Alex O'Loughlin To Star In 'Hawaii Five-O' Remake

Alex O’Loughlin To Star In ‘Hawaii Five-O’ Remake

We have to admit, nobody at The Flickcast offices were really happy when news broke that CBS would be remaking Hawaii Five-0. Then we heard some of the names that are coming along with it.

Not only are Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, the hottest sci-fi writing team working today, helping create the new series, but LOST star Daniel Dae-Kim is also attached as Detective Chin Ho Kelly, and now Moonlight’s Alex O’Loughlin is set to take the lead.

The idea for a reboot of the long running cop drama has been bounced around the halls of CBS for nearly two years. The studio originally got excited for the idea back in 2008, but dropped it for lack of interest in the pilot script.

Then, back in October, they were approached by Kurtzman, Orci, and CSI: NY showrunner Peter Lenkov, and loved the idea. O’Loughlin won over a huge fan base after his work on the short-lived Moonlight, and then continued on a few other series.

The actor is currently attached to the lead role of Detective Steve McGarrett, first made famous by Jack Lord.

The original show ran over the span three decades, starting in 1968 and ending in the spring of 1980. The original plot surrounded an elite branch of the Hawaii State Police, run by McGarrett.

A remake of the series may actually work today, considering the formula of most police drama’s and their success rate. Most of the shows focus around a location (CSI: NY, Miami) or focus on a main character who’s loyal yet walks the line of “procedural” and “renegade” (David Caruso, Gary Sinise).

Between that formula, and the team of Orci and Kurtzman writing the pilot, this show could most definitely have legs.

I think Alex O’laughlin is a talented actor and if any one can pull the new show off, it will be him. I know that I will be watching!

Oh, come on you naysayers and get on the ball! Any of you prattling on about Jack Lord and the ancient 70’s show should know that all sorts of new “bells and whistles” on the 2010 show should bring it in to the 21st century and a LOT more excitement=== “Fan Base” I think a lot of the “oldies” have gone on to that big “fan base” in the sky and this will be a real hit of 2010!! I also hope and pray CBS will have the good sense to make great drama and stories that involve us with the characters. everyone love s good story, old or new. Alex Your forever Fan Suzanne

Being a huge fan of the original series I have to strongly agree with all the other comments.
It would be nice to see it work, but there is such a big fan base and you cannot make the kind
of changes that they are doing and expect it to take off. HawIi Five-O was a great series mostly
due to the actors, The five o team worked well together and was due to Jack Lord. He
MADE that series work and there is no actor today that can do this. If CBS wants or expects
this new series to catch on then they need to cast their characters accordingly. They need to
keep Kono the same, have the new Danno talk to James Mc Arthurr, and cast good guest stars.
To tell the honest truth, the more CBS can keep the new series as close to the original series
the better chance they have of pulling it off.

Agreed. Rebooting Five-O will largely not work because you are ignoring a large fan base which already exists. I don’t predict this one lasting as long.

Having read the plotline,Dr. Tom you are almost right! Yes, the Governor is a female, Kono is NOW a female and, wait for it, Chin’s niece. Alex O’ make create his own interpretation, but sorry mate you will never be Jack Lord.

I’m sorry, but this is one re-boot I can’t get behind primarily because of the obvious directions the show will take. Here are my predictions: (1) Dan-O will be replaced by Dannette-O, a beautiful Hawaiian sidekick for McGarrett who will provide the necessary “sexual tension (and, yes, he will say “Book ’em, Dannette”); (2) The Chinese villain Wo-Fat will instead be some vaguely middle-eastern bad guy trying to smuggle a nuclear device into Hawaii in time for President Obama’s vacation; (3) the Governor will also be female, but Caucasian, and evil, who wants McGarrett fired, and, finally, (4) rather than have stories about people, culture, and situations, each and every episode will feature contemporary amounts of car chases, explosions, along with clothing, cars, and bling that the average cop could never afford. Oh, and let’s not forget the fact that the original theme song by The Ventures will undoubtedly be replaced by some 21st-Century Techno piece of crap version. Lord, take me now……
