Check Out The Debut Of Mika’s ‘Kick-Ass’ Music Video

by Joe Gillis, Mar 18 2010 // 11:00 AM

For those not in the know when it comes to British pop musicians (we won’t blame you), Mika is a pretty big name in the world of UK Pop. He’s basically what Justin Timberlake is the US, but “across the pond.” He’s been on such shows as So You Think You Can Dance and Jimmy Kimmel Live, and now he’s even branching out into the world of comic book films, as his recent single is dedicated to the upcoming film Kick-Ass.

The song, appropriately titled “Kick Ass”, is a sort of anthem for the film, in which a teen wallflower decides to do something with his life and become a superhero. Other critics have referred to the song as “an updated version of the Highlander theme by Queen”, which makes complete sense. We can definitely see Mika becoming the modern day Queen, if only we could get an updated pop version of the Flash Gordon theme. Then we’d be in business.

Until then, check out Mika’s newest music video for the single, starring some of the cast of the film including Aaron Johnson, Chloe Moretz, and Christopher Mintz-Plasse. Be sure to catch Kick-Ass in theaters on April 16th of this year (or April 2nd if you’re in the UK.)

Need A ‘Kick-Ass’ Companion Book? Mark Millar Already Wrote One

by Elisabeth Rappe, Mar 17 2010 // 4:30 PM

I’m still anxiously awaiting the day I get to see Kick-Ass, and be as cool as our SXSW team that caught its Austin premiere. (Be sure to check out Shannon Hood’s review.)   But at least I could content myself with Mark Millar’s Kick-Ass: Creating the Comic, Making the Movie which the gang at Titan Books was kind enough to let me review.

Anyone who viewed the trailer knows that Kick-Ass is going to be a unique movie. One look at Chloe Moretz’s Hit Girl can tell you that much. But I hadn’t realized just how unusual its page-to-screen transition was. Millar was still in the process of sketching the book out when he approached Matthew Vaughn (licking his wounds after leaving Thor) about directing.

The movie took shape as the comic did, with Millar running back and forth between the production offices and his own keyboard, incorporating ideas from Vaughn and screenwriter Jane Goldman as he went. Characters who were meant to be minor players such as Red Mist took on a life of their own after they were cast, and ended up becoming major players in Kick-Ass’ story arc. If there’s a sequel to Kick-Ass, it may be entirely due to Christopher Mintz-Plasse single-handedly rewriting his character.

‘Kick-Ass’ Goes All Retro With New Posters

by Matt Raub, Mar 16 2010 // 11:00 AM

Just when we thought things were slowing down on the side of marketing for the upcoming Lionsgate adaptation of Kick-Ass, they come up with even more eye candy for us to peruse over. With that in mind, come three new posters for the upcoming flick, which all have a neat retro theme.

The film, which is based on the indie Marvel comic by Mark Millar (Wanted), already takes on the attributes of a zany ultraviolent film of yesteryear, so it only makes sense that they would put together some quirky posters that showed that off.

The film stars Aaron Johnson, Chloe Moretz, Mark Strong, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, and Nicolas Cage. Check out the new posters after the jump, and be sure to catch Kick-Ass in theaters on April 16th.

SXSW Review: ‘Kick-Ass’

by Shannon Hood, Mar 14 2010 // 7:35 AM

Make no mistake about it, Chloe Moretz (500 Days of Summer) owns this movie. She may only be 11 years old, but her performance as Hit-Girl is spunky, sassy, and exciting. Hit-Girl is poised to become a new comic cult icon, and Kick-Ass is quite simply a rollicking good time.

At one of the panels I attended this weekend, someone likened Kick-Ass to a comic type Pulp Fiction, which I would say is a pretty accurate description. British Actor Aaron Johnson plays Dave Lizewski, a nerdy high school type whose only interaction with the popular kids is when he brushes up against one at his locker.

One day out of the blue he decides he is going to become a vigilante superhero. He concocts a hideous green costume that resembles a wet suit, sets up a social media homepage for his alter ego, and starts “training.” When someone asks his name, he proudly proclaims, “I’m Kick-Ass!”

Completely inept and not blessed with any actual powers, Dave gets the living crap beat out of him by a few thugs mere moments after his official debut as Kick-Ass. This results in a multitude of injuries requiring steel plates and rods being placed throughout his body, which makes him a little more impervious to injury, but still not in possession of actual powers.

New Red Band ‘Kick-Ass’ Trailer Goes Online

by Matt Raub, Feb 19 2010 // 11:00 AM

Yesterday, we brought you a cool behind-the-scenes feature going backstage on the set of Liongsgate’s newest upcoming comic film, Kick-Ass. With that, we got to see a bit more of Mark Strong as the main baddie in the film, some more of Chloe Moret’z “Hit Girl”, and lots of Matthew Vaughn going hands-on on the set.

Today, we’re getting even more, as a brand new red band trailer has hit the web. The trailer has got pretty much everything you would want in a red band: swearing, nudity, and outrageous violence. Obviously, it should be filed under NSFW.

Unfortunately, Cage’s “Ass-Kick” line still makes the trailer. Let’s hope it doesn’t make the final cut of the film.

Check out the new trailer after the jump, from our pals at Trailer Addict, and be sure to catch Kick-Ass, starring Aaron Johnson, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Chloe Moretz, Mark Strong, and Nic Cage, on April 16th.

‘Kick-Ass’ Mini Documentary Goes Online

by Matt Raub, Feb 19 2010 // 7:00 AM

With Matthew Vaughn’s Kick-Ass coming to theaters this April, Lionsgate has been stepping up their marketing in spades over the past month. They put out a few cool new trailers, some great character posters, and now they’re rolling out a neat new mini documentary of life on the set.

Empire was lucky enough to film the antics backstage with just about everyone from the cast, including Aaron Johnson, Mark Strong, Chloe Moretz, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, and even Matthew Vaughn himself.

Now that Mark Millar’s first run has ended in the comics, we all know what we’re in store for with the film, and it should be a fun ride, including the possible on-screen death of a very unlikeable A-list actor.

Check out Empire’s mini documentary after the jump, and be sure to catch Lionsgate’s Kick-Ass in theaters on April 16th.

‘Kick-Ass’ Gets A Red Band International Trailer

by Sebastian Suchecki, Feb 3 2010 // 7:00 AM

Big week for international trailers, with the first one for Clash of the Titans hitting yesterday. Now the first red band international trailer for Lionsgate’s Kick-Ass is here, and it looks, well, kick ass.

We first got a glimpse at the film by Matthew Vaughn when the San Diego Comic-Con footage leaked in July of last year, then Lionsgate picked up distribution for the film and started rolling out tons and tons of promotion for the project.

With that comes the newest red band trailer for the film, giving us all of the f-bombs and headshots that we loved to see in the book. The adaptation of the Mark Millar comic stars Aaron Johnson as the titular Kick-Ass, along with Chloe Moretz, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Nic Cage, and  Sinestro frontrunner Mark Strong.

Check out the new NSFW trailer after the jump, and catch Kick-Ass in theaters on April 16.

Brand New ‘Kick-Ass’ Trailer Hits The Web

by Joe Gillis, Jan 8 2010 // 1:00 PM

kick-ass-posterThanks to the cool guys and gals at Yahoo Movies, we can bring you the latest theatrical trailer for Matthew Vaugh’s highly anticipated (especially in Geek circles) film Kick-Ass. As you might be aware, the film is based on the comic series by Mark Millar and John Romita, Jr., tells the story of teenager Dave Lizewski (Aaron Johnson) who decides to take crime fighting into his own hands and don the moniker “Kick-Ass” while he uncovers the true darkness in the city and gets the crap kicked out of him in the process.

The first trailer and the clips looked pretty cool and left us all hungry for more. And I don’t mind saying that this new trailer only increases our level of excitement adding much more to the action and character mix. This movie looks great and hopefully we’ll get to see it once SXSW rolls around.

Check it out after the jump. Kick-Ass, starring Aaron Johnson, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Chloe Moretz and Nicolas Cage, hits theaters on April 16th, 2010.

SXSW Chooses Opening Night Film

by Chris Ullrich, Jan 6 2010 // 10:00 AM

kickass11-200x300The South by Southwest Film Conference and Festival in Austin has chosen the film that will open its 2010 festival and its one that will surely please fanboys (and girls) alike: Matthew Vaughn’s highly anticipated Kick-Ass. The film, based on the comic by Mark Millar and John Romita, Jr., tells the story of teenager Dave Lizewski (Aaron Johnson) who decides to take crime fighting into his own hands and don the moniker “Kick-Ass” while he uncovers the true darkness in the city and gets the crap kicked out of him in the process.

In addition to Kick-Ass, the SXSW festival, which runs from March 12-20, announced five other film titles making an appearance at the fest this year including Electra Luxx, from director Sebastian Gutierrez, Cold Weather, the latest from SXSW alum Aaron Katz, and the first public screening of the IMAX space film Hubble 3D. In addition, actor-turned-director James Franco’s Saturday Night, a documentary that takes you behind the scenes during the production of an episode of Saturday Night Live, will also screen at the fest.

Kick-Ass will be released by Lionsgate on April 16. More of the festival’s approximately 125 features will be announced in early February.

Be sure to check back right here for all your SXSW news.

New Clip From ‘Kick-Ass’ And Poster Of Cage’s ‘Big Daddy’

by John Muth, Dec 15 2009 // 8:00 AM

bigdaddyThere’s a lot of interest in Matthew Vaughn’s Kick-Ass these days and now there’s a couple of new items that have been released, in the form of a new poster and trailer courtesy of UGO.com, which give us a better look at one character in particular: Nicolas Cage as Big Daddy. The character, fairly obviously modeled after Batman right down to the yellow-highlighted utility belt, is standing on a rooftop overlooking Manhattan and features the caption “I can’t be invisible. But I can kick your ass.”

The new clip shows Cage’s character not in costume, but in a secluded location training his daughter Hit Girl, played by Chole Moretz. Said training involves learning how to take a couple bullets to the chest while wearing a bulletproof vest and then negotiating with her father to allow her to shoot him a couple more times. The clip further reinforces the humor, and how dark it is, that has previously been established in prior trailers.

I’m sure these latest two releases will bring interest in the film to an even higher pitch. Unfortunately, we’ve still got to wait until April, 2010 to wait to see it in theaters. Until then, check out the clip and a larger version of the poster after the jump.
