by Joe Gillis, Sep 23 2011 // 5:30 PM

First Trailer for ‘Machine Gun Preacher’ with Gerard Butler Arrives

by Joe Gillis, Aug 22 2011 // 10:00 AM

No, this movie isn’t a sequel or prequel to Hobo with a Shotgun, although I can see how you may make that mistake. Instead, we’ve got Gerard Butler wielding the weapons and taking care of business in this Marc Forster-directed action/drama film with a heart.

Coming soon from Relativity Media, the film is based on the true story of Sam Childers, a tough guy who’s seen and done too much. After some particularly brutal misadventures his life takes a big turn when he finds purpose in establishing a haven for Sudanese children.

We’ve got the trailer for the film for you today and in it we can see what we need to see to know this movie could go one of two ways. Those two ways depend pretty much on if we believe Butler can pull off another tough but inevatible self-sacrificing role.

We’re betting he can, but you be the judge. Watch the trailer after the jump.

In addition to Butler, Machine Gun Preacher also stars Michelle Monaghan and Michael Shannon. It’s set to be released on September 23.

First Image of Henry Cavill as Superman Hits the Web

by Matt Raub, Aug 4 2011 // 10:30 AM

Coming on the heels of some rather eyebrow-raising news that Laurence Fishburne has been cast as Perry White, Warner Bros. is making sure you stay excited about their newest Superman film, Man of Steel, with a brand new pic of star Henry Cavill in the super suit.

The film, directed by Sucker Punch visionary Zack Snyder, is said to be a fresh new take on the classic Superman tale, while finally giving us the Superman that we have wanted in theaters for decades. Now that just about the entire cast is in place, here’s the official press release from WB:

Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures have provided the first look at the new “Man of Steel,” revealing star Henry Cavill as Superman in the film from director Zack Snyder. The film also stars three-time Oscar nominee Amy Adams (“The Fighter”) as Daily Planet journalist Lois Lane, and Oscar nominee Laurence Fishburne (“What’s Love Got to Do with It”) as her editor-in-chief, Perry White. Starring as Clark Kent’s adoptive parents, Martha and Jonathan Kent, are Oscar nominee Diane Lane (“Unfaithful”) and Academy Award winner Kevin Costner (“Dances with Wolves”).

Squaring off against the superhero are two other surviving Kryptonians, the villainous General Zod, played by Oscar nominee Michael Shannon (“Revolutionary Road”), and Faora, Zod’s evil partner, played by Antje Traue. Also from Superman’s native Krypton are Lara Lor-Van, Superman’s mother, played by Julia Ormond, and Superman’s father, Jor-El, portrayed by Academy Award winner Russell Crowe (“Gladiator”).

Check out the full sized image of Cavill ripping apart a bank vault after the jump. Keep an eye out as more Man of Steel info and photos hit the web soon.

Laurence Fishburne Cast in ‘Superman: Man of Steel’….As Perry White?

by Matt Raub, Aug 3 2011 // 8:00 AM

As a journalist, it becomes daunting to constantly report on a film with a “WTF?” attitude, but that’s exactly the reaction we have every time we get casting news about Zack Snyder’s upcoming Superman reboot/sequel, titled Man Of Steel.

With the exception of Michael Shannon and the lead Henry Cavill, every other piece of casting news has been quite questionable for a film like Superman. Between Kevin Costner as Jonathan Kent, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, and Diane Lane as Martha Kent, how much weirder could this film get? How about Matrix star Laurence Fishburne as Daily Planet Editor-in-Chief Perry White? That’s right. EW has the scoop.

The casting resolves the question of what Laurence would be up to following his departure this May from CBS’ long-running CSI after just over two seasons. (Ted Danson will take Fishburne’s place on the show this fall.)

White has traditionally been a hard-charging, old fashioned newspaperman, who relies on his ace reporters, Clark and Lois, to get the big scoop. Jackie Cooper played White in the Christopher Reeve-era Superman films, and Frank Langella took on the role in director Bryan Singer’s Superman Returns in 2006.

Russell Crowe Looking To Play Jor-El In Zack Snyder’s ‘Superman’

by Matt Raub, Jun 16 2011 // 7:00 AM

Casting for this film just gets weirder and weirder. First we learned that redhead Amy Adams would be playing the brunette and love interest of the titular Man of Steel, Lois Lane in the upcoming Superman reboot from director Zack Snyder. Then we learned that both Kevin Costner and Diane Lane were both cast to play the Kents, Superman’s Earth parents. And now we’re getting probably the weirdest of news.

THR is reporting that Russell Crowe is interested in portraying the late Kryptonian father of Superman, Jor-El. This comes as a bit of a surprise, considering the pickiness that Crowe has established in picking his previous roles.

One can only imagine that it’s the pedigree of following Marlon Brando as the character, who reportedly was paid $3.7 million back in the mid-70′s for a measly 15 minutes of screen time. Could Crowe be going after that same easy cash? Or is he a closet Superman fan that we never knew about?

The film also stars Tudors actor Henry Cavill as the red-caped hero, and Boardwalk Empire star Michael Shannon as the film’s villain, General Zod. With Zod being the villain in the film, we can expect Crowe’s alleged Jor-El to play a slightly larger role in the film, as it was he who imprisoned Zod in the Phantom Zone all along.

We hope to hear more (and hopefully get a title) soon as the film begins shooting later this year in Vancouver.

‘Superman: Man of Steel’ Casts Antje Traue as Villainess Faora

by Matt Raub, Apr 28 2011 // 8:00 AM

About a month ago, we brought you news that Zack Snyder’s Superman: Man Of Steel had finally cast its main villain, General Zod, to be played by Boardwalk Empire star Michael Shannon. It seems now Zod has a sidekick, as German actress Antje Traue has been cast as Zod’s right hand woman Faora.

Comic fans may know the name, but for those who aren’t inundated in DC’s lore as much, Faora was the main inspiration behind the character Ursa from Richard Donner’s Superman and Superman 2. Variety breaks down the origins of the character.

There are multiple Faoras in the Superman universe, so it remains unclear which one Traue has been tapped to play. The first Faora, Faora Hu-Ul, was introduced in Action Comics #471 as a beautiful Kryptonian woman with an intense unexplained hatred for all men.

She was an expert at the Kryptonian martial art of Horo-Kanu, which utilizes pressure points on the Kryptonian body and made her a dangerous foe for Superman to fight in hand-to-hand combat. In fact, he was forced to flee from their first encounter.

‘Boardwalk Empire’ Star Michael Shannon Is General Zod In Snyder’s ‘Superman: Man of Steel’

by Matt Raub, Apr 11 2011 // 8:30 AM

Quite a big weekend for casting in the DC and Warner Bros. world, as it was recently announced that Josh Pence will be playing a young Ra’s Al Ghul in Chris Nolan’s upcoming Dark Knight Returns. However, that’s not the only caped crusader flick to get a villain.

THR is reporting that Boardwalk Empire and Revolutionary Road actor Michael Shannon will be taking on the role of the villain General Zod. Here’s what Snyder had to say about the decision.

“Zod is not only one of Superman’s most formidable enemies, but one of the most significant because he has insights into Superman that others don’t. Michael is a powerful actor who can project both the intelligence and the malice of the character, making him perfect for the role,”

Shannon compliments a pretty rounded out cast including Amy Adams, Diane Lane, Kevin Costner, and The Tudors star Henry Cavill playing the titular role. It seems that the role of Superman/Clark Kent is the only role so far to be played by a British actor, which is normally the opposite plan of producer Christopher Nolan.

For those worried that Shannon may be too “mainstream” to play an evil, super powered general, this isn’t the actor’s first foray into the world of comics. Last year, he graced the screen as Doc Cross Williams in DC’s bastard stepchild of a comic adaptation, Jonah Hex.

Now that we have our baddie for the film, we just need some iconic supporting roles like Perry White and Jimmy Olsen filled in. But who will be chosen?
