First International Trailer for Sherlock Holmes

robert-downey-jr-sherlock-holmes-05While Robert Downy Jr. is off wearing his iron suit, there is another aspect of the multifaceted actor that we get to see on the silver screen this year, in Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes, out this Christmas. The first trailer hit a few months back, and looked pretty awesome. The newest one has the same clips from the film, but with a bit of a twist.

With the first trailer, the big reveal was that Downy Jr. was playing Sherlock Holmes, but in the beginning of the International trailer, the reveal is that Sherlock Holmes is being played by Robert Downy Jr. Check out exactly what that means after the break, and expect to see Sherlock and Watson–played by Jude Law–in the theaters this Christmas.

Brand New Clip from ‘9’ Released

9-poster-monsterWho says there’s nothing good to watch tonight? Well don’t worry, we’ve got you covered — at least for a few minutes — with this brand new clip from the highly anticipated film 9, directed by Shane Acker and Exec. Produced by Timur Bekmambetov and Tim Burton.

In this new clip, we’re treated to a pretty cool scene where the Stitchpunk Beings are being attacked by “The Winged Beast” which, by the looks of it, is something you really don’t want to be attacked by. Before you take a look at the clip and just in case you’re not familiar with the film, it concerns the character 9, who finds himself in a post-apocalyptic world where all humans are gone. It is only by chance he discovers a small community of others like him taking refuge from fearsome machines that roam the earth trying to destroy his kind.

9 convinces the others that hiding will do them no good. They must go on the offensive to survive, and they must discover why the machines want to destroy them in the first place. As they’ll soon come to learn, the very future of civilization may depend on them.

I don’t know about you, but I think that sounds (and so far looks) pretty awesome. 9, which features the voices of Elijah Wood, John C. Reilly, Jennfer Connelly, Martin Landau and Crispin Glover, hits theaters on 9.9.09. Check out this cool new clip from the film after the jump.

Review: ‘Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince’ — Cortney’s Take

harry-potter-and-the-half-blood-prince

Warning: This review CONTAINS SPOILERS. Seriously. Don’t read if you haven’t seen the movie or read the books.

I grew up with Harry Potter. Alongside him, is more appropriate actually. I picked up the first book from Barnes and Noble at the age of 9, and I remember the anticipation as each book came out. Each midnight release as my friend Emma’s mom, Ann, bought us root beers and cookies at the Barnes and Noble café while we trooped around in big rimmed glasses with lightning bolt scars drawn on our heads, awaiting 12 AM when the book would finally be in our hands.

As Harry grew and adventured and experienced, I did too. I felt the pangs of first love, the loss of old friends, the joys of new ones with a fictional character who was as real as anything to me. As I read the seventh and final book cover to cover last year, I felt like a piece of my childhood was gone. I was finally grown up.

The movie franchise, however I might feel about them, has been a bit backwards. As each film has been released I’ve been less and less excited. I thought they started out splendidly. I remember tearing up in the theater at the age of thirteen when I heard Sir Richard Harris mutter the line, “It does not do to dwell on dreams and forget to live.” I was terrified of the basilisk, and in love with Kenneth Branaugh as Gilderoy Lockhart. But as the kids grew up in the films and the CGI was relied on more and more, the magic was slowly lost for me. Especially in Movie 5, Order of the Phoenix.

Apple Wants Microsoft Ads Pulled

apple-pc-adsLooks like Apple can’t handle a little taste of their own medicine. After years of enduring Apple’s “I’m a Mac” commercials, Microsoft released an ad campaign of their own a few months back, in which customers were given free money to shop for laptops and always chose PCs over Macs.

Most notable was “Lauren”, a customer who after realizing Macs were far too expensive, bought a $699 Windows PC. “I’m just not cool enough to be a Mac person,” she said. Apple’s response? They announced lower prices and more economical models of their MacBook Pro line at Macworld 2009. But that’s not all.

Information Week reports that Microsoft received a phone call from Apple’s legal department, asking that the ads be pulled. “‘Hey, you need to stop running those ads, we lowered our prices,'” Microsoft COO Kevin Turner quoted. “It was the single greatest phone call in history that I’ve ever taken in business.”

What’s next in the eternal struggle between Apple and Microsoft? According to PC World, Microsoft announced plans to open Microsoft stores, similar to the Apple stores already seen in malls. Where in the malls? “Right next door to Apple,” says Turner.

Primetime Emmy Nominations Announced

emmy--awardThe nominees for the 61st annual Primetime Emmy Awards were announced this morning in Los Angeles by Grey’s Anatomy star Chandra Wilson, Big Bang Theory‘s Jim Parsons and Television Academy chair John Shaffner. Among the nominees were some past winners, some past nominees and a few who’ve never had the feeling of “Its just a thrill to be nominated.”

The real surprises were the nominations of both Family Guy and Flight of the Conchords in the “Outstanding Comedy” category, the nomination for Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog in the “Outstanding Special Class – Short-format Live-Action Entertainment Programs” category (Say that three times fast) as well as the 22 nominations for 30 Rock, which is an Emmy record.

A rules change expanded the number of comedy, drama and key acting category nominees from five to six for which intensified the competition for those extra slots. Ties in the voting actually yielded seven contenders in both series fields so the change in the rules ended up helping out more shows than originally intended. The 61st annual Primetime Emmy Awards will be broadcast on Sunday, September 20th at 8/7C on CBS and are hosted by Neil Patrick Harris.

Here’s the nominees in the major categories:

First Pics of Scarlett Johansson as ‘Black Widow’ in ‘Iron Man 2’

johansson-black-widow-iron-man-2Previously, we had the first picture of Mickey Rourke as “Whiplash” in Iron Man 2. And now, we’ve got a brand new picture of Scarlett Johansson suited up as Natasha Romanova’s alter ego Black Widow from the movie, courtesy of Entertainment Weekly. Not much really needs to be said about these pictures except the following: Scarlett Johansson, curly red hair, tight black catsuit, hot. I’ll let that sink in for a moment.

Along with the new pics, EW’s PopWatch has also posted excerpts from the interview that contained the pictures. The interview sheds some light on a few interesting elements of the project including Mickey Rourke’s character and the switch from Terrence Howard to Don Cheadle in the role of James “Rhodey” Rhodes. “Terrence and I couldn’t be more different,” said Cheadle. “We address it head-on in the movie in one exchange. We’re not trying to fool people.”

Also according to the report, Rourke’s character “creates his own battle-suit, which shoots devastating, whip-like beams” while incarcerated in a Russian prison. While this seems to confirm reports that Rourke’s “Vanko” character will be a mash-up of Crimson Dynamo and Whiplash, the report also touches on elements of a potential love triangle between Johansson, Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow’s Pepper Potts in the film. Must be nice to have two women like that fighting over you.

The Pull List Comic Reviews: ‘Blackest Night’, ‘Amazing Spider-Man’ and ‘Punisher’

A moderate week in terms of number of books shipped, mostly from the big two publishers, but definitely not moderate in terms of quality. With all the hype leading up to Blackest Night, it is no surprise it would be the first book I read this week, even beating out the much anticipated conclusion of the Spider-Man “American Son” storyline. As always, we can’t review every book each week here at The Pull List, but if you have any thoughts about other comics or think we missed a good one, let us know.

blackest-night-1-coverPull of the Week:

Blackest Night #1 – DC – $3.99

Score: 9.0

Big summer event. Months of hype. Tales that the writer has been planting seeds for the past five years for the main character. Sounds like a perfect set up for something to fall flat on its face. Thankfully this superstar creative team was able to avoid the trap that so many big crossover events often fall into. The first of eight issues of Blackest Night sets itself up perfectly for those not familiar with the history of the DC Universe. After an eerie message coming from the Black Hand and the emersion of the Black rings, the issue begins telling the tale of the yearly memorial day in honor of the superheroes who gave their lives to save the people of earth as well as those people that weren’t lucky enough to be saved.

The four Green Lanterns from Earth, Hal Jordan, John Stewart, Guy Gardner and Kyle Rayner, head to Coast City, a place that had been destroyed during a conflict between two villains that cost seven million their lives. Hal talks about the loss he had seen others experience on this day, including his other Green Lanterns. The book then weaves its way around the world to different locations, visiting various losses like Jonathan Kent, Ronnie Raymond and Arthur Curry. Back at the headquarters of the Justice League, Hal meets up with Barry Allen, who is dealing with his recent resurrection, and finding out the fates of those who had been lost while he was gone until they are interrupted by a friend who has uncovered an unearthed grave.

Back on Oa, the Guardians watch their failures as the war of light erupts around the universe. The Guardians ready to call the entire Green Lantern Corps until things break down for them as well. At this point, the Black Rings start flying around the universe including to the Black Lantern that people had seen coming for months, Martian Manhunter who goes to Hal and Barry, declaring they should both be dead. The book concludes with another surprise attack which leads to the creation of two new Black Lanterns.
