In what could be definitely be considered a bad news/good news situation there’s been some developments among shows that we like here at The Flickcast. First off, FX has decided not to give freshmen series Terriers a second season due to, it would seem, the show’s continued mediocre ratings.

But with every cloud often comes a silver lining. This time that lining comes in the form of Showtime’s announcement that it will be renewing Dexter for a sixth season given that the show remains very popular and series star Michael C. Hall continues to be healthy.

While I’m happy about Dexter, I’m pretty disappointed in FX and their decision about Terriers. The show as very well done and told an interesting story with compelling characters you actually cared about. Obviously, that’s not something FX was interested in. Of course, the low ratings didn’t help either.

When considering the show I have to wonder why it never found and audience. Was the story too much of a downer? Were people not interested in a flawed protagonist who worked at the fringes of the law? Was the name confusing or off-putting in some way? Or do people just not like Donal Logue?

This week on The Flickcast Chris and Matt dive into a whole bunch of topics for your listening pleasure. Ralph Garman from L.A. radio station KROQ 106.7 hosted the official San Diego Comic-Con 2010 Dexter  panel. Ralph got things rolling by showing an exclusive  sneak peek at the second season of its animated webisode series ‘Dexter Early Cuts: Dark Echo,’ to a packed hall.

A video showing gameplay from Dexter ‘the game’ for the iPod and iPad was on tap next, revealing some of the in-game action from the 3D game based on the  Dexter series. But what the audience really wanted to see, was a trailer from the upcoming Dexter Season 5 which begins in September.

The trailer takes us back to the game-changing events of Season 4′s shocking finale. A crying baby; the police arrive with siren’s blaring at Dexter’s suburban house; an image of Rita, Dexter’s wife, resting lifeless in a bathtub full of blood. In front of the officers on the scene, Dexter appears to admit it. He admits he did it. Killed his own wife.

Ponderous, since Dexter’s serial-killing peer, the crafty and lethal ’Trinity Killer,’ played masterfully by John Lithgow, was most certainly responsible. Still, the apparent admission stirs suspicion in those around Dexter, and many begin to question if perhaps there is more to Dexter than meets the eye.

The list of TV networks, studios and comic book companies attending San Diego Comic-Con keeps on growing. This time around it’s premiere cable network Showtime and their announcement of all they will be bringing to the show this year. The networks panels this year will include Dexter by itself as well as a special Anti-Hero panel featuring series star Michael C. Hall, Californication’s David Duchovny and Weeds’ Mary-Louise Parker.

Both panels will be on the first day of the con, Thursday, July 22.  In addition to the cast mentioned previously, the panels will feature producers and writers from Dexter, Weeds, Californication and Nurse Jackie. Okay, I like most of these shows and also are fans of their stars. However, I’m not really sure what these particular shows have to do with Comic-Con.

Granted, the con has become way more about movies, TV and such and less about comics, but I think the panels should have at least something to do with comics or the geek community in order to be included in the con. I can see what a show like The Big Bang Theory or Fringe, for example, are doing coming to San Diego but Weeds and Nurse Jackie? Not sure. At least Californiacation’s David Duchovny used to be in The X-Files so that, at least, makes a little sense.

Oh well, if you like these shows (and I do like most of them) and are going to Comic-Con, I guess you’re probably pretty happy now so I’ll just be quiet. The 67th annual Golden Globes awards took place last night, and Avatar walked away top honors of  Best Picture and Best Director, fueling speculation that it is gaining momentum going into the Oscar nomination race. Avatar and Crazy Heart picked up two awards each, but there were no lopsided wins this year.

Critical darling The Hurt Locker was shut out and went home empty handed.  The Hurt Locker has been cleaning up top honors at Critic Circle awards nationwide. Up in the Air was nominated for six awards, but only won for Best Screenplay.

Veteran actors Jeff Bridges and Meryl Streep won acting awards, and delivered particularly elegant and classy acceptance speeches.

On the television side, Dexter fared well, with John Lithgow and Michael C. Hall both winning acting awards.  HBO’s film Grey Gardens won two awards as well.  Mad Men won for Best Television Series, Drama and freshman series Glee won for best Television Series, Comedy or Musical.

Everyone’s favorite serial killer is back, as Showtime’s hit series Dexter is about to start its fourth season as well as a new animated series of webisodes. /Film brings us the Season 4 Trailer, as well as a peak at the new animated series, Dexter: Early Cuts, both of which debuted at the Dexter panel at Comic-Con.

The fourth season of Dexter revolves around Dexter and Rita’s new son, Harrison. Deborah, Dexter’s sister, will have a former flame return as the Miami Police Department attempts to track down the Trinity Killer, played by John Lithgow.

/Film mentioned that the producers and writers of Dexter reiterated that unlike the first season, this new season of Dexter would stray from the plotline originally outlined in the books.

Dexter: Early Cuts will be an animated series of webisodes, centered around Dexter and his ominous past. We’ll get to learn more about his first kills and follow him as he perfects his technique. The webisodes will surely give some insight into this awesome character.

Dexter returns to Showtime on September 29th. Dexter: Early Cuts debuts sometime in Fall 2009 on Sho.com. You can check out the trailer after the jump.

Taking advantage of the San Diego Comic-Con crowds, Lionsgate has just released clips for their Fall movies, Saw VI and Gamer.

The chilling R-rated Saw VI clip certainly ratchets up anticipation for the movie, and viewers might want to think twice about entering the insurance industry. Saw VI hits theaters on October 23, is directed by Kevin Greuter and stars Shawnee Smith ,Tobin Bell, Betsy Russell, Costas Mandylor, Mark Rolston and Peter Outerbridge.

The action thriller Gamer clip treats viewers to a future where humans can control other humans; in this case, Gerard Butler as the cult hero Kable. The film is written and directed by Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor, and also stars Michael C. Hall, Amber Valletta, John Leguizamo, Kyra Sedgwick and Logan Lerman. Gamer will be released on September 4.
