by The Flickcast, Feb 22 2021 // 11:03 AM
It’s time for another new episode of The Flickcast. The pop culture podcast about stuff nerds love. This week it’s Episode 425: Living In a Society.
On the episode Chris and Joe are back on their bullshit and discussing a bunch of new topics. Some of these include the recent crisis in Texas, the latest episode of WandaVision, the new trailer for Zack Snyder’s Justice League, the reboot of Mortal Kombat, the great South Korean sci-fi epic Space Sweepers, DC’s “adult” version of Titans, proper measurements of things, living in a society (of course) and a whole lot more.
They also manages to veer off-topic a few times, as happens with these two. So expect those tangents you know and love. Other than that, this episode is a bit shorter than the last few (thank goodness) but still manages to punch you right in the earholes.
Also, no formal picks this week except Chris’ reminder to watch and enjoy Space Sweepers. Oh, one more thing. Two more, really. If you get a moment and feel like it/can do it, consider rating or reviewing the show on Apple Podcasts and supporting the show on Patreon.
Thanks for listening!

In a bid to compete with devices like the Google Chromecast, Roku and mainly the Apple TV, Amazon today announced the Amazon Fire TV. According to chairman Jeff Bezos, the Fire TV “is a tiny box that plugs into your HDTV. It’s the easiest way to enjoy Netflix, Prime Instant Video, Hulu Plus, WatchESPN, low-cost video rentals, and more. With instant access to over 200,000 TV episodes and movies, plus all your favorite subscriptions and streaming services, you can watch what you want, when you want.”
In addition, if you’re a Prime member “you get unlimited access to thousands of popular movies and TV shows, including exclusives like Downton Abbey, The Americans, Alpha House, and Under the Dome.” All in 1080p, of course.
Bu wait, there’s even more. “Fire TV has voice search that actually works. The old way of searching with a TV remote—scrolling and clicking one letter at a time on an alphabet grid—is painful. With Fire TV you simply speak the title, actor, or genre into the remote and you’re done.”
The internal specs of the Fire TV are impressive as well. The device features a quad-core processor, dedicated GPU, 2 GB of memory, and dual-band, dual-antenna Wi-Fi. It also features a new buffering system which will supposedly help eliminate any streaming lag. Of course, your mileage may vary.
The device also plays games. Titles at launch include Minecraft, The Walking Dead, Monsters University, the Amazon exclusive Sev Zero, and many other free games available to Prime Members.
The Amazon Fire TV is $99.00 and ships today. The optional game controller will set you back another $39.99.

If you’re already taking advantage of Amazon’s Prime service, this is a post for you. And if you’re not, it might be a good idea to pay attention too. Why?
Well, the company announced today they are raising prices on their Prime service to $99 from its current level of $79. Students will pay $49, up from $39.
New members have until March 20 to sign up for $79, according to the company, while current members will see the price increase to $99 at their next renewal. Guess they’ve gotta pay for those drones somehow, right?
Members whose accounts are set to renew before April 17 will be charged $79. Lucky them.
Currently, members get unlimited free two-day shipping on eligible items, free streaming of movies and TV episodes, and free e-book borrowing from Amazon’s library of more than 475,000 titles. It’s expected that Amazon will offer additional services and perks to help soften the blow of the price increase. But so far, no word on what those might be.
In the meantime, if you haven’t signed up yet, now would be a good time. Check out more at the official Amazon Prime page.

Much as it did with The Killing and Arrested Development, Netflix has decided to give a cancelled series a new lease on life. Well, for at least one more season anyway. That series? Star Wars: The Clone Wars.
That’s right, the streaming service will unleash a 13-episode sixth season of the animated series next month. The season will be called Titled The Lost Missions which promises to reveal “some of the deepest mysteries of the conflict between the light and the dark sides of the Force leading to a series finale.”
“An intrepid clone trooper discovers a shocking secret, Anakin Skywalker’s closest relationship is tested to its limits, and what Master Yoda discovers while investigating the disappearance of a Jedi could forever change the balance of power in the galaxy.”
Sounds good, right? We really hope this is a success because then it could open up other opportunities for canceled series that didn’t get a proper send off.
Firefly anyone? Let’s make it happen Netflix.
Look for Star Wars: The Clone Wars to debut in March 7.

This will be a welcome announcement for the thousands (or more) of you using an Apple TV. HBO Go and Watch ESPN are now available via that device.
“HBO GO and WatchESPN are some of the most popular iOS apps and are sure to be huge hits on Apple TV,” said Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Internet Software and Services. “We continue to offer Apple TV users great new programming options, combined with access to all of the incredible content they can purchase from the iTunes Store.”
In case you didn’t know: HBO GO users get unlimited access to their favorite HBO shows, including HBO original programming, hit movies, sports, documentaries, comedy specials and more. This includes full seasons of the best of HBO, plus bonus features and special behind-the-scenes extras. HBO GO on Apple TV requires a subscription to HBO through participating television providers.
Here’s all the technical details too, just in case: Apple TV requires iTunes 10.5 or later. Apple TV requires an 802.11g/n Wi-Fi network or Ethernet network, a broadband Internet connection and a HD TV capable of 1080p or 720p and an HDMI cable that is sold separately. Third generation Apple TV hardware is required to play 1080p video. HBO GO, Watch ESPN, SkyNews, Crunchyroll and Qello require Apple TV software version 5.3 available as a free software update for second and third generation Apple TV users.
Truth be told, this is great news. We love our Apple TV and now we don’t have to fire up the XBox 360 or PS3 just to watch repeats of Game of Thrones. Thanks Apple.

Many TV series deserve to be canceled. Some don’t resonate with audiences or have unappealing characters or a ridiculous premise. Or, they just plain suck. Arrested Development is not one of those series.
Fortunately, even though it was initially canceled by Fox, the series has found a new lease on life at Netflix. And now, that lease is about to pay off for fans as Netflix has official announced the premiere date of Sunday, May 26th for all-new episodes of the show.
But wait, there’s more. Not only has the official premiere date been announced, Netflix has also decided to increase the number of episodes (which had started at 10 and was raised to 14 in January) to a new number: 15. All episodes of the new season will be available simultaneously on launch day, which is the same thing Netflix did with House of Cards.
“Arrested Development is now widely viewed as one of the top TV comedies of all time and Mitch Hurwitz is bringing it to Netflix in a brand new way, crafted for the on-demand generation that has come to discover the show in the years since it last appeared on TV,” said Ted Sarandos, Chief Content Officer for Netflix. “The highly anticipated return of this show is sure to make history all over again.”
Said Hurwitz, “Ted said that? Wow. Well don’t print this obviously, but he’s going to be immensely disappointed”. He then added that “in truth we are doing something very ambitious that can only be done with Netflix as partners and on their platform. Finally my simple wish for the show is coming true: that it be broadcast every second around the clock to every television, computer or mobile device in existence.”
I sense an Arrested Development binge session coming soon. Can’t Wait.

Microsoft has done a great job transforming the Xbox 360 from an awesome gaming console to a complete home entertainment system, offering services like like Netflix, Hulu Plus, YouTube and WatchESPN as well as premium cable services (depending on your television provider) like HBO Go, Xfinity, and Verizon FiOS.
Now, with DVD rental giant Redbox getting into the instant streaming arena, the folks out of Redmond decided to give their Xbox Live Gold subscribers a shot at one month of the brand new service for free, after creating an account with Redbox using this link, and adding a credit card to the account, of course.

One of the things people liked most about watching movies on DVD and Blu-ray, besides the movie itself, was the supplemental material. Deleted or extra scenes, making-of docs and commentary from the director and stars, in most cases, added to the experience of watching your favorite films.
With the explosive popularity of streaming and watching content online, you just don’t get the same supplemental content or experience anymore. AMC’s new service called Yeah! seeks to to change that.
Announced at SXSW this week, Yeah! will feature films “enhanced with interactive features including 400-500 individual pieces of original content curated from in-depth research.” These include facts and figures about the movie, quizzes, interviews with the directors and more. If these don’t detract from watching the movie itself, it could be quite a cool service.
Some of the films on Yeah! at launch include Superman, Reservoir Dogs, Clerks, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Pulp Fiction, Scream, 300 and The Terminator, with more being added regularly.
Yeah! is available now right here, with movies costing $5 for a 48-hour rental. An iPad app is expected to launch this Summer.

For those of you old enough to know, the Criterion Collection made its name putting together pristine collections of movies and supplemental material back when the Laser Disc was the standard. These collections featured state-of-the-art audio and picture quality as well as behind-the-scenes info, docs, photos and much more.
Over the years the Criterion Collection moved from the Laser Disc to DVD and then Blu-ray. Fortunately, they don’t confine their outstanding catalog of titles to only physical media. In fact, many of their movies can be found online at places like Hulu.
Which, of course, brings us to the point. Because the folks at the Criterion Collection are so cool, they’re offering their entire catalog of films that stream on Hulu for free this weekend. That’s right, free. . . as in free beer.
Actually, this free movie fest started on February 14th and goes until February 18th. So, that’s more than a weekend! Now you have no excuse to go to Hulu and enjoy some great films.
