Check This Out: The ‘Doctor Who’ Fan Orchestra #3 – ‘Rose’s Theme, Doomsday’

by Jonathan Weilbaecher, Jan 30 2012 // 12:00 PM

For nearly 50 years Doctor Who has captured the imaginations of countless minds, from the very young, to the very young at heart. The internet age has allowed that active fan base to accomplish some pretty incredible things, including the ambitious Doctor Who Fan Orchestra which takes individual YouTube submissions of each instrument and re-builds themes from the show.

From the video’s description:

The Doctor Who Fan Orchestra invites musical fans of Doctor Who to take part in an online collaborative celebration of Murray Gold’s music. Participants submitted recordings for this work from November 2011 to January 2012.

This final mix includes a total of 177 submissions from 154 individual participants, ranging in age from 11 to 57, and who are located in at least 18 different countries across the world, including: United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Germany, Spain, France, Russia, Brazil, Canada, Finland, Hong Kong, Israel, Latvia, Norway, Poland, Singapore, Sweden and Switzerland.

The end result is incredible, a near flawless performance of two classic early run Murray Gold themes. The video itself is a collage of individual performances that is almost as interesting as the music they are playing. To see the pieces fit together in an intricate, 21st century weave of YouTube videos highlights this magnificent piece.

Check This Out: The First Five Minutes Of ‘Haywire’

by Jonathan Weilbaecher, Jan 10 2012 // 1:30 PM

In the next couple of weeks a very interesting new movie will be hitting theaters nationwide. What makes Haywire so intriguing is that it has a fantastic pedigree, yet it is being released in the January doldrums. Normally this would speak to the poor quality of the movie, but early word has been strong and it is hard to bet against Steven Soderbergh.

The movie is released in a couple weeks, but to help drum up more excitment the first five minutes of the movie have been released on Hulu. For those of you who are unaware of what the film is about, here is the synopsis:

Mallory Kane is a highly trained operative who works for a government security contractor in the dirtiest, most dangerous corners of the world. After successfully freeing a Chinese journalist held hostage, she is double crossed and left for dead by someone close to her in her own agency. Suddenly the target of skilled assassins who know her every move, Mallory must find the truth in order to stay alive.

Using her black-ops military training, she devises an ingenious—and dangerous—trap. But when things go haywire, Mallory realizes she’ll be killed in the blink of an eye unless she finds a way to turn the tables on her ruthless adversary.

The first five minutes showcases some of the excellent fighting this film promises to deliver. If the hundred or so minutes that follow this scene are any where near as good, we can be looking at an early year gem.

You can also check out the video and the full trailer for the film after the jump.

Check This Out: ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ Trailer Sweded

by Jonathan Weilbaecher, Jan 5 2012 // 3:00 PM

The Holiday Season is a great time for films, but on the cusp of one of the more anticipate years in cinema history, it is the trailers for 2012 films that might be the highlight. One film that fans are eagerly awaiting is Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises, sequel to the instant classic that took the world by storm in 2008.

The first long form trailer was released a few weeks ago, and now some adventurous do-gooders have taken upon themselves to recreate the magic in their own “sweded” version of the trailer. Complete with action figure action shots, and an ingenious football stadium collapse scene made with paper cut outs.

The sweded trailer is great, but we implore you to check out their youtube channel. There are more sweded trailers for your viewing pleasure and a really interesting side-by-side that plays the sweded trailer next to the original. It is extremely interesting to see it play with the original right next to it, showing how accurate these guys get with their shot construction and timing.

There are also a couple of funny little jabs at the original hidden within the sweded version of the trailer which is part of why these can be so charming. Particularly, the chanting of “que pasa,” golden stuff. You can check out the sweded Dark Knight Rises Trailer after the jump.

Super Mario 3D Land Invades Time Square

by Jonathan Weilbaecher, Nov 14 2011 // 12:00 PM

Mario has a brand new game just around the corner. To celebrate the release of Super Mario 3D Land, Nintendo took over Time Square in New York City, brining a little bit of the mushroom kingdom to throngs of fans. Set up on the streets of New York was a life size Mario dream land, complete with pipes, bouncy coin jumps and a classic flag pole at the end.

The brand new 3DS game is the first original adventure for Mario on Nintendo’s newest handheld, and anticipation could not be higher. The glasses-less 3D technology has always been impressive, but the 3DS has been lacking a lynch pin game to make people need the device. Nintendo has high hopes Super Mario 3d Land is that game. Word on the street in Mushroom Land, New York is that Nintendo might have gotten their wish.

We are most excited about the triumphant return of the Tanooki Suit, Mario’s full body raccoon outfit. This awesome costume debuted in Super Mario Bros. 3 on the original NES and has been woefully underused since. Mario has donned several full body costumes, but there was always something extra amazing about seeing our favorite plummer get his furry on.

You can catch a video of the awesome Super Mario 3D Land event after the jump.

Check Out a Promo for ‘Crash and Burn’ Starring Lee Majors and Produced by Tony Hawk

by Chris Ullrich, Sep 1 2011 // 1:00 PM

I don’t know about you but I was a huge fan of The Six Million Dollar Man when I was a kid. So much so that I hoped to one day be bionic, just like my hero Steve Austin — a man barely alive. Years and many sessions of therapy later I can now appreciate the show for what it was: cool and a lot of fun.

Of course, one of the reasons the show was so cool was Lee Majors. After The Six Million Dollar Man ended, he went on to play another cool character on TV, Hollywood stuntman Colt Seavers in The Fall Guy. That was another fun show that I watched all the time. Of course, some of that interest may have had to do with Heather Thomas, but I can’t be sure.

Lee Majors has been absent from the small screen for too long. Fortunately, pro skater and cool guy Tony Hawk, along with Lance Krall, have decided to do something about it. That something is a new show called Crash & Burn.

It’s a show about stuntmen (and women) and looks to be pretty damn funny. To help spread the word about this new show, which looks to be no more than a pilot or even, as they call it in “the biz” a pilot presentation at this point, we’ve got the promo for it to share with you today.

Let’s hope it becomes a series because it’s pretty awesome. Click through to check it out.

It’s ‘Final Destination’ Meets ‘Saved By the Bell’ In Miles Fisher’s New Video

by Joe Gillis, Aug 4 2011 // 12:30 PM

Fortunately, people have many places where they can express themselves online these days. One of the most popular is, of course, YouTube. That’s one of the main places budding filmmakers, and pretty much anyone else, can make a video, post it online and potentially get a lot of attention.

One person who’s been gaining attention for his videos is Miles Fisher. As a struggling actor he made several humorous videos and got quite a bit of attention. Now that his acting career has started to take off with roles in Final Destination 5 and J. Edgar, he hadn’t stopped making videos.

In fact, the actor reportedly went to Warner Bros with an idea for a short that could help spread awareness of its upcoming Final Destination film and the studio liked it so much they gave him the money to make it. The result is a short called New Romance which seems to be part horror homage and part Saved by the Bell. Either way, the body count it pretty high — which we can appreciate.

Check it out after the jump.

George C. Scott Watches Adam Sandler’s ‘Jack and Jill’ Trailer

by Chris Ullrich, Jul 13 2011 // 11:00 AM

It’s a great world we live in when talented people like YouTube’s Pbonanno can take two videos and combine them together to create something funny. In this case the two videos in question are footage from the 1979 George C. Scott film Hardcore, about a man searching for his daughter in the seedy underbelly of society, and the upcoming Adam Sandler “comedy” Jack and Jill where he plays himself and his wacky sister.

Adam Sandler playing both roles? I know, funny right? Um, no. Not. At. All.

To be honest, I pretty much felt the same way as Mr. C. Scott when watching the Sandler trailer. To see what I mean, take a look at the video after the break.

In it, you’ll see the exact reaction to the trailer I’m talking about. I would bet you’ll feel pretty much the same way after seeing it too.

As far as the movie goes, it’s pretty obvious someone lost a bet or something or Sandler has pictures of them with farm animals or children. That’s the only explanation for this kind of crap getting made.

Anyway, click on through for the video. If you care, Jack and Jill comes out later this year.

‘The Dark Knight Returns’ Animated Movie Could Be in the Works

by Jonathan Weilbaecher, Apr 15 2011 // 12:30 PM

DC Entertainment has been losing ground to Marvel at the multiplex over the last few years, but during that same time their animated movie department has reigned as undisputed king. Bruce Timm started crafting animated DC stories with Batman: The Animated Series in the early 90s, and has been virtually flawless ever since.

Now Bleeding Cool is reporting that the seminal comic ‘The Dark Knight Returns’ is going to be given it’s time to shine as an animated epic.

Bleeding Cool have heard from multiple sources (enough with the multiples already) that work is underway on a movie adaptation of Frank Miller and Klaus Janson’s classic The Dark Knight Returns. As you might have guessed, however, this is to be an animated adaptation, much like the recent All Star Superman or in-the-works Year One.

This won’t be the first time Frank Miller’s ‘The Dark Knight Returns’ has been animated. The classic Batman: The Animated Series episode Legends of the Dark Knight, where different era’s of Batman were lovingly homaged, including a segment modeled after ‘The Dark Knight Returns.’

Batman regular Kevin Conroy has had time to age into a great voice for this role. So hopefully the trend of keeping actors from the original series carries forward into this project.

Group Video Chat Coming to iPhone Via Fring

by Chris Ullrich, Apr 6 2011 // 8:00 AM

If you’re one of the people who love to video chat using your iPhone or Android device but often wish you could include a few more friends in the conversation, you’re in luck. Not because Apple is doing anything for you, at least not at the moment. No, it’s another company called fring to the rescue.

The company is working on a group video chat implementation for its iOS and Android apps. The update will eventually allow users to chat with up to four participants onscreen at once. For the moment this feature is in beta but the company’s developers are allowing users to sign up so they can test it out before it’s officially available in the App Store.

In a recent video, the company showcased its latest software running a group video chat session on iOS. Sadly, for whatever reason — beta software, poor wireless reception, slower iPhone 4 processor — the video is a tad choppy. Still, it’s nice to see a company taking something Apple started, building on it and trying to make it better.

Check out the video after the break.

‘The Daily Show’ Celebrates iPhone Coming to Verizon

by Chris Ullrich, Jan 12 2011 // 10:30 AM

With all the hype over the recent announcement that the iPhone is coming to Verizon, it’s nice to see at least one show offering a sober and reasoned commentary on the event. That show is, of course, The Daily Show with John Stewart. In a seven-minute spot that gets funnier by the minute, Stewart begins with iPhone users’ (including himself) troubles with AT&T.

”For the past three or four years, those of us in the iPhone community have sacrificed one thing for the ability to carry around every photograph we’ve ever taken, or song we’ve ever listened to, or home video, or compass,” Stewart said during the segment. “We have sacrificed the ability to make phone calls.”

It was supposedly so bad for Stewart that he had to send text messages by typing them out on his iPhone 4 and then having an assistant bring the phone to the message’s recipient so they could read it. John Oliver then joins in, reporting live via video chat from yesterday’s Verizon event using his AT&T iPhone. As you might expect, the quality is bad and the video call drops several times.

There’s a lot more in the video that you will enjoy, even if you’re not really caught up in the whole Verizon iPhone thing as many of us are. Funny is still funny.

Check out the video after the jump.

Daniel Radcliffe Is Harry Potter

by Chris Ullrich, Nov 29 2010 // 1:15 PM

Sometimes, at least in the minds of fans, the line between a character and the actor who portrays that character can become blurred. Often you will see fans referring to their favorite actor as the character from the movie they love.

Sadly, that affliction doesn’t seem completely confined to the fans. Apparently, some actors have that problem as well. Or, in the case of one Daniel Radcliffe and his relationship with a certain young wizard, the situation is slightly different.

Having some trouble understanding what I mean? Well, perhaps this video from Funny or Die will help you out? In it, Daniel Radcliffe explains that he isn’t, in fact, the actor portraying Harry Potter. Instead, he’s Harry Potter playing the role of actor Daniel Radcliffe.

Still confused? Well, click through and perhaps all will be illuminated.

Don Draper Says ‘What?’

by Chris Ullrich, Nov 4 2010 // 3:00 PM

In what may be one of the most profound videos ever put together, YouTube user Musicvideosthatsuck has compiled a video highlighting all of the times Mad Men character and serious power player Don Draper has uttered the word “What?” Now I’m not suggesting this video will change your life but it will give you a good idea as to the power of one word and also the skills of the actor who portrays Draper on the show: potential Superman Jon Hamm.

Even if you’re not really interested in writing, acting or much of anything else, you still have to appreciate the power of one word. In all the situations he gets into and all the people he deals with Draper wields the word “What” as a weapon, a punchline, an insult or in whatever way will make him come out on top in said situation.

As a person who appreciates good writing and good performances I can certainly appreciate this kind of thing. Made even easier, of course, when someone takes the time to put a video like this together for all to see and appreciate. Okay, enough from me, let’s get to the video — after the break of course. What?
