'Spartacus: Blood and Sand' Season 2 Potentially Delayed

‘Spartacus: Blood and Sand’ Season 2 Potentially Delayed

Andy Whitfield

Here at The Flickcast there is near unanimous love for the Starz Spartacus: Blood and Sand series. With its blatant gladiator-driven homo-eroticism, 300-level gore, violence and the treacherous characters whose destinies are tied to the sands of the Roman Arena of Capua and the House of Batiatus, there’s something for everyone.

Unfortunately, Spartacus lead Andy Whitfield has been diagnosed with a treatable form of non-Hodgkin Lymphoma, which leaves fans wondering just how Starz will handle Andy’s indefinite leave from the show while he is in treatment. A recent statement from Starz Entertainment indicates that it will postpone production on season 2, titled ‘Spartacus: Vengeance,’ while Whitfield undergoes cancer treatments.

Show writer Maurissa Tancharoe, elaborates via Twitter: “The second season is still happening; however, it is on hold at the moment due to star Andy Whitfield’s health problems.” Another tweet seemed to reassure fans that season 2 is definitely not cancelled declaring, “Season two of #Spartacus has NOT been cancelled. Don’t know where that rumor came from.”

Rumors have also surfaced that a prequel series could be under way with a younger actor filling Whitfield’s role as Spartacus, but it’s not clear if Lucy Lawless and John Hannah will be starring in that as well. NY Magazine seems to be confirming that Starz will be developing a 6-episode mini-series prequel to keep momentum going with the show’s nearly one million weekly viewers. Whatever happens, we wish Andy Whitfield a speedy recovery.

I hope he makes it!! He is a great actor!! I believe that series has set a precedent. I can’t believe these are the same creators that made Hercules and Zena back in the 90’s.

A personal comment to the actor andy whitfield. Andy i must admit until spartacus blood and sand i had never heard of you as i live in england. but i must tell you this my friend. you are without doubt one of the finest actors i have ever seen in any drama fromm either side of the pond. i my wife and my family and i am sure millions more wish you a speedy recovery and eagerly await your return as spartacus. a role you were born to play. god bless you.

I would just like to say that i live in england and we are in tv terms pretty much censored and over protected when it comes to making drama seem real over here. but i have just watched spartacus blood and sand season one and i have to say i think it is the best thing i have ever watched to come from the usa., bloody brilliant in every detail. i studied roman history and i have never seen a depiction of how things really were that hit the mark until now. i applaud the actors all of them each and every one gave a performance worthy of numerous awards and the special effects were outstanding. you have restored my faith in american dramas and i will eagerly await season 2 and all others with baited breath. BRILLIANT BRILLIANT BRILLIANT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Amazing show. Loved it. best thing ive watched in years. It was crude. Vulgar. Aggresive. very easily caught my eye. Batiartus and his wife didnt survive. I think the sequel will be about him getting back at the legatus. Him and his wife survived. I cant wait for season 2. Ill eagerly await for it to come out on netflix so i can watch it whenever.

    July 30, 2010 at 12:35 pm

Somebody quite knowledgable in these things tells me Batiatus and his wife survived the breakout. For all it made good TV, if you wanted to retain Lawless and Hannah you should have gone with historical accuracy. Even though there wouldn't be much point setting series 2 around Batiatus and his wife since Spartacus and his men were encamped on Mt. Vesuvius after their escape.

I'll probably skip the prequel due to my hatred for all things “spin-off”. Absolutely love series 1, however. It's the best things I've seen on TV since The Sopranos.

I gotta say, I didnt catch any of it when I had stars, but I just watched the entire first season in a few days on netflix. …… OMFG!!! WOW!! Awsome show!! I'm a serious history buff (which is why I didnt watch it on stars, historical type shows are dissapointing usualy) and this is the best ancient history show ever by far. And oohhh the decadence!! WOOOOHOOOO!!!! Love it!!
