As reported by CBS Boston, the former Red Sox pitcher who won the ALCS with a bloody sock and former founder of 38 Studios will have his estate on sale this weekend. In addition to items from his seven bedroom and 8,000 square-foot home, items from 38 Studios will be on sale as well. The sale which is managed by Consign Works will feature a 38 Studios drafting table as well as various posters related to Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning. The sale will take play on Saturday October 12th from 8 AM to 4 PM.
38 Studios will also have a liquidation auction next month which will include IP from Amalur. As a universe this includes the MMO assets for Project Copernicus, sequel rights to Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning and merchandise and revenue rights associated with Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning. Additionally, Big Huge Game IP rights for Rise of Nations, Rise of Legends and Catan will also be on the auction block.
38 Studios went belly up and had to declare bankruptcy back in the summer of 2012 despite a solid reception and decent sales for the new IP with Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning. This was a result of a $75 million loan from the state of Rhode Island to encourage the company to move from Massachusetts. In the end, it ended up being a losing proposition as Schilling was stuck with a debt of $50 million he was forced to repay out of pocket.
While what happened to Curt Schilling and the state of Rhode Island was a terrible affair and we hope this sale helps him get back on his feet to where he should be, we are also optimistic about the future of the Amalur series. Hopefully even if Curt isn’t a part of it, at least the world that he, R.A. Salvatore and Todd McFarlane all crafted together can continue to live on.
