ThisTuesday, Sony’s newest version of their popular gaming console, the Playstation 3 Slim, will hit shelves across the country. If you’re one of those on the fence about purchasing it, we here at The Flickcast have got you covered. Here’s the lowdown on the differences between the older, fatter PS3 and the slimmer, more streamlined PS3 Slim.
What We Like
-This time around the PS3 will be 33% smaller and 36 percent lighter. Not only will this save gamers space, it will also make it easier to move between play sessions.
-$299 price tag. This finally puts the PS3 in the same price bracket as some Blu-ray players and the Nintendo Wii.
-New textured surface. The previous PS3 had a glossy finish, making it susceptible to scratching.
-120 GB Hard Drive, which is now easier to upgrade and will not void the warranty if removed.
What We Don’t Like
-While the HDD can be upgraded, you can’t install another operating system on the PS3 Slim, like Linux. This previously available option made the PS3 more than just a gaming console.
-No backwards compatibility. This means that if you are buying a PS3 Slim, you’ll want to hang onto your PS2 if you want to play your PS2 or PSX games.
-The previous PS3 could be positioned horizontally or vertically, making it easier to position in any kind of space. The PS3 Slim will only lie horizontally until you purchase a $24 stand which will allow vertical positioning.
Overall? If you don’t have a PS3 already, the PS3 Slim’s lower price tag and smaller size makes it even harder to resist this console. But if you’re happy with your older PS3, there may not be a reason to upgrade just yet.
We’ll have more from you on the PS3 Slim after its release, but for now we’ll leave you with some close-ups of the new hardware for you to drool over.

November 12, 2009 at 8:40 amIs it me or is the PS3 Slim a less sexier version than its predecessor?! Undoubtedly though it is definitely a quieter machine, but with the predecessor, taking a substantial price cut from Sony in October 2009 it is important to Compare Playstation 3 Prices, that the introduction of the PS3 Slim has brought about, particularly with the older PS3. Although I did not realise until I read this blog that the PS3 Slim doesn’t support backwards compatibility, nor does it enjoy additional operating systems like Linux, which are two big negative points for me!

October 31, 2009 at 1:11 pmI just bought a slim PS3 and traded in my older version. I must say it is a lot quiter than its predecessor, and it only cost me £10 after trade in! Mind you I did down size the hard drive
to 80GB :/. Meh, I’ll never need the space anyway haha. Cheers.
