When AMC’s The Walking Dead hit it big last year, we knew that TV studios and management companies would be capitalizing on the trend and pushing as many of their horror TV projects they have to the top of the greenlight list. The true test, however, is whether any of those shows would turn out to be decent.

Ryan Murphy’s American Horror Story has proven that fact with only a handful of episodes, and FX has taken notice as well. The cable network has just announced a second season for the show. THR has the official word from the network.

“It’s one thing to have the ambition and guts to reinvent a genre in a way that makes it captivatingly fresh for a broad audience — it’s something else entirely to have the craft to back that ambition up,” said FX president and GM Jon Landgraf. “Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk have hit the trifecta withNip/Tuck, Glee and now American Horror Story, which will be scaring FX’s viewers to death for many years to come.”

Now that FX has made a name for itself in the world of dramatic TV with Justified, The Shield, and Rescue Me, as well as comedic TV with Louie, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and Archer, it’s time to take on horror with American Horror Story.

Network veteran Ryan Murphy (creator of Nip/Tuck and Glee) is taking to the raunchy cable channel for a bit of the old fashioned bump in the night. Here’s a synopsis for those still in the dark.

American Horror Story revolves around The Harmons, a family of three who move from Boston to Los Angeles as a means to reconcile past anguish. The All Star cast features Dylan McDermott (The Practice) as “Ben Harmon,” a psychiatrist; Connie Britton (Friday Night Lights) as “Vivien Harmon,” Ben’s wife; Taissa Farmiga as “Violet,” the Harmon’s teenage daughter; Jessica Lange (Tootsie, Blue Sky, Grey Gardens) in her first-ever regular series TV role as “Constance,” the Harmon’s neighbor; Evan Peters (One Tree Hill) as “Tate Langdon,” one of Ben’s patients; and Denis O’Hare (The Good Wife) as “Larry Harvey.”

While he’s obviously more of a household name for creating and running 3 years of Fox’s hit high school musical series Glee, before that Ryan Murphy was known as the man who created Nip/Tuck. That series, obviously very different than Glee, was his real masterpiece, bringing 100 episodes of drama, horror, and intrigue.

Now that things look to be settling down for his series on Fox, their raunchier network sister station, FX, has picked up 13 episodes of Murphy and his co-creator Brad Falchuk’s American Horror Story. THR has the scoop on the premise and who we can expect to see on the show:

From 20th Television, the mysterious drama revolves around Ben and Vivien Harmon (The Practice’s Dylan McDermott, Friday Night Lights’ Connie Britton) who move their family from Boston to a haunted San Francisco home in an attempt to rebuild their family after a miscarriage and affair.

Murphy is said to be revising the initial script to increase the role of the nosy neighbor once Jessica Lange (Grey Gardens) signed on to the project in April. Denis O’Hare (True Blood) co-stars as Larry the Burn Guy, a former resident of the haunted estate; with Frances Conroy (Six Feet Under) and Alexandra Breckenridge (Life Unexpected) both playing Moira O’Hara, a housekeeper who has worked at the home for years and appears as a young woman to Ben and an older woman to Vivien.

There is one major rule when it comes to casting a TV series that one plans on continuing past 3 years: stay away from creating “ageless” child characters. In just about every series, that character type seems to be the main downfall of the realism of a series, from LOST to Saved by the Bell.

That’s where Glee showrunner Ryan Murphy has decided to pull some strings. It seems that the decision has been made to not have the show’s stars, Chris Colfer, Lea Michele and Cory Monteith, return for the fourth season. Here’s the breakdown from THR.

Murphy tells THR: “You can keep them on the show for six years and people will criticize you for not being realistic, or you can be really true to life and say when they started the show they were very clearly sophomores and they should graduate at the end of their senior year.”

We all know the effect that Fox’s Glee has had on the nation. It’s brought the high school drama, soap opera, musical, and hour-long comedy together once a week, all while providing the world with a popular soundtrack every few episodes. It seems that Fox realizes what the have in Glee as they have picked up the show for an unprecedented two more seasons.

Before even finishing its first season, the genre-defying, award-winning, underdog comedy GLEE has been picked up through its third season, it was announced today by Peter Rice, Chairman, Entertainment, Fox Networks Group; and Kevin Reilly, President, Entertainment, Fox Broadcasting Company.

“In just one year, GLEE has transcended the television landscape and emerged as a global pop culture phenomenon,” said Rice. “We are incredibly proud to have talent like Ryan Murphy and the GLEE cast in our FOX family, and we can’t wait to see where Ryan takes the show in Seasons Two and Three.”

This news comes as no shock to anyone who has seen Glee take over the lives of so many people, in both the TV and DVD world, as well as iTunes and CD. In the US alone, the first two Glee albums reached nearly 7 million downloads and their most recent album, The Power of Madonna, debuted at number 1, helping them surpass the power group U2 with the most Billboard charting songs of the past 10 years.

In tonight’s episode, entitled “Theatricality”, the gang delves into the world of Lady GaGa, and find out what it takes to become a true star, in every sense of the word. Catch the episode on Fox at 9PM ET/PT.

With the news coming in just last week that Glee was getting renewed on Fox for another season, things have already been heating up for the upcoming episodes. Fox has completed most of the second half of it’s freshman season, which starts up again in April and they are now looking at the fans to be part of a few episodes next season.

According to a recent press release from the network, the show will be holding a nation-wide open casting call for a few parts in the upcoming season.

GLEE has also launched the acting and singing careers of its young, talented cast, and turned them into international sensations. Replicating and expanding on the process used to discover the stars from Season One, the series’ executive producers will begin a nationwide casting search this February to fill three new roles that will be added to the show’s second season.

Building upon the show’s incredibly supportive community of GLEEks and with the hope of bringing fans even closer to the series, auditions will be open to amateur individuals as well as professionals between the ages of 16-26, and all hopefuls will be able to submit auditions online.
