How Fox Should Handle Their X-Men Universe Post ‘The Avengers’

by Jonathan Weilbaecher, May 22 2012 // 12:00 PM

This is an open letter to anyone at 20th Century Fox, with how I would handle their X-Men Universe in the wake of The Avengers and their successful First Class Pre-Boot-quel-thing.

The X-Men cinematic universe was the first major franchise launched in this modern era of comic book blockbusters. The original X-Men film managed to successfully lay in the groundwork of how these types of films can be a success without losing their comic book soul.

The sequel was a massive leap forward in both action and general cinematic quality. While the other sequels have received mixed reviews, it was clear that despite the reboot happy tendencies of modern hollywood. Fox remained committed to the continuity of the universe they established in 2000.

Just a few weeks ago The Avengers made more money than conceivable in its debut, representing the culmination of a five-year, 6 movie plan. The newly established ‘shared universe’ model demonstrated by Marvel Studios could be a new gold standard for what a studio can do with these types of properties.

So it is with that context that I present my plan for a smaller scale ‘shared X-universe’ that can allow Fox to use it’s already established property in an exciting new way.

Get Your First Look at Marvel’s ‘New Mutants Forever’

by Joe Gillis, Jul 9 2010 // 8:00 AM

Hey comics fans, in honor of new comics coming out this week we’ve got your first look at an upcoming book from our friends at Marvel. This one is called New Mutants Forever and looks to take on some pretty serious subjects.

Written by Chris Claremont and drawn by Al Rio, the story concerns Magneto as he joins the Hellfire Club. Once that happens, the New Mutants have no choice but to ally themselves with the Black Queen, Selene, and as you may guess, lots of meyem ensues.

Picking up where he left off, Claremont teams with series co-creator Bob McLeod, and the legendary Bill Sienkiewicz, to bring fans a series no New Mutants fan can miss. You hear that? You can’t miss this.

Check out the previews for this comic after the jump. Look for New Mutants Forever at your local comic book store on August 4.

The Pull List Comic Reviews: ‘Deadpool’, ‘Cable’, ‘New Mutants’, And More!

by John Carle, May 8 2009 // 8:34 AM

This is part two of this week’s Pull List, check out part one here!

Deadpool #10 – Marvel – $2.99
Score: 8.0

What’s the one way to make an already funny book like Deadpool even more entertaining? Pair him up with an individual who–while may not be as funny–has a more twisted view of the world. That’s what happens in this issue as Norman Osborn decides to send in one of his heavy hitters, Hawkeye a.k.a. Bullseye, to take on the ‘Merc with the Mouth’.  The interesting thing is that Bullseye is pretty funny himself, in a very sick kind of way. The back and forth between the two makes the interaction feel something like the Odd Couple on acid. Surprisingly, Bullseye isn’t present through most of the issue, but instead Daniel Way takes the reader through one of Deadpool’s lowest paying and comical hits before letting the two psychopaths cross… um, paths. What follows are some greatly choreographed and intelligently put together action panels that rival most well done action movies.
