Box Office Report: ‘The Hunger Games’ Bowls a Turkey and Takes the Top Spot for the Third Strait Week

Yep, The Hunger Games wins again. The mega-hit has fended off the advances of two strong opponents to retain it’s Box Office crown for at least one more week. Bringing in over $33 Million dollars over the Easter weekend The Hunger Games now stands at over $300 Million in just three weeks.

The rest of the top three this week were dominated by 90’s nostalgia fare. Both came out with respectable numbers, especially considering the context of their release. Even still, neither could muster enough bank to truly challenge for the top spot.

Coming in at second was the fourth theatrical American Pie film, American Reunion. While it is true that its $ 21.5 Million dollar take is not very impressive compared to the previous films, the release of any R-Rated, raunchy comedy on Easter weekend is going to suffer. Considering that, and the bad will the franchise suffered from a long stretch of poor direct-to-DVD spin off films, you have to look at American Reunion as a win.

Third on the weekend tally was the 3D Re-Release of the second most successful film of all time. Titanic 3D pulled in just over $17 Million over the weekend, putting it’s 5-day total to a respectable $25.7 Million dollars. This total is more or less par for the 3D Re-Release course.

In case anyone was curious, that cool $25 mil still is no where near enough to get Titanic back in the lead for all time box office champ. There was an outside chance that it could catch Avatar with an big run before the summer, but now that idea is pretty much out the window.

Next week brings a large field of very unimpressive contenders for The Hunger Games crown. The three most notable new releases are The Cabin in the Woods, Lockout and The Three Stooges. None feel very much like a giant killer, but in reality all any film needs to do is get to $20 Million and the number 1 spot is likely theirs. If karma is a real thing, it would dictate a big weekend for The Cabin in the Woods and The Three Stooges would die a very John Carter-y death.

1 The Hunger Games $33,500,000
2 American Reunion $21,500,000
3 Titanic 3D $17,350,000
4 Wrath of the Titans $15,010,000
5 Mirror Mirror $11,000,000
6 21 Jump Street $10,200,000
7 Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax $5,000,000
8 Salmon Fishing in the Yemen $975,000
9 John Carter $820,000
10 Safe House $581,000
