That’s right folks, it’s a brand new episode of The Flickcast. And only one day late! Woot! Sorry, we tried.
Anyway, on this week’s show, Chris and Joe discuss and debate all-things Guardians of the Galaxy. Yes, they even settle the bet. Who won? Well, you’ll just have to listen to find out, won’t you?
They also find some time to talk about Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar and a few other things too. That’s right, there’s also the usual “more.”
The pick this week is another dual one. Yes, the hosts are getting lazy, thanks for asking. Said pick is the new “Awesome Mix Vol. 1” from Guardians of the Galaxy. Check it out, it’s a good one.

In case you haven’t been watching, we need to alert you to the fact that HBO’s True Detective is a great show. But you can’t really be surprised, it is HBO after all. They have some other great shows you may have heard of like The Sopranos or Game of Thrones.
But if you really haven’t been watching, here’s a bit of info about the show:
True Detective is written by Nic Pizzolatto and directed by Cary Fukunaga. It centers on two detectives, Rust Cohle (Matthew McConaughey) and Martin Hart (Woody Harrelson), whose lives collide and entwine during a seventeen-year hunt for a serial killer in Louisiana. The investigation of a bizarre murder in 1995 is framed and interlaced with testimony from the detectives in 2012, when the case has been reopened.
In truth, that description doesn’t really do the show justice. It’s way more complicated than that. And awesome on so many levels.
If you have been watching (good for you) you know this Sunday brings a brand new episode, which we have a preview for after the break. Look for True Detective Sunday at 9/8C on HBO.

It’s that time again, folks. That’s right, a brand new episode of The Flickcast is here and once again it’s yours for the taking. Still for free.
Of course, Chris and Joe are back and ready to rock and roll with a whole slew of new and recurring topics. Some of these topics include the new photos released from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Michael Bay’s filmmaking prowess, some X-Men: Days of Future Past magazine covers, the amazingness of Hugh Jackman, the Syfy series Helix, Thor 3 and Captain America 3, the imminent return of The Walking Dead and the fact that everything sucks, at least if you believe people on the Interwebs.
There’s also the ever-present more. And, 20% more sincerity this week. So yeah, there’s that.
This week’s picks include Chris’ pick of the HBO series True Detective and Joe’s pick of the XBMC software for the Rasberry Pi. Nerd, amiright?

One thing we really love around here is a good, gritty detective story. If it’s well done it can be riveting to watch and as the story unfolds the revelations can often be shocking and very satisfying. That’s one of the hallmarks of a great show.
A prime example of this is HBO’s latest drama True Detective, which stars Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey and is written by Nic Pizzolatto. We won’t spend a lot of time describing the show, but instead will say this: you should be watching it.
It’s that good — especially if you’re a fan of the aforementioned gritty, detective stories. This one’s got grit to spare.
We’ve got a preview of the second episode to share with you today. Check it out after the break.
True Detective airs Sundays at 9/8C on HBO.

Even though we don’t really care all that much who or what wins an Academy Award, the rest of Hollywood does. It’s also likley many of you care as well.
So, in that spirit, here’s a list of the nominations that were announced this morning. There’s a lot of them and, to put it bluntly, not that many surprises. The movies and performances that seem “Oscar-worthy” were nominated. It was kinda a no-brainier year.
Of course, there’s also a few regulars who made the cut, like Meryl Streep, you would expect to see on the list. One notable exception is Tom Hanks, who seemed to be a shoe-in for a nomination for his role as Captain Phillips. He got nothing.
I guess every Oscar nominations list needs at least one surprise, just to try and keep it interesting and prove the Oscar voters don’t just vote for whomever or whatever wins a Golden Globe. Of course, Hanks didn’t win the Golden Globe either, but I’m sure it was just a pleasure to be nominated.
Anyway, here’s the nominations list (stolen from the folks at Deadline):

With The Wire, The Sopranos, True Blood and Game of Thrones, just to name a few, HBO continues to be one of the best networks to find original and entertaining programming. They look to be continuing that trend with the upcoming series True Detective.
The show, which stars Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson as Louisiana detectives Rust Cohle and Martin Hart, tells the story of a 17-year long hunt for a killer. Ranging from the original investigation of a bizarre murder in 1995 to the reopening of the case in 2012, the two detectives becomes locked in a cycle of violence and obsession as they trey to unravel the mystery.
With the latest trailer for the series, we can certainly tell that this show is going to be one to watch. True Detective debuts Sunday, January 12 on HBO. Check out the trailer after the break.

This first trailer for The Wolf of Wall Street actually came out last night, but that’s okay. We still feel it’s important enough to bring to you.
That mostly because its Martin Scorsese teaming up with Leonardo DiCaprio again. They seem to do pretty well together before. Check out The Departed if you don’t believe us.
In this one, a biographical crime pic based on the memoir by Jordan Belfort, DiCaprio plays the hard partying “boiler room” stockbroker who scammed $200M from investors and was indicted for securities fraud in 1998.
Also in the film are Matthew McConaughey, Jonah Hill, Jean Dujardin, Rob Reiner, Kyle Chandler, Margot Robbie and Jon Bernthal. Look for this one to hit theaters on November 15.
Check out the first trailer after the break.

In what will surely be the most sought after new property on television, True Detective is being shopped to various cable networks. The eight-part series already has Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson attached to star, which should help quite a bit.
True Detective is being described as a complicated narrative that will tell the story from multiple perspectives and utilizing multiple time frames. The story will follow two detectives, Rust Cohle (McConaughey) and Martin Hart (Harrelson), whose lives intertwine during a seventeen year search for a serial killer in Louisiana. The story will follow the events of a bizarre murder in 1995, which will be told both using scenes from that time and the current day testimony from the detectives in 2012.
The current idea is to utilize the 8-episode first season to resolve the mystery at hand, and have it be a stand alone story. Each of the subsequent seasons would use a similar structure, but follow all new characters and a different mystery.
The first season will be written by Nic Pizzolatto, best known as the author of the collection Between Here and the Yellow Sea and the novel Galveston, as well as writing credits on AMC’s The Killing. Cary Fukunaga (Jane Eyre, Sin Nombre) is set to direct all 8 episodes. In addition to having already signed on a writer, director and stars, True Detective is being pitched with two fully written episodes.
This is the first TV collaboration for the real life best friends McConaughey and Harrelson, who have starred in two features together, EdTV and Surfer, Dude. For McConaughey, this series would be the first regular TV series gig. Harrelson, on the other hand, got his big break on the classic TV show Cheers.

Let’s get this out of the way in advance: I’m a fan of actor, personality and bongo player Matthew McConaughey. Even though he’s been dipping in the romantic comedy well too much for the last several years, I’ve always thought he had an edge that needed to be explored.
Looks like I’m getting my wish with his upcoming film Killer Joe. In fact, not only does McConaughey look like he’s continuing to return to better, more challenging, roles the film also marks another directing effort for one of my favorites, William Friedkin. So, win win.
The film, written by Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award writer Tracy Letts, tells the story of a Dallas detective who is also a hired killer. Talk about conflicted. Check out the synopsis below and a cool clip for the film after the jump:
When 22 year-old drug dealer Chris (Emile Hirsch) has his stash of drugs stolen from him by his mother, he has to come up with six-thousand dollars quick, or he’s dead. Desperate, he goes to the trailer-park to see his father, Ansel (Thomas Hayden Church), and he lays out the plan. Chris’s mother, who everyone hates, has a life insurance policy that would clear up his debt and make them all rich. The problem is that Chris’ mother is very much alive.
Enter Detective “Killer” Joe Cooper, a hired hit man with the manners of a Southern gentleman, who will do the job – for an upfront fee, that Chris and Ansel can’t pay. Just as Joe is about to leave, he spots Dottie (Juno Temple), Chris’ innocent younger sister. Joe makes Chris an offer, he’ll keep Dottie as sexual collateral until the money is collected and his fee can be paid. Chris reluctantly puts his debt ahead of his sister and agrees to Joe’s demand.

Happy belated 4th of July to all you War Movie Mondays fans. In celebration of our nation’s 235th anniversary, this week’s pick salutes American submariners of World War II with U-571 (2000) directed by Jonathan Mostow.
The film stars Matthew McConaughey (Lt. Andrew Tyler) Bill Paxton (Capt. Mike Dahlgren), Harvey Keitel (Chief Gunner’s Mate Henry Klough), Jon Bon Jovi (Lt. Peter Emmet), and David Keith (Maj. Matthew Coonan).
U-571 is a fictional account about a U.S. Navy submarine crew which boards, and captures a German U-boat in the Spring of 1942 in order to seize the German’s secret cipher machine code named: Enigma. The device allowed the German high command to transmit radio messages to their U-boat fleet which were destroying the vital convoy lines from America to Britain. The code was unique and made it impossible for the allies to determine the German’s plans in the early stages of the war.
The film is superbly acted and won an Academy Award for Best Sound, but the film was not very well received in both England and Germany. The film was bashed in Britain due to the fact that the British were the first to ever capture an Enigma coding device in the war courtesy of the HMS Bulldog and HMS Aubretia of the 3rd Escort Group in the North Atlantic on May 9th 1941, seven months before the U.S. entered the war. Critics in Germany were none to thrilled of the way U-boat crewmen were portrayed.
