This week’s episode is another Deep Dive where we go, well, deep into the body of work and life of a particular creator. This week’s subject is Director and Producer Ridley Scott. whose career has been quite interesting, to say the least.
His somewhat eclectic roster of films including Alien, Blade Runner, Legend, Back Hawk Down, Thelma and Louise, Gladiator and The Martian demonstrate his keen sense of style and storytelling prowess. His films have been lauded as groundbreaking and stylistically influential to a generation of filmmakers that followed. He’s also won numbers awards, including the Academy Award for Best Picture for Gladiator. In short, he’s pretty badass.
As with our previous Deep Dive, this episode was recorded and released first for our Patrons, but now we want all of you to hear it too. It’s just that good.
If we’re being totally honest (which we try to be), we weren’t going to release this episode this week, but due to unforeseen circumstances, here it is. It’s better this way, really, the actual episode we were going to do for this week would probably have been shit. So, consider yourselves lucky.
Thanks for listening!

It’s a brand new episode of The Flickcast and on this one Chris and Joe move into a different dimension: time. That’s right, time. As in they go back in time . . . back to the beginning.
If you’ve ever wondered how it all started and what shaped and created our intrepid hosts, then you’re in for a treat. This is that story.
But don’t worry. There’s no radioactive spiders, fleeing far away planets right before they explode or parents being killed in an alley next to a movie theater. And absolutely no pearl necklaces falling to the ground in excruciating slo-mo. Not this time, anyway.
Instead, the boys take it all the way back and talk about the things that made them they way they are today. Movies, television, music, games, comics and many of the other influences that shaped their impressionable young minds. In other words: This is their origin story.
It’s pretty epic. Thanks for listening.

On this episode Chris and Joe once again dive into a subject they don’t discuss very often: horror movies. That’s right, in honor of Halloween coming up this weekend, the boys talk about some of their favorite horror films, what they like and don’t like about the genre and generally what scares them.
But, to be honest, they’re not experts on horror movies. Fortunately, they’ve brought in a very special guest to help: Scott Weinberg.
That’s right, noted film critic, podcaster, producer and horror film expert Scott Weinberg is on the show this week. So you know this episode is gonna be chock full of some spooky horror movie goodness (and badness). And that’s not all.
The trio also get back to their roots with discussions on their first horror movie experiences, the movies that made them fall in love with movies and why Scott loves horror movies so much. Plus, the usual more. In fact, much, much more.
It’s a great episode. Thanks for listening.

On this episode Chris and Joe tackle a subject they don’t discuss very often: horror movies. That’s right, in honor of it being October and with Halloween coming up, the boys talk about some of their favorite horror films, what they like and don’t like about the genre and generally what scares them. Hint: it’s not clowns, although they are pretty scary.
And even if they don’t get completely into horror movies this time, they will on a special upcoming episode with a great guest. You’ll want to be here for that one. Meantime, they also get back into upcoming Marvel film and TV, heap even more praise on Enola Holmes, Millie Bobby Brown and the rest of the cast and renew their commitment to all-things Star Trek. Plus, the usual more.
This is gonna be a shorter episode synopsis as the actual episode is late due to some technical difficulties. So, we’ll just let it (and Chris & Joe) speak for themselves. Thanks for listening.

It’s a brand new episode of The Flickcast. We’re still doing this! High fives all around.
Joe is off this week so Chris, and special guest Rick Marshall of Digital Trends, get deep into all-things movies, television and pop culture with discussions ranging from Zack Snyder’s Justice League to parenting during a pandemic to toxic fandom, the future of movies and movie theaters, their first “adult” movie experiences, what they’re watching and looking forward to and a whole lot more.
No really, they talk about a lot of stuff . . . and most of it’s pretty damn interesting. Why not give it a listen?

Another week has passed and we’ve got a brand new episode of The Flickcast for you. Truth be told, it’s a good one. It’s also somewhat serious given the recent tragic loss of icon Leonard Nimoy. But we also manage to have some fun too, don’t worry.
On this week’s show, Chris and Joe talk about a whole bunch of stuff including the singing talents of James Marsters, the recently announced sequels to Alien and Blade Runner, the awesome Power Rangers short that’s taken the Interwebs by storm, the power and influence of Star Trek and, of course, the boys relate their favorite Star Trek and Leonard Nimoy stories in an attempt to pay fitting tribute the man himself. There’s also the ever-present more.
Picks this week include Chris’ pick of the movie The Wrath of Khan and Joe’s pick of the Star Trek: The Next Generation classic two-part episode Unification.
As always, if you have comments, questions, critiques, offers of sponsorship, or whatever, feel free to hit us up in the comments, on Twitter, at Facebook, Google+ or via email.

For all of you who have been buying into the ‘drama’ surrounding Prometheus’ ultimate rating, we have some good news for you. Fox has confirmed that the moody, dark and probably terrifying sci-fi film will indeed be rated R for sci-fi violence including intense images, and brief language.
Many people never believed that a PG-13 rating was possible for the subject matter, so when it took this long to get a confirmed rating people were getting nervous. It also didn’t help that Ridley Scott has been telling people conflicted things about the movie, the process and the rating for months now.
Speaking of which, Prometheus must be setting a new record for the most outright and open deception from a filmmaker to his audience. Scott has gone on record with several quotes that don’t seem to right based on the footage we are seeing. He already famously said the film would not be a prequel to Alien and only have a core DNA similarity with that franchise. Watching the trailer for 2 seconds pretty much disproves that concept.

Since its announcement last June, gamers have been awaiting the arrival of the latest Alien franchise title. With the lackluster response from the most recent Aliens vs. Predator title, it looks like it is up to Aleins: Colonial Marines to pick up the pieces of the franchise and put them back in the right places.
SEGA makes an odd choice of making this trailer fully cinematic while the previous one released featured in game footage. The reason behind that is the game has a look and feel that we have experienced many times before with FPS Marines versus Aliens gameplay. If they focus too much on this in the trailer instead of building on the possible story points like the chaotic nature of a full battalion of marines taking on an infestation, the game could potentially just feel like one of those “been there, played that” scenarios.
In terms of scale, Aliens: Colonial Marines may be the largest single player battle gamers have had the opportunity to encounter. Expect lots of grizzly cut scenes with dozens of different marines acting as cannon fodder to the xenomorph menace.
For now, check out the trailer after the jump. Stick to the Flickcast for more on Aliens: Colonial Marines coming to the PC, PlayStation 3 and XBox 360 scheduled for Fall of 2012.

When looking back at the most truly terrifying moments in film in the last thirty years, some can be found in both Alien and its sequel Aliens. Though the series started to focus more on action than horror in its later iterations, no one can say the first time they saw Sigorney Weaver face to face with a xenomorph that it wasn’t a horrifying experience.
The Alien franchise has always had a home in video games with everything from side scrolling adventures on the NES to the much acclaimed first person shooter Aliens vs. Predator titles on PC in 1999. SEGA is now bringing out two new Aliens titles over the coming months. The most prominent of the two comes in the form of Aliens: Colonial Marines for PC, XBox 360 and PlayStation 3.
Aliens: Colonial Marines has been a subject of much discussion in the video game world. At one point, there was a game set to release in 2002 entitled Aliens: Colonial Marines which ended up being canceled. Later, SEGA revived the name with a new development team and concept, slating it for a 2009 release. It would end up being delayed for about three years in favor of development of the updated Aliens vs. Predators title which came out to mixed reviews.
Now, Aliens: Colonial Marines looks like it is finally set to come out in 2012 from Gearbox Software. Gearbox is the team that put together the Opposing Force and Blue Shift expansions for the original Half-Life and most recently released the now infamous Duke Nukem Forever.

Futuristic sci-fi films are always a good time. We’re lucky enough to live in a time where we have already surpassed these future milestones set in certain classic science fiction films and novels, in which humanity is to be enslaved by robots, or the earth is to be destroyed, or crime is to be abolished.
Sadly, we haven’t hit these milestones, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t still a few we can’t hit. Luckily, super fan Michael Hobson over at Tremulant Design put together this full infographic on when certain sci-fi milestones are set to hit, so that we have the fully skinny on when to expect these fictional dates.
In his studies, Hobson found out a few fun details some may not be aware of. Such as the fact that the events in Avatar take place between Alien and Aliens. Or that we can expect some pretty violent reality TV to hit the airwaves in less than a decade.
So take a look at the full graphic after the jump, and bone up for when we decide to send nukes into the sun to jump start it, or when art is banned and we live in a totalitarian society. Never a bad idea to be prepared for such events.

What is it with Ridley Scott? He doesn’t seem to be able to leave well enough alone. First he decides that what the world needs is an Alien prequel/sequel/spin-off with his upcoming Prometheus, in 3D no less.
Now he’s apparently come to the conclusion that what the world needs is a sequel/prequel to to his classic 1982 sci-fi masterpiece Blade Runner. Yes, you read that right. Mr. Scott will reportedly be directing a new installment of Blade Runner.
As it was when news of Prometheus first broke, it’s not clear if this new film will be a sequel or a prequel to the 1982 film that was loosely based on Philip K. Dick’s novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? (answer: they do) Also not clear at the moment is if the new film will, in any way, feature Harrison Ford. My guess is it probably will, if only in a cameo.
Truth be told I find the idea of a Blade Runner sequel/prequel far less appetizing than a sequel/prequel to Alien. After all, James Cameron did a pretty great job with Aliens, which showed the franchise had some life in it. Plus, they ended up making a few more sequels which were less appealing. Still, they made them.
Blade Runner, on the other hand, has stood the test of time on its own. It’s evolved from a rather unsuccessful commercial debut into one of the most revered sci-fi classics of all time. Plus, it has never had a sequel, which also serves to add to its power and mystique.
