About a year ago, a pretty impressive fan-made trailer for a Thundercats movie swept the internets, turning heads and opening eyes that there was still a pretty big fan base for the 80’s cartoon series about fantastical tiger-people with swords.
That spark opened up lots of different discussions about an actual Thundercats film, given the success of other 80’s cartoons-turned-films such as Michael Bay’s Transformers and even the critically-panned G.I. Joe. After months of silence on the subject, we presumed the idea to be dead, until our pals at MTV Splashpage got word of a brand new Thundercats animated series coming next year.
Produced by Warner Bros. Animation, the new “Thundercats” series will be the studio’s first project to use anime-style animation, and promises to be a “21st century reimagining” of the classic ’80s cartoon series.
Calling it “a sweeping tale combining swords and science and boasting ferocious battles with the highest of stakes,” the studio offered some hints about what the new “Thundercats” series will involve, including “the grand origin story of Prince Lion-O’s ascension to the throne – and of those who would thwart his destiny at any cost.”
For the project, WBA will collaborate with noted Japanese animation Studio4°C (“The Animatrix,” “Gotham Knights”), who will update the characters’ look for the series.
Not only did the cats at MTV get word about the show, but they also got the first image and poster from the new series, which boasts a new, darker look. If the image we see below is actually what Lion-O is going to look like, this may not be for the same campy audience that it was originally made for back in 1985.
