That’s right, it’s apparently time for an all-new episode of The Flickcast. Apologies for being late, but at least you have something to entertain you on a Monday.
On this week’s show Chris and Joe talk about all sorts of stuff including podcasting coming to Google Play (here’s a link to The Flickcast, btw), the future of public transport, the upcoming new Star Trek series, James Cameron’s latest plans for Avatar sequels, the Defenders series on Netflix, Mr. Robot, Hollywood’s latest horrible thing and assholes who talk or text in movie theaters. Plus, there’s the usual more, more, more.
Picks this week include Chris’ pick of Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight and Joe’s pick of the band The Dan Reed Network.
As always, if you have comments, questions, critiques, offers of sponsorship, or whatever, feel free to hit us up in the comments, on Twitter, at Facebook, Google+ or via email.

With all the big budget Hollywood movies coming out each week it’s also nice to pay a bit of attention to the little guy (or girl). Indie filmmakers of today often do it with talent, style and innovation. Plus, they are potentially tomorrow’s big budget directors.
Just look at someone like Gareth Edwards. He made a little indie movie called Monsters and now he’s directing the big budget studio reboot of Godzilla. See, it can happen.
This time around we turn the Indie Spotlight on Brian T. Jaynes Patient Zero. The zombie apocalypse horror movie has it’s world premiere next week at Splatterfest. Until then, here’s a bit of synopsis to help pique your interest.
The highly anticipated prequel to director Brian T. Jaynes hit feature, “Humans Vs. Zombies” shows the genesis of “the beginning of the end,” and how genetic experimentation lead to the creation of Patient Zero, the first infectious zombie.
Check out the trailer for Patient Zero after the break. If you can’t make the screening in Huston, don’t worry. The movie hits DVD, etc. on September 25th.

Two things in particular that are cool and go well together: Comic-Con and great art. With that in mind it makes complete sense that one of my favorite groups of people, the folks who run the Alamo Drafthouse in Austin, TX, have put together a great collection of contemporary movie poster art and are bringing it to Cominc-Con next week.
They will be located in the main exhibition hall in booth #433 and will release new posters, have artists signings as well as offer rare archival posters. All poster releases will be announced via their Twitter account: @MondoNews
As if that wasn’t enough, Mondo is also working with The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Margaret Herrick Library to preserve the company’s growing collection of original film posters designed by contemporary graphic artists. The first group of the Alamo Drafthouse’s Mondo posters arriving at the Herrick will include the latest print, a poster for the classic horror film “Frankenstein” (1931), created by Drew Struzan.
You can take a look at past Mondo art (including the awesome They Live poster by Shepard Fairey above) by going to their website.
For those of you going to Comic-Con next week this is sure to be a must see. I know we’ll be there.

Each day we will provide you with capsule reviews and impressions of the films we see at Fantastic Fest, along with any activities or interviews we attend. Complete reviews and interviews can be found on the site in upcoming weeks.
Day one of fantastic fest we hit the ground running and went straight from the airport to pick up our press badges. We managed to cram in three screenings for the day, starting at 4pm. Not too shabby.
Screening: Stone. Directed by John Curran and starring Edward Norton, Robert De Niro, Frances Conroy, and Milla Jovovich. Summary: A convicted arsonist (Norton) looks to manipulate a parole officer (De Niro) into a plan to secure his parole by placing his beautiful wife (Jovovich) in the lawman’s path.
Jane’s thoughts: This was an unusual experience for me. I was half expecting this to play out like a thriller-but instead I watched a slow (but evenly paced) meditative, existential character study.
The performances were great, but I can’t say I enjoyed the film (to its credit,we discussed it a great deal afterwards.)
The characters in Stone never quite feel like actual people, rather they represent certain characteristics of humanity. Their stories slowly unfold to reveal that in the end, we are back at the beginning and haven’t moved an inch.

Even though our minds are focused more on recovering from E3 and planning for San Diego Comic-Con, that doesn’t mean we’ve forgotten one of our favorite film festivals. Fantastic Fest, the annual fete featuring genre films in Austin, TX is near and dear to our hearts so as we get info on it we will dutifully bring it to you.
This time around the fest has announced some early films and special guests that will be part of the fun from September 23-30. Among these new announcements are appearances by director Stuart Gordon and Reanimator star Jeffrey Combs as well as a spotlight on Norway and its crop of young filmmakers making horror and other genre fare such as Roar Uthaug and the acclaimed Cold Prey.
Click through for the full press release with all the detailed scoop. Stay tuned right here for all the news on Fantastic Fest as we get it.
