Netflix’s Delay, Mortal Kombat, and a Potential New Zod For ‘Superman: Man of Steel’ Are all ‘On The Radar’

by The Flickcast, Mar 25 2011 // 4:30 PM

Welcome to another edition of  On the Radar where we delve into all corners of the entertainment, tech and geek Internets for news, views and whatnot that may have escaped our regular coverage during the week. Let is know if we missed something interesting.

Let’s get started!

• The first reboot of the Spider-Man franchise hasn’t even gotten a trailer yet, but James Vanderbelt is already locked in to write a sequel for Sony.

• We love the original series The Wire, but one question we never asked was “What if it was Written as a Classic Novel?”

• Turns out millennials aren’t the only reason for the degradation of the English language, as both LOL and OMG seem to have a pretty deep history.

• If last night’s episode of Community wasn’t enough Pulp Fiction for you, how about these original Pulp Fiction action figures?

• In more casting news for Superman: Man of Steel, star of Boardwalk Empire Michael Shannon is in talks to play the film’s villain.

• Just after Netflix’s deal with Showtime’s original series went sour, Starz has issued a 90-day delay for new original programming to hit the instant servers.

DC Lowering The Price Of Comics to $2.99 Starting January

by Matt Raub, Oct 8 2010 // 7:00 AM

Need proof that major comic book publishers fear that print comics are a dying commodity? News from DC’s camp may just be that. Word has recently come in that the megapublisher will be changing all current comics that are priced at $3.99 to be slashed down to $2.99 starting in January of 2011.

From a DC press release:

“As Co-Publishers, we listened to our fans and to our partners in the retail community who told us that a $3.99 price point for 32 pages was too expensive. Fans were becoming increasingly reluctant to sample new titles and long term fans were beginning to abandon titles and characters that they’d collected for years.” said Dan DiDio, DC Comics Co-Publisher.

“We needed a progressive pricing strategy that supports our existing business model and, more importantly, allows this creative industry to thrive for years to come. With the exceptions of oversized comic books, like annuals and specials, we are committed to a $2.99 price point.”

When taking into account mini-series, annuals and specials, more than 80% of DC’s comic books will be priced at $2.99.

This effects many of the major titles and ongoing stories such as American Vampire, Batman: The Dark Knight, Green Lantern: Emerald Warriors, and JSA All-Stars as well as many licensed titles like Gears of War, God of War, Kane & Lynch, and Ratchet & Clank. All of those titles will now be slashed down to $2.99.

‘God Of War’ Goes Indie With A New Fan Trailer

by Matt Raub, Aug 5 2010 // 10:00 AM

Since the dawn of the Internet, everybody with a handheld camera and an imagination has been throwing together testaments to their favorite piece of fiction in what we love to call “fan films.” Since then, the term has gotten a bit of a bad rap, which conjures up this gritty, poorly shot piece with worse acting and editing than your uncle’s home videos. However, this newest piece is an example of how, in some cases, those rules have completely gone out the window.

From the people who brought us Inglourious Plummers, a Tarantino-esque spoof of both Inglorious Basterds and The Super Mario Bros., comes this brand new trailer for God Of War. The best part is that it’s nothing like the God of War you’re used to. This trailer is done in the same vein of a Sam Mendes or Wes Anderson film. Purely indie, even down to the use of the song Home by Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros.

We can’t figure out what it is we love about this trailer. Whether it’s the fact that our hero rocks an Adidas track jacket and tennis rackets (his “Blades of Chaos”) or the fact that the song makes the whole thing. Either way, it’s pretty awesome, and definitely worth a watch for both fans of movies and video games.

Check out the trailer after the jump and of course this begs the question when we’ll get to see another trailer. Perhaps Gears of War done as a romantic comedy?

‘God Of War III’ Gets A New Trailer

by Matt Raub, Feb 19 2010 // 9:00 AM

Back in November, lots of PlayStation 3 owners got to enjoy the classic games God of War and God of War 2 once again, this time with a new upscaled look to accommodate their fancy HDTVs. With that, a reinstated excitement for the upcoming third installment of the game was found.

The games follow Kratos, a Spartan soldier who makes a deal with Ares in order to slay his enemies. That deal immediately turns sour as he becomes the God of War’s right-hand man, killing thousands. Kratos inadvertantly kills his family in the process and vows to take down Ares. From there, the following games become incredibly deep, with plenty of references to all things Greek Mythology.

The newest game involves Kratos waging war against the gods of Olympus, with the titans on his side. The game hits stores on March 16th, and the newest trailer gives us just that much more to get excited about.

Check out the trailer for God of War III after the jump, and keep it here for updates and more for the upcoming title.
