Say what you will about movies like Aftershock, at least they try to be entertaining and don’t take themselves too seriously. And that should count for something.
In case you missed the trailer for Aftershock we posted recently, and haven’t seen the movie yet, it tells the “What if? story of a big earthquake hitting a major city. In this scenario people begin to degenerate into a horde of brutal savages ready to kill each other for a chance at survival.
Really, that sounds like pretty much any day on the freeways of LA, but what are you gonna do, right? Anyway, the folks who made Aftershock have released a nice making of featurette that takes us behind the scenes of the filmmaking process and gives us a glimpse of how thing all came together.
Check that out after the break. And don’t forget to watch Aftershock in theaters now.

When a big earthquake hits a major city, it would be nice to think that people would rise to the occasion and try to help each other. Not in Eli Roth’s new movie Aftershock, however.
In his version of events, when a big earthquake hits Chile, people degenerate into savages and they basically try to kill each other. And they just don’t try to kill each other, they try to do it in the most bloody and violent way possible.
To give you a taste of what we’re talking about, a new trailer for Eli Roth’s Aftershock has dropped. In it, the scenario we just described unfolds and things do not go well for pretty much everyone involved.
However, that doesn’t mean that this doesn’t look kinda fun. Sure, it’s pretty much over-the-top bloody and violent, but we all know that’s just for show and not real.
It’s just a movie after all. Try not to take it too seriously. Dimension Films and Radius-TWC are set to release Aftershock on May 10.
Check out the very NSFW redband trailer after the break.

As sequels go, making one for a movie called “The Last” something seems kinda like a bit of the old bait and switch. But really who are we to judge, right? Anyway, that’s just what CBS Films has done (made a sequel, that is) for the movie The Last Exorcism.
The new one, featuring the clever title The Last Exorcism 2, has a new trailer that’s just been released. In it, we see the movie basically picks up where the first one left off and features Ashley Bell back again as the girl tormented by a bit of a demon problem.
Check out the trailer after the break. And yes, it’s not teriffic, per se. It does have something though and we kinda liked it. Perhaps we’re just very, very tired.
Look for the movie to arrive on March 1.

Netflix has secured another original series with Hemlock Grove, a thrilling tale of murder and mystery adapted by Eli Roth (Hostel, Cabin Fever), is set to star Famke Janssen (X-Men, Nip/Tuck) and Bill Skarsgard (Anna Karenina, Simon and the Oaks). The series is set to be available for Netflix members to watch instantly, beginning early in 2013.
Set in a ravaged Pennsylvania steel town, Hemlock Grove starts with the body of a young girl, mangled and murdered in the shadow of the former Godfrey steel mill. There are a multitude of suspects from an escapee from the White Tower, a biotech facility owned by the former steel magnates, to a 17-year-old Gypsy kid named Peter from the wrong side of the tracks, who tells his classmates he’s a werewolf.

Once upon a time, the state of cinemas was a gritty, hilarious, violent place filled with guns, big boobs, and every kind of animal wanting to kill and/or eat your flesh. These days, everything is dumbed down to the least common denominator, but with an homage to some of those classic film genres.
Now, you can get to see exactly what that world was like with a brand new documentary delving into the eclectic mind of cinematic legend Roger Corman in Corman’s World: Exploits of a Hollywood Rebel. Here’s the premise.
CORMAN’S WORLD: EXPLOITS OF A HOLLYWOOD REBEL is a tantalizing and star-studded tribute to Roger Corman, Hollywood’s most prolific writer-director producer, and seminal influencing force in modern moviemaking over the last 60 years. Featuring interviews with Hollywood icons and cinematic luminaries, some who launched their careers within Corman’s unforgettable world of filmmaking, including Paul W.S. Anderson, Peter Bogdanovich, Robert De Niro, Peter Fonda, Pam Grier, Ron Howard, Eli Roth, Martin Scorsese, William Shatner and Jack Nicholson, along with many others, this documentary chronicles how Corman created his cult film empire, one low-budget success at a time, capitalizing on undiscovered talent, and pushing the boundaries of independent filmmaking.
The film is set to hit select theaters on December 16th, but you can check out the very first trailer for it after the jump.

It may have taken a back seat since the Saw franchise ended, but the “torture porn” genre, which is an offshoot of the gore exploitation genre, sure hasn’t faded in popularity. That is evident in the fact that Elo Roth’s Hostel franchise is continuing on without him in Hostel 3.
It may be going straight to DVD, but that only means you’ll be getting much more gore and raunchy content that made Roth’s original films so controversial in theaters. Here’s the synopsis for the newest film.
High stakes gambling takes on a sinister new meaning in this third chapter of the terrifying HOSTEL series. While attending a bachelor party in Las Vegas, four friends are enticed by two sexy escorts to join them at a private party way off the Strip. Once there, they are horrified to find themselves the subjects of a perverse game of torture, where members of the Elite Hunting Club are hosting the most sadistic show in town.
The film, directed by Scott Spiegel (From Dusk til Dawn 2) and written by Michael D. Weiss (The Butterfly Effect 2), is set to hit Blu-Ray and DVD on December 27th. Check out the new trailer after the jump.

I pretty much watch any horror movie I can get my hands on, and have been doing so for most of my adult life. I can only recall a handful of movies that genuinely scared me. Add this one to the list.
For three-fourths of the running time of the film I was literally biting my knuckles like a little kid. The movie scared me, pure and simple, and it is rated PG-13!
Whether you find the movie scary or not likely hinges on whether you find the subject matter convincing. If you don’t believe that demonic possessions are possible, I doubt you will like the movie, and will probably find it silly. However, if you believe that this really could happen, The Last Exorcism will scare you to death.
The movie begins with a documentary crew interviewing a minister named Cotton Marcus (Patrick Fabian.) Cotton has been groomed since childhood to be an evangelist, following in his father’s footsteps.
He has gained notoriety with his effusive showmanship. He frequently employs magic tricks and props to whip the congregation into a spiritual frenzy.
His convincing delivery and tendency to employ theatrics make him a natural to perform “exorcisms.” After years of jilting desperate people out of their hard earned cash, he has decided to quit performing exorcisms, and has agreed to take the documentary crew on one last exorcism, to expose the fakery involved in the profession.

In 2007, Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez brought us Grindhouse, a gritty, blood-soaked double feature that tipped its hat to the low budget exploitation movies that played during the 1970’s. The film featured some really fun trailers for fake movies. Rob Zombie, Eli Roth, Edgar Wright, and Rodriquez were each responsible for one of the trailers.
The trailers were such a huge hit with fans that one of them has been turned into a movie. Machete (directed by Robert Rodriguez) hits theaters on September 3rd.
Now comes word that Eli Roth’s trailer for Thanksgiving will be made into a full length feature film. Roth confirmed the news with Cinema Blend, and said that the movie is in the beginning stages.
The Thanksgiving trailer features the town of Plymouth, Massachusetts celebrating the holiday while a serial killer dressed as a Pilgrim goes on a decapitation spree. It is deliciously gruesome and the voice over narration is to die for (pun intended.) This year, there will be no leftovers!
Roth has recruited friend Jeff Rendell to help pen the movie. Rendell appears in the trailer as the deranged Pilgrim. The two hope to write the story as soon as Roth finishes doing publicity for The Last Exorcism, which he produced. That film will be released this Friday, August 27.
Check out the trailer for Thanksgiving after the jump. Warning: very NSFW.

On some occasions, writing a review of a film is somewhat difficult. How do you effectively communicate the intricacies of the plot or characters and how to you genuinely summarize the effect the film has on you so potential viewers reading your review can fully understand and know what they are getting into if they do attend? Fortunately, in the case of Piranha 3D, I had none of those problems.
After all, it is a film about an underwater quake which sets free hundreds of prehistoric man-eating fish who then proceed to attack and eat pretty much anything and everything they can sink their teeth into. Once the fish are loose and on their way to spoil Spring Break for the thousands of kids frolicking at Lake Victoria, AZ it’s up to an unlikely group led by the town’s Sheriff (Elisabeth Shue) and a visiting marine paleontologist (Adam Scott) to stop the deadly horde before it’s too late.
Having recently seen Joe Dante’s original Piranha and another classic Roger Corman gory campfest Humanoids from the Deep, I can say that Piranha 3D borrows heavily from both of those previous films and does deliver a campy, over the top and in your face good time. It’s not art, whatever you may consider that to be, but it does have one big thing going for it: It’s fun.
Piranha 3D doesn’t try to be anything more than what it is: a movie where a pack of fish attack a whole bunch of people and eat them which also features ample sexual situations and nudity. It definitely earns the R rating.
It starts out letting you know these fish are not to be messed with by presenting Richard Dreyfuss doing what can only be described as a parody of his character from Jaws (complete with his rendition of Irving King’s Show Me the Way to Go Home) innocently fishing on the lake.

We’re all pretty big fans of the horror genre here in The Flickcast. We’ve had many a heated debate about the popularity of Paranormal Activity and lack of popularity of Cloverfield. Basically, the new concept of “first-person horrors” has us intrigued, along with the rest of the country. In picking up on that trend, producer Eli Roth has released the first trailer for his newest film, The Last Exorcism.
The film follows in the trend of a Cloverfiled or Paranormal in the sense that it’s a documentary (mockumentary?) about uncovering some mysterious things that took place to a family in the Midwest. Things get even weirder when the documentarian comes to discover that the daughter of the family is actually possessed.
There are some neat horror devices that we can see in the trailer, some interesting first-person camera tricks, but it looks like it could be an entertaining film, to say the least. Between the poster and the first promotional image we got, the filmmaker seems to be smitten with the shot of actress Ashley Bell bent over backwards.
With this technique turning plenty of heads in Hollywood, it’s possible that we can see more and more genres adopting this style for use on a spec script (see something like District 9).
Check out the trailer after the jump (preferably with the lights on) and be sure to keep an eye out for The Last Exorcism when it hits theaters on August 27th.
