If you love old B-movies, you can’t miss Shout Factory’s line of “Roger Corman’s Cult Classics” DVD collections. Horror, fantasy, science fiction, grindhouse- all are represented in these neat 3- and 4-film multi-packs.
The Vampires, Mummies, and Monsters collection is kind of a B-movie potluck. The four films on two discs created over a span of 17 years have incredibly different looks, tones, and yes, monsters.

If there is one company out there that knows how to capitalize on a good thing, it’s definitely Disney. Now that Lion King 3D has made just under $80 million, and the film itself has made nearly $500 million combining it with the original release from 1994, the studio is ready for lightning to strike twice.
It looks like the films Disney is now looking to bring back range from both their 2D cell animated days to the days of Pixar. The plan is to release one older film and one more recent film a year, bringing us to the end of 2013.
Next to hit theaters is a 3D release of Beauty and the Beast on January 31 of next year, to be followed by Finding Nemo on September 14th, 2012. Then for 2013, you’re looking at Monsters, Inc. on January 18th, and The Little Mermaid on September 13th.
This is surely going to be a cash cow for both Disney and Pixar, and may just be enough to keep them from making big releases like Up or sequels like Toy Story 3 for years, which has been pretty costly in the past.
All we know is that this will give us another chance to enjoy these films with a fresh audience and may even introduce a new generation to these classic films.

Today’s audience loves when things fight. Whether is Jason and Freddy, Aliens and Predators, or Kramers and Kramers. People can’t seem to get enough “fiction on fiction” action. That’s mainly why Spike’s Deadliest Warrior is such an addictive and popular show.
With that in mind, Endlight Entertainment, the fine folks that brought us films like Ninjas Vs. Vampires and Ninjas Vs. Zombies, is bringing us the final film in the Ninjas trilogy: Ninjas Vs. Monsters! Here’s the press release to explain more of this fun project.
In this final installment, the Ninjas and their friends find themselves pitted against the most evil and memorable monsters of them all- Dracula, Frankenstein, the Mummy, the Werewolf, and MORE! Loaded with martial arts action, bloody horror, gun play, magic, comedy, pop-culture references, and a tightly woven twist-filled plot, NINJAS VS MONSTERS looks to be the biggest and best film in the trilogy.

After doing the seemingly impossible and breathing life back into the Batman film franchise after Joel Schumacher had his nipple-loving mitts on it, David Goyer is setting his sights on another failed film franchise to make it cool once again.
It looks like Legendary Pictures has tagged Goyer to help them out of a bind and write the script for their upcoming Godzilla reboot. Here’s the scoop from Deadline.
David Goyer has worked with Thomas Tull’s Legendary Pictures on both Chris Nolan’s Batman trilogy and the new Superman reboot Man Of Steel. Now the in-demand writer will pen the screenplay, from a draft written by David Callaham, for Legendary Pictures’ new version of Godzilla. The project will fall under Legendary’s overall agreement with Warner Bros while Toho Company, which own the rights to the oversized reptile, will distribute the film in Japan.
The film is also set to be directed by Monsters director Gareth Edwards, who managed to make an epic monster adventure with a minimum production budget. Let’s hope that Goyer can help us forget Matthew Broderick, Godzilla eggs, and Puff Daddy’s Led Zeppelin cover.

If you’ve been doing this as long as I have you often see people get work they don’t seem to deserve based on their experience or track record of previous films. In fact, it often seems like people getting directing gigs in Hollywood really have no business directing traffic let alone a big budget studio feature.
But sometimes Hollywood makes the right decision and a person gets a job they are perfectly suited for and will no doubt handle with consummate skill. Case in point is the news today that Monsters writer/director Gareth Edwards has been chosen to take on a new Godzilla incarnation for Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros.
According to the report, the deal is about to close with Edwards directing the film and working with a writer to be named later who will re-write the original scrip by David Callaham. No word yet on what the new Godzilla will contain story-wise but you can be sure story and character will play a large part in the new film, that is if Edward’s previous work is any indication.
You may be able to tell that I’m a fan of Edwards film Monsters, having seen its premiere at SXSW last year and writing one of the first reviews. With the talent and skill he displayed in that film, I have no doubt Godzilla is in very capable hands. Needless to say I will be following this one very closely as it develops.

Indeed it is the time of year when inevitability the lists appear and people pick their favorites of 2010. Some have already done their lists and some, like me, like to wait a bit. That said and since I don’t want to be accused of not following trends, I will also be making a list (or two) of my picks of the best of 2010. However, in the interest of clarity and brevity (or neither), I’m going to pick my top 5 (or so) things in the main categories we cover here at The Flickcast.
Although, as our own John Carle covered the best of 2010 in games so well already, I won’t make much (if any) a list of those and will just mention my two favorites. In case you’re not familiar with those main categories we cover, they are as follows: Movies, TV, Comics, Games, Tech and all things Geek.
So, to that end, here’s my list (or lists really) of my picks of the top stuff of 2010.
Movies
Inception – I love smart movies and this one is pretty damn smart. Featuring great performances, a mind-bending plot and twists galore, director Christopher Nolan delivers with one entertaining ride I was talking about for weeks (and months) afterward. And with all the ways I can get distracted by other things, to still be taking about this movie now is a testament to just how great it is.
True Grit – I love Westerns and this one will go down as truly one of the best I’ve seen in a long time. Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon and the rest of the cast are superb and newcomer Hailee Steinfeld owns the screen. She is definitely one to watch. Plus, the Coen brothers have a genuine love and reverence for the classic Western conventions, even when they twist and turn them into new and even more compelling shapes.
The Social Network – When I first heard of this movie I was skeptical, as probably most were, about how interesting a movie about Facebook really could be. I had nothing to worry about. This brilliant film, directed by David Fincher and written by Aaron Sorkin, delivers on all levels and tells a compelling story of one of the most impressive success stories in history. Along the way it also shows us a little something about the nature of greed, friendship and the real cost of success.
Winter’s Bone - This tale of a real heroes journey to find out what happened to her father before the bank forecloses on her home resonated with me for quite some time after watching this film. Jennifer Lawrence as the young mother and John Hawkes as her meth-snorting uncle really deliver top performances. Part crime movie, part thriller and part coming-of-age-story this film’s stark realism takes you into a world you didn’t know existed and holds you there until the lights come up.

I’ve been a fan of both director Gareth Edwards and his debut film Monsters since seeing it and interviewing him at SXSW earlier this year. The film is terrific and Edwards is definitely a talented writer/director whose star is on the rise.
Obviously, others agree with my assessment as Edwards has recently made a deal for his next project. He will team with Wanted director Timur Bekmambetov on a science fiction film that Edwards is writing and will direct. Bekmambetov will produce the film along with Jim Lemley.
The project is described as “an epic human story, set in a futuristic world without humanity.” Edwards will finish the script and then he and Bekmambetov will reportedly take it out to studios for financing.
With Edwards able to make so much out of Monsters with so little money to work with it will be very interesting to see what he will be able to do with a larger budget. Teaming with Bekmambetov seems like a great idea and I, for one, can’t wait to see what this partnership yields.

Let’s be honest, Hollywood puts out a lot of crap these days. Sure, they do manage to bring out a few interesting or compelling ones but for every Inception, Star Trek or Toy Story 3 you get countless other movies like Twelve, The Last Airbender, Dinner for Schmucks or pretty much anything featuring Nicholas Cage.
Another movie that belongs on the “good” list is Gareth Edwards’ Monsters. I first saw the film at this year’s South by Southwest Film Festival and gave it a very positive review. The film was subsequently picked up for distribution and as a result we’ve started to get promotional materials for it, starting recently with the first trailer.
Now, we’ve also got the first official poster for the film to share with you today. In it, we get a sense of what the film is about and also get a look at the main characters. Having seen the film already, I feel this poster does a good job of capturing the film’s essence. Kudos to the marketing department for putting this together.
Monsters is a very good film worth all the attention it will most certainly get. Check out a larger version of the poster after the jump and be sure to see Monsters when it hit theaters on October 29th.

I’ve been a fan of director Gareth Edward’s film Monsters since I first saw the film during SXSW many months ago. I gave it a positive review and was particularly impressed with Edwards’ ability to craft a story, have interesting characters and have cool monsters all in the same film.
In the months following the film’s debut at SXSW it has picked up a distributor, played at several more festivals and should be coming to you soon enough. To help move that along and get you interested, Magnolia Pictures has released the first trailer for the film out into the wilds of the Internet.
In it you get to see a glimpse of what Edwards’ film has to offer and regardless of the comparisons to something like Cloverfield, Monsters deserves to stand on its own eight feet, er, tentacles. Watch the trailer and then watch the movie when you can. You won’t regret taking the chance.
Check out the trailer after the jump. And keep checking back here for all your Monsters info as I will be keeping track of this one and whatever Edwards does next.
