SDCC12 Flashback: WWE Alumni Shad Gaspard Talks ‘Assassin and Son’

by John Carle, Sep 7 2012 // 1:00 PM

As you may have noticed over the past few days we have posted some wrestling interviews from San Diego Comic-Con. This is our final “lost interview” from SDCC. Hope you enjoy!

Most people would know Shad best from his time at WWE as one half of the tag team Cryme Tyme. But this year, Shad wasn’t at Comic Con to promote wrestling. He was there to promote a graphic novel he has been working on called Assassin and Son. He also talks about how it has been a challenge for him breaking into the world of comics coming from a wrestling background. More can be found about Shad’s work on Assassin and Son at his website.

Check out the full interview with Shad from SDCC after the jump.

SDCC12 Flashback: Interview with WWE Diva Layla

by John Carle, Sep 7 2012 // 9:00 AM

As you may have noticed over the past few days we have posted up some interviews from San Diego Comic-Con. We apologize for the delay but we had some video and editing issues that we had to work through and now they’re ready. Hope you enjoy!

Originally starting out in the WWE Diva Search, Layla worked her way through a stint as a member of Extreme Expose on ECW all the way to the Diva Championship. In the process, she became a part of one of the strongest pairings of WWE Divas in recent memory as one half of LayCool with Michelle McCool. This year, Layla made her Comic-Con debut at the Mattel booth. In our interview, Layla speaks to us about her progress with WWE in her six-year run with the company as well as her thoughts on Comic-Con being the pop culture event of the year. And even though we said we won’t hold her to it, we asked her who she cosplay as next year if she comes back to Comic Con next year.

Check out the full interview with Layla from SDCC after the break.

by John Carle, Sep 6 2012 // 1:00 PM

As you noticed yesterday, we will have some interviews with various WWE superstars coming out over the next few weeks from the last San Diego Comic-Con. Hope you enjoy them.

In our interview with Daniel Bryan, he talks about his first Comic-Con experience, shows how busy life on the road can be when he discusses finding out about his own action figures from the fans at the show and the excitement of the WWE being his first action figure being made. Daniel even gives us some insight in to just how popular his simple “Yes, Yes, Yes” catchphrase has gotten.

Check out the full interview with Daniel Bryan from SDCC below and stay tuned for more from The Flickcast.

SDCC 2012 Flashback: Interview with WWE’s Brodus Clay

by John Carle, Sep 5 2012 // 3:00 PM

Hey everyone, we have a few videos coming up over the next few days headed back to San Diego Comic Con with some interviews of various WWE Superstars. We apologize for the delay but we had some video and editing issues that we had to work through on them. Hope you enjoy!

One of the biggest character reinventions of the past year came from Brodus Clay. Originally just a monster who came to the aid of Alberto Del Rio during Del Rio’s war with Edge in 2012, Clay returned to the WWE programming in January of this year as the Funkasaurus Brodus Clay. Wearing a track suit and matching fedora, Brodus danced his way to the ring alongside his two Funkadactyls. Brodus talked to the Flickcast about being a long time comic fan. He also talked about the two sides of himself that come out in the ring during competition.

Check out the full interview with the Funkasaurus Brodus Clay from SDCC below and stay tuned for more from the Flickcast.

SDCC12 Flashback: Interview with WWE’s Zack Ryder

by John Carle, Sep 5 2012 // 1:00 PM

Hey everyone, we have some videos coming up over the next few days that take us back to San Diego Comic-Con for interviews with various WWE Superstars. We apologize for the delay but we had some editing issues that we had to work through. Hope you enjoy!

In addition to movies and comics, action figures have a huge presence at Comic-Con. It is only fitting that WWE would choose to send the Internet Champion Zack Ryder to Comic Con to represent the company at the Mattel booth. On Zack Ryder’s now famous YouTube show as well as his interview on Colt Cabana’s Art of Wrestling Podcast, it has become public knowledge that Ryder is an action figure fanatic.

We got to talk to Ryder about his love of figures as well as his hopes for WrestleMania 29, set in his own backyard in New Jersey. Zack even gives us some insight into his thoughts on the Jersey Shore.

Check out the full interview with Long Island Iced Z Zack Ryder from SDCC below and stay tuned for more from The Flickcast.

SDCC12 XTRA: Hands On the Wii U’s ‘NintendoLand’

by John Carle, Jul 19 2012 // 10:45 AM

At Comic Con, The Flickcast team got to finally get our hands on the Wii U and Nintendo’s minigame packed NintendoLand. Like we talked about in our E3 coverage, NintendoLand will feature a collection of mini games inspired by Nintendo franchises, past and present. In total, NintendoLand will contain 12 mini games with half of them already announced and five were playable for us in the Nintendo lounge at SDCC.

First we got to try out Animal Crossing: Sweet Day. Inspired by the stuffed animal-like art design of Animal Crossing, this mini game puts three players on a map where they must collect candies that are placed in various locations, sometimes requiring multiple players to stand on a location together to release the candies. The more candies the players collect, the fatter their heads get and the slower they move. At the same time, they are being pursued by a fourth player who is controlling two guards using the Wii U controller, independently controlling each guard with the different analog sticks and using the controller’s screen.

Communication is key between the players in their hunt for the candy as they need to warn each other about oncoming threats and gather at certain locations to unleash the larger stashes of candy. The player using the Wii U controller gets to really have the most fun though as they get to chase and troll the other players by using pincher style attacks to corner them.

SDCC12 XTRA: Hands On with Capcom

by John Carle, Jul 18 2012 // 7:30 AM

At Comic Con, Capcom took the time to let us check out some of their newest titles coming out over the next year. During our time at the Capcom booth we got hands on with Resident Evil 6, the rebooted DMC and the next installment to the Lost Planet franchise.

For Resident Evil 6, we were treated to extended versions of the demo currently available to those who purchased Dragon’s Dogma. In the campaigns we got to play, the action was fast and furious but there was also that intensity often found in Resident Evil games where every bullet needs to count. In addition to deranged people with firearms of their own there were creatures that would assault us with a blast of spikes that would knock you off your feet, leaving you open to further attack.

Also, check out the newest Resident Evil 6 trailer after the jump. Don’t forget that Resident Evil 6 hits the XBox 360 and PlayStation 3 on October 2nd, 2012.

SDCC12: The Flickcast’s Comic Con Photo Gallery

by John Carle, Jul 17 2012 // 7:00 AM

Comic-Con is the Mecca of pop culture. People from every facet of the entertainment industry are there and for good reason. If a movie is going to be huge in 2012, it started at Comic Con 2011 (or even sooner). Even television shows that have nothing to do with “geek culture” can be found at the Con.

But of course at Comic-Con, everyone is able to let out their inner geek. Whether it’s a t-shirt that proudly proclaims “Nerd” to the world or a twenty-five piece, thousand dollar Iron Man costume with light-up chest piece, everyone is able to let their geek flag fly.

The hardest part of Comic-Con is it is impossible to see everything, whether or not you are on the show floor or trying to follow it from home. We hope that this photo gallery can help fill in some of those spots of the Con that you missed out on. Check it out and share it with your friends and hopefully see you there next year.

SDCC12: Marvel Could Make ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Official Today

by John Carle, Jul 14 2012 // 11:26 AM

Star Lord. Groot. Drax. Rocket Raccoon. Since the huge success of the Avengers including the post-credit reveal of the big bad behind everything, there have been rumblings about the Guardians of the Galaxy making their way to the big screen. Last night during the Marvel party, lots of discussion was overheard that let the cat out of the bag that Marvel’s cosmic crusaders will be officially revealed today.

Though details like who will be taking on these roles are shrouded in secrecy, it is still exciting to see Marvel give the Guardians of the Galaxy their own feature film. Especially with Marvel putting their cosmic franchises like the Guardians and the Annihilators on hiatus and other powerhouses like Nova MIA.

Stick to The Flickcast for more on Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy from San Diego Comic-Con 2012.

SDCC12: Neil Gaiman Returning to ‘Sandman’

by Joe Gillis, Jul 13 2012 // 9:30 AM

At least with this rather surprising news it’s not a case of another creative team making a prequel to a classic graphic novel. Before Watchmen, we’re looking at you.

This time at least the guy who started it all is back and ready to tell another part of the story. To what story am I referring? Well, as you might have heard, celebrated author Neil Gaiman has decided to return to the world he made famous and tell a new part of The Sandman story.

That’s right, Gaiman will collaborate with artist J.H. Williams III on a new limited series based on his classic graphic novel The Sandman for Vertigo. Gaiman made the announcement via video during the Vertigo panel at Comic-Con on Thursday.

In the video address, Gaiman said “there was one tale still untold” for The Sandman and with Sandman‘s 25th anniversary coming up, he felt the time was right to revisit it and tell this new story.

The title of the series will be announced later, but look for it to debut sometime in 2013 and be available da-and-date digitally.

SDCC12: First Trailer for ‘OZ The Great and Powerful’ with James Franco and Milla Kunis Arrives

by Chris Ullrich, Jul 13 2012 // 7:00 AM

If you’re one of the people who’s always wished for a prequel to The Wizard of Oz, your wish has been granted. That’s right, Disney has gone ahead and made said prequel and its called Oz the Great and Powerful. It stars James Franco and Milla Kunis and is directed by Sam Raimi.

The first trailer for the film screened at Comic-Con in San Diego on Thursday and we’ve got it for you right here, just in case you weren’t able to make it to the Con this year. No need to thank us. It’s what we do.

Disney also screened a trailer for The Lone Ranger, which we’ll get for you just as soon as we can. Meantime, this trailer gives us a good idea what we can from the movie which tells the story of how the Wizard (Franco) first arrived in Oz and became its ruler.

Look for Oz the Great and Powerful to hit theaters on March 8 of 2013. Check out the trailer after the break.

SDCC 2012: Activision to Release ‘The Walking Dead’ Game Based of the AMC Series

by John Carle, Jul 12 2012 // 9:00 AM

The Walking Dead has proven itself to be a valuable franchise in comics (just hitting its 100th issue), on TV (being the top rated program on the AMC network) and in games (with Telltale’s adventure game being considered one of the top downloadable titles so far this year). It is no surprise that someone else would try to get their hands on it and leverage the property further.

While Telltale’s The Walking Dead revolves around the comic world, the AMC television series has its own separate continuity. While the two revolve around the same basic concept, the stories have already drastically diverged. It only makes sense that someone would want to further expand on this second continuity, especially with some of the intriguing characters introduced to it that never appeared in the comics.

Along with developer Terminal Reality, Activision will be publishing The Walking Dead in 2013. Terminal Reality most notably worked on the recent Star Wars Kinect and was also working on Demonick, the title being shown in development of Happy Madison’s Grandma’s Boy.

SDCC12: ‘Firefly’ Getting Reunion TV Special, Filming at Comic-Con

by Joe Gillis, Jul 11 2012 // 2:00 PM

Hey, nobody would be happier than we would if Firefly came back to TV. Or, if they did another movie sequel or prequel to Serenity. Sadly, even though Josss Whedon is a huge success with Avengers, we don’t think either of those is a real possibility.

However, that isn’t stopping Science Channel, which runs the original Firefly series pretty much every day, from doing a new TV special about the show. That’s right, to celebrate the cult-classic’s 10th anniversary, the channel is shooting said one-hour special, called Browncoats Unite, at the the Firefly cast reunion at Comic-Con this week.

“Firefly is a landmark work of science fiction and a favorite with our viewers,” said Debbie Myers, general manager and executive vp of Science. “Ever since it premiered on Science, fans have asked us to do something special to mark its 10-year anniversary. With this signature celebration, punctuated by Browncoats Unite, we will connect the minds behind this classic franchise with its legions of passionate fans.”

Joss Whedon and Nathan Fillion are expected to appear on Friday’s panel. In addition, Alan Tudyk, Summer Glau, Adam Baldwin, Sean Maher and writer Tim Minear are also expected. Browncoats Unite will air on Science, along with an all-day marathon of Firefly episodes, on Sunday, Nov. 11.

SDCC12: Activision Announces Full Comic-Con Slate of Events

by Chris Ullrich, Jul 11 2012 // 1:30 PM

Say what you will about Comic-Con becoming more commercial and getting away from its comic book roots, but other types of entertainment are going to be there this year (as they were in years past) and they don’t look to be going anywhere. It’s just a fact everyone needs to get used to.

One of the things Comic-Con attendees need to get used to is the presence of video game companies at the event. To be perfectly honest, we love video games and have no problem with them being at Comic-Con — especially if they come from our friends at Activision.

The company has announced a whole slew of events taking place during the Con and we’ve got all the info for you right here. So, to get you ready for all the action, read on for the official press release. And yes, we realize they don’t specifically mention Call of Duty: Black Ops II below but we love the game, so we put up the pic. Deal with it.

Activision Publishing To Showcase Blockbuster Slate Of Fan-Favorite Video Games At San Diego Comic-Con 2012

Showgoers Will Get Their First Multiplayer Hands-On Opportunity with the Highly Anticipated TRANSFORMERS™: FALL OF CYBERTRON, Celebrate Spidey’s Latest Movie Launch with Hands-On Time with The Amazing Spider-Man™, Plus a Surprise Game Reveal During the Marvel Games Panel, Exclusive Game Demos at the Activision Booth, and Much, MUCH More…

SDCC12 Preview: The Flickcast vs. ‘The Walking Dead’

by John Carle, Jun 25 2012 // 9:15 AM

The world we know is about to end. An epidemic of apocalyptic proportions will sweep the globe causing the dead to rise and feed on the living. The only way to survive is to buy an Evac Pass, track the virus and get out before it is too late.

In a matter of months society will crumble and San Diego will be first of many cities to fall. Only a few will escape. Some won’t even try.

That’s what will be going down at San Diego Comic-Con at Petco Park. Somehow the dead have started walking and our path is blocked (probably by Con traffic) and it looks like our only way out is to run through an infected zone. How else are we going to get to all the good after parties at the Hard Rock?

Well The Flickcast is up for the challenge. If there was a group of geeks that could survive a Comic Con zombie apocalypse it’s The Flickcast team. Granted Matt might trip me to save himself or even use me as a weapon, we guarantee some member of the team will make it through.
