by Joe Gillis, Oct 8 2010 // 3:00 PM

Welcome to this week’s On the Radar where we delve into all corners of the entertainment, tech and geek Internets for news, views and whatnot that may have escaped our regular coverage this week. Let is know if we missed something interesting. Otherwise, on to the links!

• Though it may not really have a reason to visit, the Green Lantern film site has gone live.

• In an effort to bring you some of the best trailer mash-ups of the week, here’s a brief rundown:

• Tron abides. The TRON Lebowski

• Three’s Company meets The Shining

• A joke? Sure, probably in there somewhere. Pee Wee meets The Hulk

• I vote for the one that takes place in space. Star Trek Vs. Star Wars: The Trailer

• You have to go deeper. Inception 1950′s Trailer

The Flickcast’s ‘On The Radar’

by Bob Starr, Sep 24 2010 // 4:00 PM

Welcome to this week’s On the Radar where we delve into all corners of the entertainment, tech and geek Internets for news, views and whatnot that may have escaped our regular coverage this week. Let is know if we missed something interesting. Otherwise, on to the links!

• You asked for it, (or maybe you didn’t). Either way, here’s the list of the Top 10 Most Ridiculous Character-Branded Products.

• If you find yourself asking if a poster would be too nerdy to put in your room…Chances are you probably know the answer.

• If you caught last night’s Community, then you’re most definitely going to want to go back and read the Twittersodes leading up to the airing. Trust us.

• In prepping for his epically animated Owl Fighting movie, Zack Snyder admits that he had people dress up in owl suits to choreograph the fight scenes.

• Katy Perry recorded a spoof of her song and sang it alongside Elmo on Sesame Street. The song was immediately pulled from the episode before airing. What’s the world coming to when a girl can’t sing about kissing other girls on a show with Muppets?

• A student dressed like The Hulk smashed a car and is now getting in trouble for it. The real crime? The fact that there wasn’t a camera rolling the entire time.

Mark Ruffalo To Be The New Hulk In ‘The Avengers’

by Shannon Hood, Jul 24 2010 // 2:30 PM

We sat on this news yesterday (and even speculated about it previously), because it did not appear to be confirmed, but several outlets are now reporting that Mark Ruffalo is confirmed as the new Hulk.  The beloved Marvel character experienced a setback when it was announced that Edward Norton would no longer be playing the character.

This week has been filled with lots of conjecture over who would reprise the role. Late yesterday, it was announced that Mark Ruffalo would take over the role. Ruffalo has been a strong character actor in Shutter Island, You Can Count On Me, Blindness, and Zodiac.

He will  be playing the role for the upcoming Avengers movie, featuring Chris Evans as Captain America, Robert Downey Jr. as Ironman, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, and Don Cheadle as War Machine.

The Avengers is scheduled for May 2012.

Edward Norton Responds to Being Replaced as ‘The Hulk’

by Chris Ullrich, Jul 13 2010 // 7:00 AM

Early yesterday we reported that Marvel Studios had decided to replace actor Edward Norton as Bruce Banner/The Hulk in any future movies where the character appears. At that time Norton’s agent responded, as they often do, and we never expected Norton himself to offer any kind of opinion — at least in public.

Well, we were wrong about that last bit as Norton has already responded to his replacement via his official Facebook page. In the response, Norton thanked his fans for their support but doesn’t offer any further details on why he won’t be coming back.

It is clear from his message that he isn’t exactly happy about the situation but is dealing with it as best he can. His final comment that “Hulk is bigger than us all” seems to indicate he will, reluctantly, put the role behind him.

Click through for Norton’s complete statement. Now that Norton is out, who should take on the role of Bruce banner/The Hulk? How about the rumored Joaquin Phoenix? Sound off in the comments.

The Skrulls Could Be the ‘Big Bad’ in Joss Whedon’s ‘The Avengers’

by Matt Raub, May 20 2010 // 11:00 AM

While this is definitely a cool idea, it should be noted that this piece of news is most definitely a rumor as of now and should be treated as such.

With all eyes still on Jon Favreau’s Iron Man 2 as it continues to make money at the worldwide box office, most Marvel fans are already ready for more from the cinematic universe. We’ve got Thor on the way next and then Joe Johnston’s Captain America. But after that, everything leads to Joss Whedon’s The Avengers in 2012.

We’ve heard we’ll see just about every Marvel character in The Avengers the company currently has the film rights to including The Hulk, Thor, Cap, Iron Man, Ant Man, and Hawkeye. Now we’re getting word that the main villains of the film could be the alien race The Skrulls.

The highlight of this insider scoop (DISCLAIMER: which has not been confirmed by the studio itself) is that the shape-changing alien race the Skrulls are being used as the main antagonists for The Avengers. Not only that, but the Skrulls will ‘brainwash’ and use the Hulk in a similar fashion Loki did in the comics.

Don’t expect a full on alien invasion, though; that will have to wait for a sequel. The Skrulls’ role will be largely clandestine, similar to the way S.H.I.E.L.D. operates.

Get Ready For A New Wave of Superhero Porn

by Matt Raub, May 12 2010 // 1:00 PM

For years, members of both genders have cowered in the shadows with their secret interest in what goes on behind the closed doors of Clark Kent’s apartment, or on the wedding night of Spider-Man and Mary Jane. Kevin Smith even built a career on the former. Now, fans everywhere will get to witness as the two worlds of Porn and Comic Books cross over.

With the rise in comic book popularity, there also comes the realization from the adult industry (finally) that there is a market for this type of movie. Using the protection of the “parody law”, stating that anything deemed a parody can not be considered an infringement on copyright, industry leader Vivid Entertainment recently announced their newest Superhero imprint.

“The parodies under this new imprint will pay tribute to the world’s most popular comic heroes,” said Steven Hirsch, Founder/Co-chairman of Vivid. “Axel already started pre-production on a parody of Superman, which will be followed by those of The Green Hornet, Spider-Man, Wonder Woman, Captain America, Thor, and The Incredible Hulk.

We made the decision to create the imprint after working with Axel on “Batman XXX: A Porn Parody”, an Axel Braun Productions movie to be distributed by Vivid. Axel truly did an amazing job with it, and we agreed that together we could mine the really rich treasure of superheroes and have a lot of fun doing it.”

Captain America and Thor Cameo Confirmed in ‘Iron Man 2′?

by Matt Raub, Apr 26 2010 // 11:00 AM

Much like the weeks leading up to the release of the first Iron Man film, fanboys and fangirls are taking to the Internets with loads of rumors and speculation on what we can expect to see in the upcoming sequel. Of course, there are all manner of possibilities including things as outrageous as a scene in which The Hulk shows up, as well as a few things like “names on a dossier” which may give clues on the makeup of The Avengers.

It looks like we may be getting some confirmation on what to expect in two weeks. One of the major expectations is what the “easter egg” in this film will be.

We all remember the post-credits sequence with Sam Jackson as Nick Fury (and how much craze that started in the fan community).

Now, we’re getting word that there is yet another scene after the credits, and this one is a doozie. From the Italian site badtaste.it:

“A 100% trusted source (NOT from the production/distribution, but very familiar with the movie) confirmed us today that there will be an easter egg in IM2. It’s an extra scene, just like the one in the first movie, after the end credits.

We are able to tell you what’s about! It’s a scene about… Captain America and Thor! Maybe this doesn’t seem a big reveal, but it’s nice to have a confirmation.”

First Trailer for ‘Marvel vs. Capcom 3′ Hits the ‘Net

by John Carle, Apr 21 2010 // 12:00 PM

When it originally hit arcades, Marvel vs. Capcom 2: A New Age of Heroes dominated the coin-op world. It continued success on consoles and made a return last summer as an XBLA and PlayStation Network title. Nine years after its original release and with a $15 price tag, it still was one of the most popular releases of 2009.

Yesterday, Capcom announced Marvel vs. Capcom 3: The Fate of Two Worlds and released it’s first trailer to the world. With what looks like the visual stylings of Street Fighter 4′s, Marvel vs. Capcom 3 still has a lot of questions left on the table. Will it still be a tag system in combat? Who is the full cast of the game? And what is this “Fate of Two Worlds” story they look to be pushing? Capcom’s official press release told us:

It’s been a decade since Marvel vs. Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes was first released and now the most popular Marvel and Capcom characters join forces again in a re-envisioned team fighting game for a new generation. Fill the shoes of legendary characters from the most beloved franchises in entertainment as you battle in the first VS. Fighting game powered by Capcom’s MT Framework.

As you can tell, we are already excited for this release since we have been waiting for it for years. The game will be released for PS3 and XBox 360 in the Spring of 2011. In the meantime, check out the first trailer after the jump.

Marvel’s ‘Super Hero Squad’ Heads for Primetime

by Sebastian Suchecki, Nov 9 2009 // 12:15 PM

marvel-super-hero-squadFor many people, comics are thought of as something for kids. Although I know many adults who read comics and titles seem to be geared more towards adults these days, its nice to see that a company hasn’t forgotten that kids do make up a portion of their audience.

Case in point is Marvel’s Super Hero Squad TV program, which is now moving to a primitime gig on Cartoon Network. Here’s all the latest info from the official press release.

On Saturday morning, September 19th, The Super Hero Squad Show burst onto television screens across the nation on Cartoon Network to rave reviews and a huge audience. It instantly became the Network’s #1 show for Boys 6-8 and has continued its heroic growth in that demographic, increasing that audience by nearly 30%.

Thanks to the tremendous success the show has seen on Saturday mornings, the greatest Super Heroes in the Marvel Universe are ready to make the leap to primetime! Starting this past Saturday, November 7th, The Super Hero Squad Show made its heroic debut on Saturday nights at 7:30PM as part of Cartoon Network’s incredible prime time line-up.
