Google+ App Arrives for iPhone

by Chris Ullrich, Jul 19 2011 // 10:00 AM

It’s a great day for those of you currently using Googles new Google+ service and also Apple’s iPhone. Why? Because it’s the day Apple finally approved the Google+ app for the iPhone of course.

This has been a point of some contention among iPhone using Google+ testers and now it looks like Apple has heard their requests and let this one through. Of course, when the Google+ serrvice launched on June 28th there was an app for Android available immediately. Makes sense, right?

Now we’ve got the iOS version. Google+ for iOS is supported on the iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 as long as the device is running iOS version 3.1 or later.

Ready to get it? Head on over to the iTunes Store and go nuts!

UPDATE: As of a few minutes ago the app has been updated in the iTunes App Store. So, if you’re not using version 1.0.1.1809 (you can tell by touching the gear at the top left of your screen in the app) then you should uninstall the old version and then download and install the new one. You’re welcome.

App Review: Hulu Plus for the iPhone

by Sebastian Suchecki, Jul 22 2010 // 9:00 AM

Since the announcement of Hulu’s pay service (aptly titled Hulu Plus), the big question on everyone’s mind is simple: Why pay for a service that I was getting for free? Well, we’re happy to say that it’s definitely worth it. The worth became apparent to me as I stood in a 45 minute line at Comic-Con in San Diego and passed the time by watching episodes of Family Guy and The Office.

You may be saying to yourself: “I have plenty of videos on my iPhone so who cares.” and before today I could agree with you. There is something incredibly freeing about having access to the handful of movies or TV shows stored on your iPhone. The wonderful new Hulu Plus app gives you instant access to every episode of hundreds of different TV shows and movies.

Unlike previous streaming technologies, such as Slingbox, that required WiFi, the videos streamed seamlessly using the 3G network and the quality was on par with any video purchased in iTunes. Another concern that usually pops up with programs like this is how it will handle multitasking when faced with oncoming texts and phone calls.

Hulu Plus performs admirably by reloading the video where you left off, rather than restarting from the beginning.

New Apps Website for Reading Comics on Phones

by Jennifer Tomooka, Aug 11 2009 // 4:30 PM

Comic book fans who have been frustrated with trying to find apps to read their comics in a crowded Apple App Store are one step closer to enjoying one stop shopping. Genus, a software development firm based in L.A. that specializes in mobile devices, has created findcomicapps.com, a website for apps created for reading comics on the iPhone and other mobile platforms.

Publisher’s Weekly describes findcomicapps.com as a site that gathers together 13 different comics mobile app developers—among them Kamikaze, Comixology, Dark Horse, Uclick, Keenspot, DC Comics and Robot Comics—and their applications and titles. The site has been organized by Genus co-CEOs, Helen Cho Anthros and Melissa Pope, to offer easy access to apps developed to read comics on mobile devices.  Genus unveiled Kamikaze, an app designed to read comics on the iPhone, earlier this year at the New York Comic-Con, and Anthros and Pope were also on hand during the San Diego Comic-Con in July to showcase an updated version of Kamikaze that included new titles and enhanced functionality.

The site has been developed as a neutral zone for the advancement of all mobile applications for comics. Currently, most of the apps are for the iPhone, but the site includes some apps for the Android platform and they plan on adding more. “As more apps for other platforms are developed our goal is to add them to the site,” said Anthros. The site anticipates new releases every week from developers across all platforms.

“It’s no secret how entangled, buried, and confusing it can be to navigate through the App Store’s enormous success and find what you’re looking for,” said Anthros. “We wanted to find a way to aggregate the mobile comics community into one place where consumers can go to find out what comic books are available on mobile platforms,” added Pope.

Could These Be in the Next iPhone OS3 Update?

by Joe Gillis, Jul 1 2009 // 3:00 PM

iphon3gsliv061911Over at the iPhone Blog they’re showing what’s supposed to be be in the next update to the iPhone OS. This update will push the version to 3.1 and is reportedly almost ready to be released.

Here’s what the iPhone blog guys say is going to be in the update:

* Voice Control now works over Bluetooth
* Updated AT&T profile to 4.2 — MMS is now enabled or at least has a button
* Improvements to OpenGL and Quartz.
* iPhone vibrates when moving icons
* Non-destructive video editing. Trimming a clip no longer saves over the original. “Save as. . . ” option now available.
* APIs to allow third party apps to access videos and edit them.
* Updated modem firmware to 5.08.01

No way to really know if this is actually what will appear in the update (Unless you happen to be a developer). Truth be told, some of us here at The Flickcast are developers, but we can’t say one way or the other unless we want Apple to get angry — and nobody wants that.

But if is true, this will surly be a great improvement for iPhone users. I’m especially encouraged by the inclusion of MMS in this new update. But having a button isn’t the end of the story. AT&T still needs to enable the feature on their network. Knowing them, it will probably take way longer than it should.
