Okay, Spider-Man: Friend or Foe wasn’t exactly an impressive showing for the mighty Marvel franchise. It was actually pretty much a kids game when it comes down to it. Spider-Man: Web of Shadows however reignited the Spider-Man franchise with more grounded gameplay reminiscent of the style and strategy used in Spider-Man 2 and Ultimate Spider-Man.
Now, right before E3, Activision has unofficially had some screens leak for the third dimension of Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions, the next iteration of the franchise. Already revealed have been the Amazing universe featuring Kraven the Hunter as its villain and the Noir universe with the Goblin and Hammerhead as the lead antagonists. Now, it looks like the world of Spider-Man 2099 will be featured in a game for the first time.
For those who don’t know, the 2099 world came about in the mid-nineties with visions of Spider-Man, Doom, the X-Men and various other characters who were based on historic entities from the Age of Heroes. The longest running of this line was Spider-Man 2099 who encountered future versions of the Vulture and Venom in his tenure. Miguel O’Hara, Spider-Man 2099’s alter ego, has made various recent appearances in Marvel comics while others from this period have been forgotten.
In addition to the ill-fated Timestorm 2099 crossover, Spider-Man 2099 was also a part of one of the final teams of the Exiles in the first volume of the series.
Take a look below at some of the leaked screens of what could be in store in this imperfect future version of Spider-Man. Though no villain has been revealed yet, it is likely to be one that was featured in the events of the Spider-Man 2099 comic, much like the Goblin and Hammerhead were in the Noir series.
As mentioned earlier, both Venom 2099 and the Vulture 2099 are distinct possibilities. Other notable villains and anti-heroes that could be seen are Doom 2099, Hulk 2099, Punisher 2099 and the Ghost Rider 2099.
Even after seeing these great screens, one question still remains. What will be the FINAL dimension to be revealed? My prediction, House of M Spider-Man. This is a completely different version of the Spider-Man character. Set in a world where everyone is a mutant and he is actually loved by the public since they think he is one, Spider-Man is a fraud whose secret is at risk of being exposed and his celebrity life ruined.
Other options include, Spider-Girl from the MU2 world as well as the Marvel Zombies version where Spidey gets to chow down on Aunt May and Mary Jane before seeing the error of his brain munching ways.
