It’s going to be a very green (as in $) for Roland Emmerich. For a long time Michael Bay seemed to be the go-to mega director in Hollywood. Well, it seems Emmerich, director of the recent disaster movie 2012, is set to change all that. At least in the sense of enormous paydays that is.
2012, which has gone onto make nearly $700 million worldwide (much of that coming from international audiences) since its November release is reported to pay out $100 million to Emmerich alone:
“According to several executives who saw the deal as it was being shopped and signed last year, Emmerich got a traditional $20 million advance against 20 percent of the first-dollar gross profits.
Based on where the box office stands today and the first-dollar gross deal, Emmerich will take home $100 million, all the executives agreed.”
While the dollar figure seems enormous it should be noted that Emmerich is well known for micro-producing his own projects. By the time he brings something to a studio everything is set to go (e.g. budget, storyboards, etc.). Add to this the fact he owned the script, produced and directed 2012 and it becomes pretty clear the man deserved his share, regardless of how grossly inflated it may seem.
Regardless, way to go Emmerich! I’m sure you’ll put some of that money toward the ID4 sequels you talked about. Fingers crossed.

The B
razilian “Wonder Twins” of comic art, Fabio Moon and Gabriel Ba, give us their first Vertigo book in the form of Daytripper #1 this week. These guys have worked with top talents in the industry like Joss Whedon (Dark Horse’s Sugar Shock), Matt Fraction (Casanova), and Gerard Way (Umbrella Academy).
Here we have their first solo work in the tradition of Vertigo focusing on the small psychological things of daily life like “how does a down on his luck obituary writer get out of the shadow of his famous father?” Apparently the ending to the first issue is a twist for the fantastic, and not at all expected. I’d expect nothing less from these extremely creative guys. Anytime these guys come out with something new, I can’t snatch it from the stacks fast enough.
The rest of the week is fairly light. The other book I’ll be getting is Invincible Iron Man, in which we finally come to figure out how Thor and Captain America “reboot” Tony Stark. I think I’ve exclaimed enough how much I love this book, and to say the least Fraction and Larocca have not slowed down at all.

CBS announced on Tuesday that it will be cancelling daytime soap As The World Turns after 54 years and 13,000 episodes, according to Variety. You might wonder why this news is relevant to The Flickcast, but the slow disappearance of scripted daytime dramas causes shock-waves throughout the entire entertainment industry, whether you were a fan or not.
Earlier this year, The Guiding Light was canceled after 72 years on the air. Anytime scripted dramas are being dropped, we should take note, because it could set a dangerous precedent. Desperate networks are pulling the plug on original product, and replacing it with game shows or other alternatives. There is no question these cancellations signal the end of an era.
Take a look at what NBC did to their prime time schedule. They did the unspeakable, and pretty much gave up on cost-prohibitive scripted television. Now we get Jay Leno, for better or worse, five times a week. That’s five hours of scripted television a week wiped clean from the slate.

In news that shouldn’t really be happening, it looks like NBC is taking one of it’s less popular Saturday Night Live skits and producing a 30-minute Christmas special around the character. “Gilly” is a Kristin Wiig character that started a few months back about a troublemaker in gradeschool who constantly causes damage to her fellow classmates. The skit is meant to be a spoof of old-time comic strips such as “Little Lulu”.
According to the Associated Press, the show will be a standard clip show with many old SNL holiday skits, all hosted by Gilly.
“SNL Presents: A Very Gilly Christmas” will air Dec. 17 at 8 p.m. The two-hour special, the first for “SNL” since 2002, will be led by Wiig’s Gilly, an ever-smiling Annie-lookalike who delights in violent mischief. The special will feature new sketches with Gilly and highlights of classic holiday “SNL” sketches…

With Ryan Reynolds becoming a hot commodity in the world of Comic Book films, between getting signed as Green Lantern and Deadpool, it looks like things are still heating up for a Deadpool film over at Fox. CHUD recently got word that Zombieland writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick are allegedly penning a script for Deadpool.
“While nothing is official just yet, it looks like Fox could be hiring Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, the writers of Zombieland, to script the adventures of the Merc With A Mouth. I did my due diligence and asked around but couldn’t get a solid confirmation, so regard this one as a strong rumor… But if it’s more than a rumor – and my source tells me there could be a trade break announcing this within days – it’s actually a very good sign for Deadpool.”
Most of the film and comic fan community was torn on the thought of a Deadpool film after seeing what the studio did with the character in May’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine, but Reynolds himself stated that the film will be “just like the comics”, including the mask, schizophrenia, and demolition of the fourth wall.
Up next for the Zombieland scribes is actually a sequel to the highly successful undead comedy. Word is that Zombieland 2 will start production next year, and will be shot in 3D.

We’ve shown you some great stuff from Rob Marshall’s upcoming musical NINE already, from some stills to a featurette to a trailer. Now, as the film gets closer to the release date, as usually happens, a brand new trailer has just dropped.
This time around, as with previous versions, the trailer further highlights the musical spectacle and acting power put together for the film. It also gives a bit more information about the story of the main character, director Guido Contini (Daniel Day-Lewis), and his effect on the woman in his life. We also catch more glimpses of some of the musical numbers and more of the other terrific cast members, including Kate Hudson, Nicole Kidman, Penelope Cruz and Judi Dench
Expect a full review of NINE here at The Flickcast soon. Until then, enjoy this latest trailer (after the jump of course) of what will surely be yet another Rob Marshall musical masterpiece. NINE opens in NY and LA on December 18 and everywhere else on Christmas Day.

Once Peter Jackson announced to the world that he would be writing and producing an adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and that it would be two movies, there has been speculation as to just how the book will be split. Will it be cut in two and be a two-part adaptation like others are doing for the last Harry Potter and Twilight films or will the first movie be based on the book and the second serve as a bridge to Jackson’s Lord of the Rings?
Well, wonder no more because Jackson himself has cleared up the mystery, according to an interview he gave recently. The two movies will be based completely on the book.
“The second Hobbit script is still based on the Hobbit novel,” Jackson said in a group interview after a press conference for The Lovely Bones. “The Hobbit novel is in two parts.” Well, that sounds pretty definitive, doesn’t it?
In case you’re not familiar, The Hobbit tells the story of young Bilbo Baggins’ quest for a treasure guarded by the dragon Smaug. Written prior to The Lord of the Rings, it establishes some of the characters for that trilogy, including the wizard Gandalf and the evil Gollum, and the world of Middle Earth in which they live.
The first Hobbit movie is due in theaters in 2011, with part two following in 2012.

Yesterday, we brought you a brand new clip from this week’s episode of Community entitled “Comparative Religion.” In this week’s episode, the A-story is about Shirley’s (Yvette Nicole Brown) Christmas party, while the B-story is about Mike the Bully (guest star Anthony Michael Hall) tormenting Joel McHale and the gang.
The Breakfast Club alum makes his first guest appearance in what could prove to be a recurring role in the series, as a middle-aged, mustachioed tough-guy who doesn’t seem to like the male members of the study group.
In this clip, Mike sets his sights on Abed (Danny Pudi) after all the Christmas cookies are gone. Jeff (Joel McHale) decides to do the right thing and step in. This episode also marks the first time that Anthony Michael Hall and series regular Chevy Chase have shared a screen since they played father and son in 1983′s National Lampoon’s Vacation.
Check out the clip below, and be sure to catch Community this Thursday on NBC(9:30-10 p.m. ET).

A few months ago, we first reported that the Kids in The Hall, Lorne Michael’s bastard Canadian comedy troop, would be making it’s return to (Canadian) TV with an all new series entitled Death Comes To Town. It looks like we’re even closer to getting a return of the outrageous comedy team, as the first trailer has just been released.
The premise feels a little bit like the plot to Hot Fuzz. A local, everyday, suburban town gets it’s world rocked when a series of vicious murders take place, around the same time that Death shows up via Greyhound bus. The entire gang steps in to portray the locals (in typical KIDH fashion), including Dave Foley, Kevin McDonald, Scott Thompson, Mark McKinney, and Bruce McCulloch.
The story will be doled out in an 8 part mini-series, which will only be available on Canadian Broadcast TV at first (Hello internet download). No news yet on whether it will be syndicated on US TV, but if Lorne Michaels gave the group a chance once, he’s likely to do it 21 years later.
Check out the first promo of Death Comes To Town after the jump and be sure to keep it here for more info as it comes to us.
