Exclusive Interview: Cast of USA’s ‘Psych’ Talks Love Interests, More

We had the opportunity to sit down with the cast of USA’s hit show Psych about a police consultant with an uncanny ability to pick up clues, almost psychically, some would say.  This season the detectives have more on their minds then just solving wacky crimes and spotting pineapples.

With love blooming in the air for even the most skeptical (I’m talking to you Lassie), I decided to question the cast on their pursuit of romance.

The Flickcast: Can you tell us what your favorite episode to shoot was this season?

Timothy Omundson as Carlton “Lassie” Lassiter: We did an episode that James [Roday] directed, which he and Todd [Harthan, producer] wrote called, “This Episode Sucks”, it’s a vampire episode, but to me it’s important because it’s the Lassiter falls in love episode.

Lassiter gets a lady, his heart grows ten sizes and he falls in love for a character  played by the lovely and talent Kristy Swanson.  So that was amazing to get to play those other colors.

TF: Maggie Lawson who plays Juliet “Jules” O’Hara talked about how excited she is that her character and Shawn have taken a chance on a romantic relationship, and the challenges that come along with working it to the playful dynamic of the show.

Maggie Lawson: Sean and Juliet have been dancing around this romance for a long , long, long, time and now we’re in season 6. So you know, making that leap is always a little bit tricky with people on a show and especially when you have been working together for that long.

Again, I think the writer’s have done a really good job of keeping the show about Sean and Gus and  Juliet and Lassiter with this sort of romance worked in instead of it becoming all romance or all Sean and Jules.  They’re not going to hit you over the head with it, it’s very, very subtle.

But, there are a lot of strange dynamics going on as well because you know, Lassiter has to be Juliet’s number one when it comes to work- he just does. So, that’s going to get a little bit tricky with Sean, so it’s like any work-play-work relationship, you know, there’s some hurdles you have to get over.

TF: What would you like to see your character do that you haven’t done yet?

Dule Hill as Burton “Gus“ Guster: We’ve done so much, right now I’m really enjoying where we are.  I guess eventually I want to see him, I guess at some point, have at least some kind of thread of love for somebody, love experience.

Not for a whole season but at least for a couple of episodes.  But it’s been pretty rich so far, so I’m pretty happy with where we are.

The funny thing is, as an actor, I don’t normally do that- I don’t normally think about, you know, what would I like to see? The main thing was having him date, so now that he’s dating I’m pretty satisfied.

TF: What can you say about Gus’ chance for love this season?

Steve Franks, creator, writer and executive producer: Here’s the crazy thing that happened, Shawn and Juliet are finally together, Lassiter gets a girlfriend.  Everyone’s paired up, and Dule is left on his own.

So, Dule sort of accelerates his search for a lady and it’s sort of uh… he might be a little too over zealous, let’s just say.  We’re having a lot of fun with Dule trying very, very hard to find someone.  Ultimately we’ll get there.  But he’s got a long road to go before he gets that one.

About Diane Panosian

Today I seek a world in which women from across the land can unite in their geekiness. A land where Princess Lea reigns alongside her ever-rakish Han Solo, a growly Hugh Jackman can’t seem to find his flannel shirt, and Wonder Woman saves the world and comes home to find her man has baked cookies. It took me 20-odd years to figure out I am a writer. Apparently all those years in childhood spent pretending to be Lois Lane and writing mock newspapers never elicited one eureka. In high school I was editor of the school paper, but even then, I sought the path of a graphic artist. In my professional career I wrote numerous proposals for DVD and Blu-ray extra value content. Crafting concepts using Stan Lee-isms felt like play to me and yet I thought of myself as a producer. Not until one very rainy day when the streets were flooded and boredom hit me like Thor’s hammer did I call up Chris and tell him I wanted to write. I guess whatever gets your creative juices flowing while enduring the onslaught of boredom should be repeated. It didn’t take me nearly as long to figure out I was a geek. I was surrounded by my brother’s inked pages of Captain America from a very young age. I would often look for my beloved action figures only to find them captured by my brother for use as “inspiration”. Whenever he took a break I would sneak in and rescue my toys with the stealth of a mutated ninja cat. Strangely the next morning a new rescue mission would have to be hatched. From then on, I watched copious She-Ra and Spider-man cartoons, learned about alternate realities from Back to the Future, and read the soup opera that was X-Men comics in the 90’s.
