin White Duke much in the style of Lego Star Wars, Lego Batman and Lego Indiana Jones as he takes the stage with his hit “Let’s Dance” — which can be seen after the jump. Being the first celebrity included in Lego Rock Band to be announced, fans will likely keep their eyes and ears peeled for any other famous rockers making their way in to the game before its November 10th release date on XBox 360 and Playstation 3 or November 17th on Wii.

Every week, we at the Flickcast try to bring you a new web video in the that relates to the geek culture we all know and love. This week’s video, 8-Bit Trip, came from a true labor of love, or possible insanity. To animate classic video game moments and characters, the skilled filmmakers spent 1500 hours doing the most “stop motion” capture around.
Instead of being able to move just a single piece per frame, they had to deconstruct and reconstruct models to produce this 3:49 piece of Lego insanity. To give you some frame of reference, that comes out to 62.5 days working non-stop or 37.5 standard forty hour work weeks to complete this project.
Hats off to these incredibly talented, and somewhat insane, filmmakers for their work on this project. One can only wonder just how many thousands of Legos went in to the production of it.
Rock Band has never failed to satisfy the wanna-be rock stars within us, but has yet to focus on the younger generation of budding rockers, until now. LEGO Rock Band will feature everything we know and love about the previous Rock Band games as well as the family-friendly, silly antics gamers have come to expect from the LEGO franchise. Players will be able to design their whole band as well as their roadies and manager.
Some notable tracks from the kid-friendly setlist are “Song 2″ by Blur, Carl Douglas’ “Kung Fu Fighting”, Good Charlotte’s “Boys and Girls” So What” by Pink, and “The Final Countdown” by Europe.
Coming this Holiday season for the PS3, Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii and DS, LEGO Rock Band puts the power of Rock into the hands gamers of all ages as they “Build a Band and Rock the Universe.”

With the success of G.I. Joe and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen this summer, toy-based movies are hot properties in Hollywood. Variety is reporting that Warner Bros. is the latest studio to jump on the bandwagon and is planning to develop a movie around Lego and its iconic building blocks.
Scribes Dan and Kevin Hageman are penning the script for a family comedy that will mix live action and animation. The plot is under tight wraps, but has been described as an action adventure set in a Lego world. Dan Lin (Sherlock Holmes) will produce.
In the past, execs at Lego have turned down many development ideas to protect their brand. To date, Lego has made only a series of direct-to-DVD animated movies based on its Bionicle line.
But the company sparked to Lin and the Hageman brothers’ embrace of core values Lego desired in a film, especially “a fun factor, creativity and that imagination has no boundaries,” Lin explained. The film has been in development for more than a year, with the scribes and producers making trips to Denmark to work with Lego’s execs on the concept.
