As described on their site Penney Design, video games based on movie franchises can be seen going as far back as E.T. (which supposedly has a warehouse dedicated to housing all the unsold copies of the ill received game). While Hollywood and the video game industry have attempted to merge with video game to movie tie-ins like Street Fighter or Super Mario Bros., the real moneymakers come from frequently rushed movie games which attempt to stretch out plots of a two hour movie over a ten hour game, usually to dismal results.

Taking all this knowledge and cynicism to heart, Penney Design has crafted some custom video game box art if recently released properties like Avatar had been released in the Atari 2600 era. Take a look below at some of the stylized designs which, though simplistic, do a great job of capturing the essence of the properties they pay homage too.

Also, take the time to appreciate the subtle nuances to the works like the “Instructions missing” from the Cloverfield box or the fact that they think anyone would ever pay $4.00 for a The Fast & The Furious: Tokyo Drift game on any generation console.

Due to last week’s craziness of San Diego Comic-Con, we regretfully weren’t able to bring you a Weblink Wednesday or Fan Film Friday. Since we’re all about fairness here at The Flickcast, we have decided to give you the best of both worlds this week with The Legend of Neil.

Created by the same team who brought us The Guild, The Legend of Neil is a web series about a regular underachiever, Neil Grimsley, who gets transformed into the world of Zelda and has to fight off all kinds of things from orcs to skeletons to gay dragons, all while pissed off and confused. The series is strictly a comedy for gamers, especially those who’ve spent many hours playing Legend of Zelda. The show has a few fun cameos along the way, including legendary fangirl and star of The Guild, Felicia Day.

Originally created as an independent series by Effin Funny, the show was later picked up by Atom Films, which had a syndication deal with Comedy Central. This means that Comedy Central owns syndication rights to Neil and may decide to change the medium to TV in the future (though there are no formal plans). Season two just kicked off on Monday, and you can check out the premier right after the jump. Be warned, the series is funny, but also NSFW.

Of the people across the world who go to movies on a regular basis, there is a smaller portion of the population that likes to do, what some people call “movie hopping” where you set aside a day and see several movies you were hoping to see. The site, which is pretty simple in mechanics, works like this: you type in your zip code and a movie you’re hoping to see, The DFF then gives you a list of theaters to choose from. From there you can see when your movie is playing, click on “find double feature” and information pops up on what movies are playing right after. It makes planning out your day immensely easy, and helps you see another movie if you have time.

When you go to see a movie and the whiny-yet-lovable main character switches between a green shirt and a red shirt in the middle of a scene, it can drive you mad. You saw it, but none of the other people in the theater did. Thankfully MovieMistakes.com was created to keep your sanity intact by showing you that folks like McG and Ron Howard aren’t perfect.

With the number of GPS owners in the country growing at a substantial rate, more and more people are trying to do cool things with their navigational devices, from downloading custom avatars to now custom turn-by-turn voices and points of interest.

P.I.G.Tones, The Politically Incorrect GPS, is, according to their website, “a software company that offers Garmin and Tom Tom users the ability to download cool, funny, and irreverent new voices to their devices, replacing the boring standard voices that come with the units.”

Voices range from Stewie and Peter from Family Guy, to “The Governator”, Sean Connery, Homer, Cartman, and a slew of hilarious others. Granted, these aren’t licensed, which means you won’t get Seth McFarlane doing the official voices of Stewie or Peter, but the impression is pretty spot-on.
