SDCC: New Publishing Deal for Jeff Smith’s ‘Bone’

Scholastic has announced that Jeff Smith will soon be expanding the popular Bone graphic novel series. The first book, Bone: Tall Tales, will be released Summer 2010, and will be a collaboration between Jeff Smith and Tom Sniegoski. The book will feature new art and stories about favorite Bone characters.

The duo will also collaborate on the highly-anticipated Quest for the Spark Trilogy, an expansion of the Bone world. The books, Bone Quest for the Spark: Book One (Fall 2010), “Bone Quest for the Spark: Book Two” (Spring 2011), and “Bone Quest for the Spark: Book Three” (Summer 2011) represent the first time Smith has continued the adventures set in the valley since the publication of Rose, the prequel to the Bone series, which will be released by Scholastic/Graphix in August 2009.

“I always said I would find a way to draw more Bone stories, and now I have,” said Jeff Smith. “Tom is great to work with and we’re going to have a lot of fun!”

SDCC: Taylor Lautner Discusses His Transformation in ‘New Moon’

taylor-lautner-sdcc09-cuReporting from Comic-Con, SciFiWire revealed that star Taylor Lautner spoke about his transformation into a werewolf during the press conference for The Twilight Saga: New Moon, the sequel to the mega-hit Twilight.

Readers of the Twilight series already know what is in store for Jacob this time around, even though his part was minimal in the first film. (Spoiler alert ahead!) Lautner marveled at his “wolf out” transformation from the second film.

“I thought they did a pretty good job with the wolf transformation,” Lautner told reporters. “I’m excited that there are werewolves involved now, because the werewolves definitely step up the action in the movie. There’s double the action in this movie than there was before.”

Although Visual-effects wizards handle the heavy lifting on werewolf transformation, Lautner had to buff out for the role. Early rumors even suggested recasting for a bulkier actor, but Lautner refused to let the part slip away from him.

“I knew when I was filming Twilight that Jacob’s character changed a lot, so if I wanted to continue portraying him directly,” Lautner continued. “I had a lot of work ahead of myself.”

SDCC: Johnny Depp Drives Fans Mad at ‘Alice in Wonderland’ Panel

It seems rather fitting that the Mad Hatter would show up unannounced in the middle of the Alice in Wonderland panel, especially when said hatter is Johnny Depp. MTV has reported that Johnny Depp surprised fans at the Disney 3-D panel at San Diego Comic-Con by showing up at the end of Tim Burton’s presentation of footage from the film.

The addition of Depp to the stage was a memorable end to the panel discussion, which began with filmmaker Tim Burton getting cheers from the crowd. The presentation included a teaser trailer of various footage from the film in 3-D, with Burton laughing about all the wacky characters included in his version of Alice in Wonderland.

“Looks like a freak show, doesn’t it?” the director laughed while the character images graced the screen.

Burton said the Alice in Wonderland film isn’t a faithful adaptation of the classic book by Lewis Carroll, but instead takes the characters and various scenes from the book and molds them into an updated story.

Alice in Wonderland stars Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Anne Hathaway, Alan Rickman and Mia Wasikowska and is scheduled for a March 5, 2010 release. Our coverage of Alice in Wonderland continues tomorrow right here at The Flickcast.

Not All Movies Will Work With ‘Netflix Party Play’

netflix-1One of the coolest announcements during Microsoft’s E3 press conference a couple months ago was the Netflix Party Play. This new feature means that friends with Xbox Live Gold and Netflix memberships can watch movies together, regardless of whether they’re in the same room. Viewer’s Xbox Avatars sit together on the screen during the movie and can talk to each other silently during the viewing.

Unfortunately, Kotaku reports that not all movies will work- specifically ones from Disney or Starz. Worse still, the films aren’t even marked as not usable with the service. Microsoft did confirm to Kotaku that they are aware of the problem. “We are working closely with our partners and studios to deliver Xbox LIVE Parties for as much content as possible,” a spokesman said.

“We offered the Xbox LIVE Party feature to all content owners, and what’s up on the service reflects what the rights holders are comfortable with. We’re confident that the community will be pleased with the great selection of Party-enabled content.”

The new Netflix features will be available on Xbox Live on August 11th.

SDCC: Stan Lee Talks ‘Time Jumper’

stan-lee-comic-con-09There’s not doubt that Stan Lee is one of the most successful, talented, creative and beloved figures in comics around. His creations, including Spider-Man, The Fantastic Four, The X-Men and Iron Man, are among the most successful and well-known characters ever to grace the pages of comics and the silver screen.

More recently, Lee has been hard at work on a new project with his partners at Disney, the multi-platform series Time Jumper, which will appear online and on portable devices such as iPods and iPhones. This new project concerns the character of Terry Dixon, who is an agent of a secret government organization known as HUNT (short for Heroes United, Noble and True).

He has a cellphone called The Articulus that has the one feature you can’t get — yet — from Apple’s iPhone: a time machine. I had a chance to talk with Lee during Comic-Con and we discussed, among other things, his new project, his thoughts on current Marvel movies and what he think the future holds for comics.

QUESTION: Stan, hi. Can you describe the process of how Time Jumper began?

STAN LEE: Time Jumper began as an idea that I had. I wanted to do a time travel story and my little company Pow Entertainment has a deal with the Walt Disney Company, it’s called a “first look” deal. Everything that we do that we wanna do we have to offer to Disney first and if they like it they do it. If they don’t wanna do it then we’re free to take it elsewhere.

SDCC: First Posters from Joss Whedon’s ‘Cabin in the Woods’!

whedon-cabin-in-the-woods-poster1-smallWhat would Comic-Con in San Diego be without some new things like posters dubuting during the Con? And what would Comic-Con be without something from Joss Whedon? Fortunately, we get to combine those two things into one right now by bringing you the brand new posters for Whedon’s upcoming film Cabin in the Woods, directly from the folks at MGM.

The film, written by Whedon and directed by Drew Goddard, is what could commonly be described as a horror/comedy, at least judging from the rather funny tag lines on the three posters. Still, as this film has been shrouded in secrecy, its not quite clear what the exact plot will be.

Fortunately, Whedon and Goddard have pretty good track records when it comes to bringing the action, the horror and the funny, so I’m pretty sure we will be in good hands here. Cabin in the Woods, which features Kristen Connolly, Chris Hemsworth, Anna Hutchison, Fran Kranz, Jesse Williams, Richard Jenkins, Bradley Whitford and Brian White, hits theaters in February 5, 2010.

Check out the full posters after the jump.
