With the last season of Smallville off to a rollicking good start, we snatched up the chance to sit down with Smallville long-time executive producers Kelly Souders and Brian Peterson. While they were a touch shy about spilling the Kryptonite on this season’s surprises, we never-the-less used our super strength to investigate the return of former cast members and historic episode 200 (set to air October 15th).
It seems this season will be strewn with super heroes and villains from across the galaxy. Giving Kal-El a run for his money, Laura Vandervoort returns in brilliant blue and red style as Supergirl in episode 3, airing October 8th.
The Flickcast: Can you tell us about any plans to bring back favorite cast members from past seasons?
Brian Peterson: Having Annette O’Toole back as Martha Kent and Michael McKean as Perry White- we worked all season to get that to happen. It was fantastic, they were so great, it was such a great episode.
We’d like to, it’s hard because all of these actors, it’s not always up to us, like they have TV shows and careers and theater. You know Glover, we would love to have John Glover back and that man is on Broadway from the beginning of the year until the end of the year.
So, that’s our goal, absolutely, to try to get people like Perry, and Martha Kent, and Lionel Luther back, or at least maybe an appearance.
FC: Last season, Smallville‘s epic episode entitled, “Absolute Justice”, featured the monumental members of the Justice Society. Any talk of a Justice Society spin-off series? Will any members of the Justice Society be making future appearances this season?
BP: I know people are so excited about that and right now, to my knowledge, there are not (spin-off series). I think there’s always opportunities.
But as far as episodes, we’re definitely going to have some of the Justice Leaguers and Justice Society people back in the show for sure (check out episode 2). But as far as a spin-off, I wish that was something I could see into the future and know, but I don’t know.
FC: Elise Gatien played a spunky Speedy/Mia Dearden last season. Any plans to bring her back as Green Arrow’s sidekick?
BP: I will say, we wanted to go and promised that we would go in a couple directions with Speedy. But we literally, by the end of this season couldn’t fit it in. So we would love to explore that territory again. I don’t know that it will happen, but we would love to.
FC: Birds of Prey is one of my favorite comic book series. Will Birds of Prey ever be mentioned on Smallville and/or will the Black Canary make a repeat appearance?
BP: Well, obviously there’s kind of a final beat with Black Canary and the Green Arrow that we would love to kind of hit. But a lot of that again, you know Alaina (Huffman) is on a show and has a lot going on. So we would love to explore that, I tell you, if I had all the power to do it, I’d want them to do it.
FC: I know a lot of people miss Lana Lang, any word on if Kristin Kreuk be coming back?
BP: We would love to have Kristin back but like a lot of the other actors she’s very busy. So we have some thoughts, the door’s open, we would love to have her back. Right now, that hasn’t happened or worked out. But we want her back, we love her, we love Kristin.
FC: It is a superhuman feat anytime a TV show makes it to episode 200. Can you share any details on this upcoming event airing on October 15th?
BP: It’s going to be really fun. Kelly (Souders) and I wrote it and it’s kind of the touchstone of what we’re dong for the bigger scene this year. We explore the past, the present, and a little bit of the future. So, we get to kind of touch on some memories and some nostalgia.
But as soon as we do that, we kind of explode into some things that nobody’s ever seen on the show. There’s a couple epic moments that’s also really fun and romantic. I really don’t think people will be disappointed- I’m hoping.
FC: James Marsters rocked it in the role of ultimate baddie, Brainiac in season 8. Will he be leaving the 31st century anytime soon?
Kelly Souders: Yeah, he will actually be in the 200th episode. He’ll be coming back as Brainiac 5… So it will be kind of a, sort of an old villain and a new villain all in one. It’s hard to explain. It’s really cool.
There were things that we really wanted to encapsulate it the 200th. And we literally, we’re sitting around for days going, OK how can you get all these pieces together?
Then suddenly Brainiac 5 was a topic and then everything fell into place. Literally in one day the whole thing, the rest of it broke- it was really amazing. So, stay tuned.

Thanks Kelly, I couldn’t have said it better myself. So although there’s few definite answers, Kelly Souders and Brian Peterson have given us something Superman symbolizes the most- hope.
Stay glued to The Flickcast as we continue to unravel Smallville’s epic mythology and talk to more super cast members.

January 18, 2011 at 3:30 amOne character they just need is Batman, yes ik the word bat-embargo “too expensive” well if they can get Superman in the brave and the bold than why not Batman or “continuity confusion with Nolans film” you know what last season by the time Dark Knight Rises comes out Smallville will be over no different than watching an old Adam West Show, they need to do it they have so many other heroes

October 6, 2010 at 3:03 am[…] October 1, 2010 at 8:35 pm“Chloe is hopefully going to end on the winning team in love for the first time” – Kelly Souders about Chlollie…
More lie? …

October 1, 2010 at 5:38 amI can not stand Brian and Kelly … they cheat us so much … talk about how much love Chlollie, and hopefully expect a happy ending for them … and then mention Green Arrow with Black Canary? That is sad …
Monicareis78
October 1, 2010 at 5:34 amReally? First you talk about love Chlollie, and how much you love him, only to mention the Black Canary with Green Arrow, who did little for the show? I wish they seem to deceive us

October 1, 2010 at 12:57 amplease ratings was better then they ever have been before she came back and the one lois came back for after her had better ratings then kk last eps.they made clark look like a boy again how his ever going to be superman when he looks like boy when lana is around him lois makes him look like a man not a boy.
Marcus Crawford
October 1, 2010 at 11:13 amThe ratings have dropped since Kristin left though starting from Season 8.
Also all they do is flaunt Lois. The same way you Clois fans complain about Lana, the same way one can argue that they place too much emphasis on Lois and not Clark. How does Lois make him feel like a man? What kinda shipper drivel nonsense are you on about?
SmallLuvit
October 14, 2010 at 2:30 amRight on Crawford! How does Lois go from this strong independent character who is just hanging all over Clark like a raggedy sweat shirt. She’s all needy and wants to open up about her feelings. This is making Smallville SUCK! Kristin and Tom just had a beautiful chemistry and they look beautiful together as the seasons went on whether they were broken up or on their way back together. I just loved watching season two when they finally admitted their feelings to one another. I’ll always loved the PAST seasons. This season is going into darkness and confusion. Bring back Michael and Kristin!!! Break the rules. Clark and Lana together at the end, not Lois. That’s the way it should be.

September 30, 2010 at 10:17 pmKK is their ratings grabber,so i highly doubt they won`t let her have anything to say for her storyline if that can bring her back.
kevin
September 30, 2010 at 8:46 pmif kk comes back and you want the clark and lana to happen again for the love of god dont build the clois up the first half just to kill it at the end. as a clois fan and as much as i love clois but if i have to see bride part 2 i want buy the box set at the end of the show.so some resepct to clois fans.and do not and i mean do not let kk have say in the way she wants it done and if you let her have say in it then go back to video at cc and show the same reaspct to ed because she has stated that she wants lois to end up with clark.and since ed stayed with the show and did not jump ship like others have let her opion come first not kk.

September 30, 2010 at 8:21 pmI really hope to see Lana again. I love Lana’s character and Kristin made a great job. Lana was persecuted for Clois and Chlarks fans all the time, and Kristin deserve respect for her work.

September 30, 2010 at 7:19 pmI hope they dont do that. I dont know … i just get the feeling their going to show glimpses of the future when their married and stuff, then end the show with her ‘forgetting everything’
