The Flickcast – Page 869 of 1030 – Stuff Nerds Love

Dave’s Weekly Comic Book Recommendations

sword-1This week I am personally fired up for the new Marvel series S.W.O.R.D. #1 by new Thor writer Kieron Gillen and Steven Sanders. The last time I saw Sanders he did the Five Fists of Science with Matt Fraction that feels like it was a century ago. The series is a spinoff from Joss Whedon’s Astonishing X-Men where we follow Agent Brand, Beast and Lockheed through the cosmos.

Following that is the new Doctor Strange spinoff, Strange by Mark Waid and Emma Rios. Being a nut for all things Deadpool, the latest issue of Amazing Spider-Man guest stars the Merc with a Mouth. But that’s not really why I’m buying the issue, its ’cause the awesome Eric Canete draws the issue.

For Matt, this week we have a Doc Savage special guest starring Batman. Written by the brilliant Brian Azzarello and drawn by Phil Noto, the Man of Bronze encounters the Dark Knight in non-period specific Manhattan.

A personal favorite of mine is the new Escapists trade paperback. This is a fairly old story, written by Lost’s Brian K. Vaughan and based on a Michael Chabon character. The Pulitzer Prize winning novel, The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay by Chabon created a new character called the Escapist.

This comic is about the character being re-imagined by Cleveland indy comic creators.  Its a fun read about friendship and comic creator rights written by the superb Vaughan through Dark Horse comics. I can only give it my highest possible recommendation.

As always, we here at The Flickcast care about what you read, so leave us a comment and let us know what you liked/didn’t like from this week’s comics. For a more complete list of what comes out this week, check out the one at Midtown Comics.

Review: ‘Boondock Saints 2: All Saints Day’

boondock-saints-2-all-saints-day

Not many people know this, but the first Boondock Saints film barely even happened. After a one week run in five theaters, the film was released on DVD… and embraced by a massive cult following. A sequel was always promised and showed up on IMDB years before production had even begun, but after a while, fans started to doubt that we’d ever even see another installment. Now, ten years later, Boondock Saints 2: All Saints Day happened, and thank the Lord it did.

All Saints Day picks up eight years after the McManus Brothers and their vigilante killing spree across Boston. They’ve fled to Ireland, along with their father, to find some peace and escape the insanity cause by their killings. But a copycat killer leaves their signature mark after murdering a priest and lure Connor and Murphy back to Boston to finish what they started eight years ago.

Marvel Comics On Sale This Week

X-Force21Normally, this info comes to us on Monday and we get it out to you then. Unfortunately, we got it a bit late and had a full plate at the site yesterday, so we’re it to you today instead. You’ve still got plenty of time to figure out what comics you want to buy, so don’t worry.

Also, remember that Wednesday is a holiday so new comics will be most likely be coming out on Thursday this week. If so, be sure not to show up at your local comic store demanding new comics on Wednesday and then wondering why you’re not getting what you want. Plus, being demanding makes you seem like a douche, so probably best to avoid that anyway.

Anyway, here’s a list of all the new Marvel titles hitting stores this week. Of course, we’ve also got some cool preview art for some of these titles as well, so check those out after the break.

DVD Review: ‘Natural Born Killers’ Unrated Director’s Cut

natural-born-killers-blu-ray-boxOliver’s Stone’s Natural Born Killers is a movie that, even with its political and social overtones, still stands the test of time. It’s a bravura tour de force motion picture that still pushes the limits of the form to this day. And now, a brand new Uncut Version and Director’s Cut has been released by Warner Home Video, which is sure to delight fans of this controversial motion picture.

An extremely violent satire of modern media that still asks questions 15 years later, the film is a brutal, bloody, surreal and stylized journey along with terrible twosome Mickey and Mallory Knox. Their tri-state killing spree brings questions of the media and its obsession with “celebrity” into focus. Even though this film was created before people like Paris Hilton, or whomever, could be considered a “celebrity” simply by virtue of being on the Internet or videotaping themselves having sex, it predicts a culture obsessed with these pseudo celebs all too realistically.

The story is presented in extremely diverse ways utilizing different colors, film stocks, presentation styles and many other ways, sometimes causing the very sensory overload in the viewer Stone is trying to show has overcome society. This somewhat over-the-top approach to the film only serves to heighten the experience and provides a great deal of fodder for standout performances by leads Woody Harrelson and Juliet Lewis as well as co-stars Robert Downey, Jr., Tommy Lee Jones and Tom Sizemore.

‘Astonishing X-Men’ Motion Comic Episode 2 Preview

astonishing-x-men-john-cassadayAs we’ve done previously, we’ve got a preview of the brand new Marvel motion comic Astonishing X-Men: Gifted. Featuring the talents of Joss Whedon and John Cassaday, this project offers fans a cool way to enjoy a great comic story on their favorite portable device like an iPhone or iPod Touch.

Even though I’m a fan of reading paper comics and I hope they don’t go away any time soon, this is just another way in which new fans can potentially be brought into the fold. Which is a good thing. Plus, with this kind of story and the talent involved, you have to expect this to be a pretty big success for Marvel. Hopefully, that will mean more comics will be getting the “motion” treatment.

So, check out this preview and enjoy it. Also, as we agreed to do in order to bring you cool things like this, following is Marvel’s “official” info about this project and this preview.

First New Poster for Tim Burton’s ‘Alice in Wonderland’

AW_Title w-Disney_wThere is lots to be said about what we’ve seen from Tim Burton’s upcoming reimagining of Alice in Wonderland, and most of it is about Johnny Depp’s performance as the Mad Hatter. While that will be a definite selling point for the film, there are still many things that it has to offer, such as the distribution in Disney 3D and IMAX 3D.

The rest of the cast fills out quite nicely, with Anne Hatheway, Helena Bonham Carter (Burton’s wife), Crispin Glover, and Mia Wasikowska joining the cast. Expect this to be about as twisted as the way Lewis Carroll originally imagined it.

The film hits theaters in 3D and IMAX on March 5th, 2010, but you can check out the brand new poster that has hit the web, along with an invitation to join The Disloyal Subjects of the Mad Hatter on Facebook. From there, you can become a fan to get major updates on the film and goodies for you to download.

Otherwise, keep it here as we bring you new stuff on Alice In Wonderland in the future, and check out the first full poster for the film after the jump.
