New ‘Mortal Kombat’ Short Better Than The Films

by Matt Raub, Jun 9 2010

We’re all pretty big fans of Bridget Wilson, so we can’t say the original Mortal Kombat film was a complete waste, but it still wasn’t all that good. There seems to be a light at the end of the tunnel, though, as a new video surfaced online. Yesterday, Kotaku was the first to get a brand new video which is being posed as a live action short for the new Mortal Kombat game.

It hasn’t been officially confirmed , so whether it’s for a new M-Rated game they are planning, or the new Warner Bros. reboot which has been talked about for a few months, your guess is as good as ours.

The video is far too high-end to be a fan film, and has some impressive names attached, such as Michael Jai White as Jackson “Jax” Briggs and Jeri Ryan as Sonja Blade. If this turns out to be for either the game or a film, it would be a completely different take on the Mortal Kombat mythology, as they’re modernizing many of the characters, and taking an interesting Saw-like serial killer take, where characters like Reptile and Barakka are insane killers, and not magic.

With E3 only days away, and none of us hearing about casting for an upcoming film, this could very well be a live-action scene for the game, which we’re also completely OK with. We’re sure to have a legitimate answer within the next week or so.

Check out the video after the jump, and let us know what you think and see for yourself that Mortal Kombat is definitely not for kids anymore.
