‘Prototype 2′ Gets Digital Comic Series from Dark Horse

by John Carle, Jan 18 2012 // 4:53 PM

It’s no surprise that one of the more anticipated games of 2012 for The Flickcast is Prototype 2. Since getting a peek at San Diego Comic-Con and getting hands on at NYCC, we are counting down to Prototype 2′s April 24th release date. Also looking forward to the release are the folks at Dark Horse Comics. Starting February 15th, Dark Horse will be launching an all digital three part web series focusing on filling in the events of what transpired between the first game and Prototype 2.

The first entry, “The Anchor,” illustrated by Paco Díaz, continues the story of Alex Mercer, the protagonist from the first game, while the second story, “The Survivors,” illustrated by Chris Staggs, follows a small group of residents of New York trying to escape the city after it has been transformed into NYZ with the outbreak of the Blacklight virus. The third and final story, illustrated by Victor Drujiniu, is “The Labyrinth” and provides fans a deeper look into the backstory of PROTOTYPE 2′s new protagonist, Sgt. James Heller.

Check Out the New Developer Diary for ‘Prototype 2: Hunt. Kill. Become’

by John Carle, Dec 19 2011 // 9:00 AM

This summer at San Diego Comic Con, we got a first look at Prototype 2. Then at New York Comic Con, we got hands on with it. But now that we have gotten to check out the basics of the game in action, the developers are letting us take a look at some of the new features of the game including hunting, infiltration and mutations.

Instead of just being given a big bright arrow to follow, players must use a radar system new to the Prototype series for James Heller to track down targets. Once they have found their target, they can either be eliminated or absorbed. If absorbed, the player can then use that person’s security clearance to unlock new missions with mutation rewards for completing them.

These mutations are part of the appeal of the sandbox super powered game. Players don’t swap powers. Instead they get to add more and more powers on top of each other, giving the powers in Prototype 2 an almost Venom-like feel to be able to use tendrils to tear opponents apart or create additional defenses.

Check out the developer diary below and let us know what you think of the new Prototype 2 powers.

NYCC: Hands on at Activision with ‘Prototype 2′ and ‘Goldeneye 007: Reloaded’

by John Carle, Oct 21 2011 // 7:30 AM

New York Comic Con was a huge showcase for the folks at Activision. In addition to the Spider-Man photo booth where people could green screen themselves webslinging through the city, the other side of the Activision booth had part of a full size helicopter people could pose next to. Why a helicopter you ask? Well, remember that question asked about “What is cooler than drop kicking a helicopter?” that was posed for a little game called Prototype? One of the showcase pieces given its first hands on to the public was Prototype 2 on the XBox 360.

During our playthrough we played both a story mission and a challenge mission of the game. Much like the original Prototype, Prototype 2 has impressive visuals and fantastic animation. One thing that quickly stood out though is the change in the field of view.

The player model for James Heller is smaller on the screen which allows players to see furher into the distance, more of what is in front of him and more importantly, more of what is on the side and behind him. This quickly changes up the gameplay as a player can relax a little more without the constant fear from the original of a rocket launcher off screen delivering a killing blow from out of nowhere.

The combat of Prototype 2 seems fairly consistent to the first meaning it is both brutal and fun. This game gives new meaning to collateral damage as players may be aiming at the Blackwatch soldiers but end up tearing through hordes of innocent New Yorkers in the process. Some of the classic powers return as well as updates on the tendrils which in effect turns a target into a magnet for every destructible item close by to come flying at it as seen in the game’s most recent trailer.

One game we are definitely looking forward to playing when it finally hits store shelves is Prototype 2. The first game was a real crowd pleaser at The Flickcast offices and from what we’ve seen of the sequel, it looks to raise the stakes and be even better.

We’ve got a new trailer for the game to share with you today in celebration of Gamescom in Germany. In it, we get a taste of what to expect from the full trailer being released later this week and, more importantly, the “Evolution of Awesome.”

SDCC11: ‘Prototype 2’ Developer Interview & New Trailer

by John Carle, Jul 26 2011 // 7:00 AM

This year, Activision has taken the approach of “go big or go home” at Comic Con with big pushes on four of its upcoming titles set to come out over the next year. Two of these titles, Spider-Man: Edge of Time and X-Men: Destiny both being comic book properties, and the updated Goldeneye: 007 Reloaded are no brainers. The one however that seems to stand out the most is Protoype 2.

Prototype 2 is not what many would consider a traditional sequel. First off, players do not get the opportunity to play the second tale in the Alex Mercer / Blackgate saga as the original game’s protagonist. Instead, Radical has decided to give players the opportunity to take on the role of James Heller, a former soldier whose family has fallen victim to the events of the original Prototype that Mercer has infected with a unique version of the virus that gives him powers of his own and in essence creates a second Prototype.

In our interview below, check out to see what the developers themselves feel about the title’s new protagonist. Also, get a look at the thought process behind new characters being introduced to the game, the new moral compass of the game’s new lead and even gameplay changes such as enemy AI (and the overwhelming nuisance of players being killed by a rocket shot from off screen that they’d have no way to dodge).

Take a look below at both our interview and the first third of the new full trailer for Prototype 2, coming in 2012 to the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

SDCC11: Check Out This Brand New Trailer for ‘Prototype 2′

by Joe Gillis, Jul 21 2011 // 3:00 PM

With all the movie, TV and of course, comic book news during San Diego Comic-Con it’s important to keep in mind that the Con also features a great deal of video game news as well. We’ve already brought you an exclusive interview with Dee Brown of Beenox talking all about the upcoming Spider-Man: Edge of Time game.

Now, we’ve got the brand new trailer for a game I’m personally looking forward to: Prototype 2. Here’s all the scoop about this upcoming game, directly from Activision and Radical Entertainment:

“As the game’s all-new infected protagonist, Sgt. James Heller, players will cut a bloody swathe through the wastelands of post-viral New York Zero (or more simply…NYZ) with unparalleled locomotion, building up a vast genetic arsenal of deadly, biological weapons and abilities as they hunt, kill and consume their way toward the ultimate goal – to kill…Alex…Mercer!”

The game is currently in development for Xbox 360, PlayStation3, and Windows PC. Expect the game in April 2012. Until then, click through to check out the trailer. By doing so you certify you are 18 years of age or older.

E3 2011: New ‘Prototype 2′ Trailer Released

by Chris Ullrich, Jun 6 2011 // 10:00 AM

With E3 being this week you can expect a slew of new trailers, screenshots and major announcements from video game producers, publishers and hardware companies. Among those announcements is Activision’s release of the new trailer for its upcoming title Prototype 2.

In case you’re not familiar with the game, it deals with the exploits of Alex Mercer (voiced by Barry Pepper) who wakes up on a morgue slab with no memory. Alex escapes and sets out to recover his memory and find out exactly what occurred. He soon discovers he now possesses powerful shapeshifting abilities that grant him superhuman strength, speed, agility, durability, weaponry and the ability to “consume” people to gain their memories, skills and appearance.

Alex is forced to track down and consume those related to the conspiracy in order to uncover the truth. During his quest, Alex must face and overcome both the military charged with containing the incident and a horde of infected monsters who’s only thought is killing him. And that, my friends, is the basis for some great action.

Click through to check out all the awesome action in this brand new trailer. Look for Prototype 2 to hit stores sometime in 2012.

Developers Tell You Why Alex Mercer is the Villain in ‘Protoype 2′

by John Carle, Apr 22 2011 // 10:00 AM

That has been the question on the minds of many once they heard Alex would no longer be the star of Prototype 2. Activision and Radical Entertainment sent over a developer interview discussing this change, which can be seen after the jump, and the logic fits.

In Prototype, players spent so much time building up Alex’s power and in doing so reveal the mystery in to how he (SPOILERS) was actually the one who unleashed the virus upon Manhattan and the world. As a result, Alex is now a super powered entity with absolute power corrupting him absolutely.

On the opposite side of Alex, players have James Heller, a man who has lost his family to the virus that Alex unleashed. While his motives remain to be seen, Alex directly infects Heller with his virus which gives him powers much like Alex’s instead of killing him as it did so many others over the course of Prototype.

Also shown in the trailer below is Pre-Alpha gameplay footage. Usually games won’t show footage this early on but what can be seen is impressive. There will obviously be lots of polish put over the game before its 2012 release but things look to be on a strong course with new attacks and powers for Heller to use in his battle against Alex.

Take a peek after the jump at the story of Alex and Heller in Prototype 2 and stick to the Flickcast for more news on it as it becomes available.

‘Prototype 2′ Teaser Trailer Answers One of Life’s Deepest Questions

by John Carle, Feb 28 2011 // 8:30 AM

Penny Arcade is known for their stirring satyrical commentary of the video game and geek world. Back when Prototype was released, they posed the question: “In Prototype, you can do karate kick on a helicopter. What the f**k else do you want?” When we played through the game, we would have been hard pressed to come up with an answer. Now, the good folks at Activision and Radical have found it for us.

Even though it is at least a year away with a 2012 release date, we are keeping a eye out for any information we can get about Prototype 2. This time, without going head to head with Infamous, Prototype 2 will get a chance to shine on its own as the story of the antihero in a world gone mad. We hope the team at Radical is able to take what they learned from the original game and improve upon the success of the franchise.

Take a peek below at the new teaser trailer showing some of the first action from Prototype 2, also plugging the exclusive first look coming to EGM in April. Stick to the Flickcast for more on Prototype 2 as it becomes available.

Activision Reveals ‘Prototype 2′

by Chris Ullrich, Dec 13 2010 // 11:00 AM

Our friends at Activision and Radical Entertainment are back with a sequel to their best-selling game of 2009: Prototype. This new game, currently called Prototype 2, is currently in development and to kick things off we’ve got the first reveal trailer of the game for you today.

“When PROTOTYPE surpassed 2MM units we knew gamers would want a sequel to find out what happens next with Alex Mercer,” said Ken Rosman, Studio Head, Radical Entertainment. “The team here at Radical is sincerely grateful to the fans and we are laser focused on delivering an even bigger and better experience with PROTOTYPE 2!”
