The Flickcast 307: Licence to Podcast

by The Flickcast, Nov 13 2015 // 1:00 PM

It’s Friday and you know what what means? Happy hour and a drunken stupor that lasts until Monday? Sure, why not?

However, it also means it’s time for a brand new episode of The Flickcast! Speaking of that . . .

On this week’s show Chris and Joe talk more about the upcoming Star Wars movie, the potential MST3K revival, Heroes Reborn, Blindspot and wax nostalgic about Mr. Robot. They also discuss The Flash, Arrow, The Walking Dead and don’t hold back their feelings on a potential Snowpiercer TV series.

Picks this week include Chris’ pick of the movie Spectre, and Joe’s pick of the recent performance of Peter Capaldi as “The Doctor” in that show about the Doctor who travels through time.

As always, if you have comments, questions, critiques, offers of sponsorship, or whatever, feel free to hit us up in the comments, on Twitter, at Facebook, Google+ or via email.

SDCC15: ‘Doctor Who’ is Coming to LEGO Dimensions

by Stephanie Coats, Jul 15 2015 // 10:00 AM

LEGO® DIMENSIONS

LEGO® DIMENSIONS™_20150703082142

Have you ever been playing Portal and wondered how The Doctor would do in Aperture Science? Thanks to Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment now you can find out. LEGO Dimensions announced at San Diego Comic-Con the upcoming inclusion of Doctor Who. It is the first time Doctor Who has ever been in a LEGO videogame.

The stars of the BBC America show have lent their voices to their respective characters in the game as well. Peter Capaldi, Jenna Coleman, and Michelle Gomez have all brought their Doctor Who personas to LEGO life in Dimensions. The game is truly a mash-up of worlds. The TARDIS could pop up in Gotham City or The Doctor could ride along with Scooby and Shaggy.

As is seen in the trailer, all twelve doctors are included in Dimensions. In fact, LEGO has pulled out all the stops to please Whovians. When the Twelfth Doctor is defeated in a level, he returns as the First Doctor and then continues regenerating back up to Twelve. The TARDIS interior changes depending on which Doctor is “alive” but can also be manually chosen by the player. A jukebox inside the TARDIS allows players to select different versions of the Doctor Who theme music.

‘Doctor Who’ Ends 2014 With Record Ratings

by Stephanie Coats, Jan 8 2015 // 11:01 AM

DW

The year of the Twelfth Doctor has also been the year of incredible ratings for BBC America. Doctor Who finished 2014 with its highest rated season ever including over 2.3 million viewers on Christmas Day for the special “Last Christmas” episode.

Peter Capaldi debuted as the newest regeneration of the beloved Time Lord alongside returning companion Jenna Coleman as Clara Oswald. Together the duo brought in an average 2.035 million viewers in Live+3, meaning those ratings also include DVR views. Capaldi’s first Christmas Special more than doubled the viewership of his predecessor’s first such episode, “A Christmas Carol,” in 2010. The Twelfth Doctor’s “Last Christmas” was the #1 show in all of Primetime television, excluding sports.

Series 8 added fresh new twists and turns to the Doctor Who mythos including a reappearance by The Master, but not as we’ve ever seen him before. Michelle Gomez starred as Missy, a female regeneration of the Doctor’s old frenemy . Samuel Anderson also had a touching and integral turn as Clara’s boyfriend Danny Pink.

“Last Christmas” will be available on Blu-ray and DVD on February 17. Doctor Who will return for another full season in 2015.

The Flickcast Episode 258: Equalize This!

by The Flickcast, Aug 27 2014 // 10:15 AM

Denzel-Washington-Equalizer

We’re back again with an all-new episode of The Flickcast. Be happy because it probably won’t last. But for now …

On this week’s show, Chris and Joe discuss and debate more Guardians of the Galaxy, James Gunn’s personality, upcoming TV series like Shutter Island and The Omen, Denzel Washington’s career and his upcoming Equalizer movie and the brand new season of Doctor Who.

Guess which of your favorite hosts liked the season premiere and which didn’t? Not that hard to figure out. Of course, that’s not all they talk about. There’s also the usual “more.”

Picks this week include Chris’ pick of the just released D&D Player’s Handbook from Wizards of the Coast and Joe’s pick of the movie Locke, featuring Tom Hardy and a car.

As always, if you have comments, questions, critiques, offers of sponsorship, or whatever, feel free to hit us up in the comments, on Twitter, at Facebook, Google+ or via email.

The Flickcast Episode 253: Damn Dirty Apes!

by The Flickcast, Jul 16 2014 // 10:30 AM

dawn-of-apes-war-1

After a week off for the 4th of July holiday, we’re back with a brand new episode of The Flickcast. And you thought we’d forgotten about you. Not likely.

On this week’s show Chris and Joe talk about a lot of different things, as usual. Some of these “things” include the recent Emmy nominations and the worst snubs, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, the latest on Doctor Who, more on Guardians of the Galaxy and a bunch of other stuff.

Chris and Joe even make a bet on the opening weekend box office for Guardians. What did they think? Well, you’ll just have to listen to find out. Saw that coming, didn’t you?

Picks this week include Chris’ pick of director John Hillcoat’s Lawless and Joe’s pick of the wonderful, and sadly soon to be extinct, 35mm film.

As always, if you have comments, questions, critiques, offers of sponsorship, or whatever, feel free to hit us up in the comments, on Twitter, at Facebook, Google+ or via email.

‘Doctor Who’ Casts Ben Miller as the Sheriff of Nottingham?

by Stephanie Coats, Apr 8 2014 // 1:00 PM

uktv-ben-miller

Ben Miller is set to star as a villain in a Doctor Who episode penned by Mark Gatiss. It will be the actor’s first role on the British juggernaut, which returns later this year.

“As a committed Whovian, I cannot believe my luck in joining the Twelfth Doctor for one of his inaugural adventures,” Miller said. “My only worry is that they’ll make me leave the set when I’m not filming.”

Rumors are swirling that Miller may be playing the Sheriff of Nottingham, or some Whovian iteration of the famous baddie. Last week, Tom Riley was cast in an upcoming Doctor Who episode and many are assuming he will be playing Robin Hood. The same rumors are naming other another recently announced guest star, Ian Hallard, as playing merry man, Alan-A-Dale.

For now, BBC America has not confirmed any role for Miller, except as a “storming villain” to go against Peter Capaldi’s Doctor. Best known for being one half of the comedy duo Armstrong and Miller, the actor was recently seen in BBC’s Death in Paradise as DI Richard Poole. Interestingly, Miller’s comedic partner, Alexander Armstrong, already had a stint on Doctor Who, appearing in the 2011 Christmas Special as Reg Arwell.

Samuel Anderson Joins ‘Doctor Who’ Series 8

by Stephanie Coats, Feb 24 2014 // 11:00 AM

New_Doctor_Who_companion_Samuel_Anderson

A new companion may be in store for the Doctor in series 8. Samuel Anderson has joined the cast of Doctor Who as recurring character, Danny Pink, in the new season.

Like the Doctor’s (Peter Capaldi) current companion, Clara Oswald (Jenna Coleman), Pink is a teacher at Coal Hill School. Other character details have yet to be released but perhaps he will be following in the footsteps of Rory Williams and Mickey Smith as the companion’s guy back home who eventually joins the Doctor’s traveling team.

Doctor Who’s lead writer and executive producer, Steven Moffat, points out Pink’s connection with a bit of the show’s history. “For the fourth time in Doctor Who history, Coal Hill School is coming to the aid of the TARDIS,” he said. “In 1963 teachers Ian Chesterton and Barbara Wright accompanied the first Doctor. These days it’s the turn of Jenna Coleman as Clara Oswald. And very soon now, Sam Anderson as Danny Pink will be entering the world of the Doctor.”

BBC America Reveals Peter Capaldi’s ‘Doctor Who’ Costume

by Stephanie Coats, Jan 27 2014 // 4:00 PM

DOCTOR-WHO-CAPALDI-1-Crop

New Doctor means new clothes. The Twelfth Doctor is getting into the Whovian swing of things by choosing an outfit all his own. BBC America has released the first image of Doctor Who actor Peter Capaldi in what will likely be his signature costume.

At first glance, Calpaldi’s look is old school with a bit of modern flair. While there is no bowtie or extra long scarf or Converse shoes to stand out, the clothes do fit the man. As Capaldi said, “He’s woven the future from the cloth of the past. Simple, stark, and back to basics. No frills, no scarf, no messing, just 100 per cent Rebel Time Lord.”

Of course all Whovians know that the Doctor’s outfit usually has a story behind it but fans will have to wait until later this year to learn how and why the Twelfth Doctor picked his costume. The specifics of the outfit, according to BBC America, are: a dark blue Crombie coat with red lining, dark blue trousers, a white shirt and black Doc Marten shoes.
