Review: ‘Valentine’s Day’

by Shannon Hood, Feb 12 2010 // 1:00 PM

I liked this movie quite a bit  when I first saw it in 2003, and it was called Love, Actually.  This is nothing but a watered down and americanized version of the British movie, and it is mired in mediocrity.  Just think of this as the ugly stepsister of Love, Actually.

Despite a massive ensemble cast (Jessica Alba, Kathy Bates, Jessica Biel, Bradley Cooper, Eric Dane, Patrick Dempsey, Jamie Foxx, Jennifer Garner, Topher Grace, Anne Hathaway, Taylor Swift, Taylor Lautner, Julia Roberts, Shirley MacClaine, Ashton Kutcher, Queen Latifah, Emma Roberts, and George Lopez) the film lacks any real zip, and for a film about Valentine’s Day, it lacks heart. Don’t let all that star power fool you.

There are a myriad of storylines woven throughout the movie, which takes place on Valentine’s Day, in Los Angeles.  Most of the principals are connected to one another in one way or another, and their connections are slowly revealed throughout the movie.  Some of the stories work quite well, and others just don’t work at all.

Ashton Kutcher plays Reed, a florist who proposes to his less than thrilled girlfriend Morley (Jessica Alba.)  His best friend Julia (Jennifer Garner) is giddy over her new boyfriend (Patrick Dempsey), who is actually a two timing married man. Her best friend Kara (Jessica Biel) is the desperate and lonely career girl with no one to spend Valentine’s Day with.

Behind The Scenes on ‘The A-Team’

by Bob Starr, Oct 23 2009 // 7:00 AM

Bradley CooperEntertainment Tonight took a trip to the set of  The A-Team and got some behind the scenes footage. While they primarily speak to Bradley Cooper (Lt. Templeton “Faceman” Peck) and Jessica Biel (as yet unnamed former love interest of “Faceman”) there is a brief meeting with Quinton “Rampage” Jackson (Sgt. “B.A.” Baracus) and his iconic mohawk.

I wish I could say the clip gives us riveting information about the upcoming film. Unfortunately, ET decided to delve into “the big question”, “Is there an A-Team love story?”  Seriously, ET? Show me one person who actually asked that question.

Anyway, ET went there and in return we get to see some of the most inane banter between Jessica Biel and an ET reporter ever. In other farthest-thing-from-spoiler-news we also find out Cooper’s dietary habits to get in shape for the role. Way to go ET! You truly know how to bring the fans what they want (please note sarcasm).

Alright, complaining aside it’s finally good to see some video of these actors as their respective characters. The A-Team comes to theaters June 11, 2010.  Check out the clip after the jump.

First Look At Jessica Biel in ‘The A-Team’

by Chris Ullrich, Oct 5 2009 // 1:15 PM

jessica-biel-the-a-team-smallOver the last few weeks we’ve had the first looks at the The A-Team’s brand new van, the assembled team and Bradley Cooper’s “Faceman” showing his skills with automatic weapons. But until now, there was one other piece of the casting puzzle that was missing: Jesssica Biel’s character. Now, thanks to the fine folks at Geek Tyrant, we’ve got the fist pics of her as well.

As Biel’s character wasn’t in the original series, I’m not as interested to see what she looks like in the movie — other than the more obvious reasons. It was more important to find out how closely the film’s new team, which includes Liam Neeson, Sharlito Copley, “Rampage” Jackson and the aforementioned Bradley Cooper, would stack up to their series originals. Fortunately, they stack up very well.

With all the great pics coming out showing how much director Joe Carnahan seems to be both paying homage and modernizing the look of The A-Team, really only one other question remains about the cast: Does “Rampage” Jackson’s character sport a Mohawk like Mt. T did in the original series? As they say, inquiring minds want to know.

With all the info starting to come out now about the film, its just a matter of time before we find out the truth behind this very important piece of info. My guess right now? He does.

The A-Team hits theaters on June 11, 2010. Check out a larger pic of Biel’s character after the jump.

More Set Photos from ‘The A-Team’

by Bob Starr, Oct 3 2009 // 9:00 AM

Faceman with gunAs more and more news comes out about Joe Carnahan’s upcoming remake of The A-Team I’ve grown very interested, and anxious. When I first heard about the film I was skeptical. Was this to be another comedic derivitive of a somewhat serious show much like the Starsky and Hutch movie starring Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson?

Alright, I realize there was something inherently funny about the original A-Team series, but it was the Eighties and that’s what television was like back then. Strip away the one liners and jabs and the core of the show made an effort to follow a somewhat serious vein.

To that end, it appears Carnahan is determined to make this a great action film (If you’ve seen Smokin’ Aces, you’ll know what I’m talking about) based on some more set photos. Testament to this are the shots of Bradley Cooper rehearsing on set with an assault rifle in hand.  It looks pretty intense and…okay, I’ll just say it, awesome!

Fortunately, as serious as Carnhan may take the film it certainly looks as though he’s preserving the original look.  Seeing the cast of Liam Neeson as John “Hannibal” Smith, Bradley Cooper as Templeton “Faceman” Peck, Quinton “Rampage” Jackson as B.A. Baracus, and Sharlto Copley as H.M. “Howling Mad” Murdock in costume instantly invokes images of the series I refused to miss each week.  I can almost hear the theme song playing in my head when I see the pictures.

While it remains to be seen if Jackson actually has a Mohawk under his cap, Neeson’s grey hair, Cooper’s suit jacket, and Copley’s baseball cap make it clear to me this film will pay proper homage to the series I grew up with. Granted, it’s still hard to gauge without seeing some actual footage but so far I’m sold!

The A-Team opens in theaters June 11, 2010. Check out some bigger photos after the jump.

New ‘A-Team’ Team Photo Hits the ‘Net

by Chris Ullrich, Oct 1 2009 // 9:15 AM

a-team-team-1-smallWell, it was bound to happen sooner or later because you can’t really hide anything from the Internet these days. In spite of the best efforts by studios and their minions, important things have a way of getting out — like a new photo of The A-Team team that recently surfaced at ComingSoon. Previously, we had a photo of the team’s van in action and now in this new pic we get our first real glimpse at the new team, which includes Liam Neeson, Bradley Cooper, Sharlito Copley and “Rampage” Jackson.

After seeing this pic I gotta say they all look pretty darn good. Although, with Joe Carnahan at the helm I was sorta hoping for a pic of the team doing what it does best: shooting machine guns, flipping cars and blowing stuff up. Still, this is a pretty cool image anyway and I’m sure sooner or later (Probably sooner) we will get photos like that. Plus, we’ll probably get a photo of Jessica Biel in uniform at some point as well.

With this kind of cast and knowing what Caranahan can do with action, this movie is shaping up to be one I’m excited to see. Unfortunately, like the rest of you, I’ll have to wait until June 11, 2010 to do that. Well, at least we can look forward to more photos like this along the way which, given the nature of things, is almost certain to happen.

Check out a larger version of the pic after the jump.

Night Owl joins ‘The A-Team’

by Bob Starr, Sep 22 2009 // 10:00 AM

patrick-wilson-1The A-Team cast continues to grow with the addition of Patrick Wilson who will play a CIA operative in the new film. Wilson joins the star lineup of Liam Neeson, Bradley Cooper, Quinton Jackson, Sharlto Copley and Jessica Biel.  If you don’t recognize Wilson’s name you’ll probably remember him best for his role as Night Owl II in Watchmen.

Wilson delivered a great performance as the second Night Owl. Not only did he convey a sense of mundane self-deprecation but in complete contrast brought some serious action scenes to the film as well. All that and he still found the time for a pretty good love scene with Silk Spectre II (Malin Ackerman). That range of acting should help Wilson craft a worth ally, or adversary, for The A-Team.

The A-Team rides into theaters June 11, 2010.

Check out ‘The A-Team’s’ New Ride

by Bob Starr, Sep 19 2009 // 9:00 AM

The A-Team VanTypically film remakes come with a lot of changes. As new creators step into production roles they have their own vision for the content and make full use of their creative license. This being the case, it’s a refreshing change to see something stay the same. Case in point, the van in the upcoming The A-Team movie.

Photos of the van were taken on set in British Columbia, Canada and it looks great. That is to say, the “new” van is nearly identical to the old van. Even down to the red racing stripe. This gives me hope that director Joe Carnahan (Smokin’ Aces) is preserving at least some of the essence of the original series, while bringing a more mature tone to the once campy show.

I’m taking this a good thing considering some other directors (I could cite names but will refrain) would have certainly changed the iconic van. Fortunately, Carnahan didn’t, which means we’re spared from seeing a pimped out black Hummer with gatling guns and rocket launchers on it. Now that I mention it, that sounds kind of cool but it just isn’t The A-Team. Getting ready to see the van in action next June when The A-Team comes to theaters.

Biel and Copley Join ‘The A-Team’

by Bob Starr, Sep 17 2009 // 7:30 AM

biel-copleyMention the word “reboot” or “remake” to anyone and you’ll probably face a dissatisfied sigh.  Hollywood’s movie recycling program in the last few years has left everyone with reboot/remake fatigue.  However, once in a while a project comes along that peaks collective interest. The upcoming A-Team remake is one such film.

And now, the new A-Team adds two more names to its roster. Jessica Biel (Blade: Trinity, Stealth) will appear as an ex-love interest to Lt. Templeton “Face” Peck, played by Bradley Cooper, while District 9’s Sharlto Copley will be playing H.M. “Howling Mad” Murdoch. While Biel’s involvement is pretty standard fair (Don’t get me wrong, I like her) it’s Copley’s inclusion that is a great casting choice. While a relative unknown, Copley gained a lot of attention with his performance in District 9 (If you haven’t seen it, what are you waiting for?). I anticipate a brilliant performance after seeing D9.

Rounding out the rest of the team is Liam Neeson as Col. John “Hannibal” Smith and Quinton “Rampage” Jackson as B.A. Baracas. Departing from the campy ’80’s TV series, this iteration of the special forces team wrongfully convicted of a crime, will be of a more serious tone. Who knows, maybe some of the bullets will actually hit their mark this time around. Given that Smokin’ Aces’ Joe Carnahan is directing, there’s probably a very good chance a lot of things are going to get shot up in this movie.

The A-Team is set to hit theaters next June.

First Full Trailer for ‘Planet 51′ Goes Online

by Matt Raub, Jul 3 2009 // 10:30 AM

planet51With the rise of alien movies only shadowed by the rise of family CGI-animated films, it only made sense to do yet another family CGI-animated movie about aliens, right? With that said, Planet 51 is a backwards version of conventional alien invasion movies from the 60s, where this time a human astronaut lands on an alien planet, only to be considered a hostile creature, and hilarity insues.

The film stars Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, who doesn’t sound like himself at all. It’s almost as if he’s effecting his voice for the character, which means he must not know how to voice an animated movie (YOU control the character, the character doesn’t control you!). Also along for the ride is Jessica Biel, Justin Long, and Gary Oldman. The film has everything a 6-12 year old will love: screaming, someone falling on their genitals, and a cute robot dog that pees when it’s scared. Check out the trailer after the jump.
