Kickstarter Watch: ‘Kung Fury’

Kung Fury

Normally the Kickstarter Watch focuses on projects that are still in need of funding. This one is another kind of watch entirely since if you’ve been on YouTube over the past week, it’s been pretty much impossible to miss this one: Kung Fury.

Shot in a style very similar to that of YouTuber Mike Diva’s Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon: The Movie, Kung Fury is heavily 80’s inspired with everything from its Ghostbusters-esque power chord to filters on top of filters on top of filters and graphics that’d make the Lawnmower Man cry (one background graphic even looks like the loading screen from the video game version of Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon).

Kung Fu, Nazis, Hitler, Thor, a Viking girl with machine guns and dinosaurs. How could this not be awesome. In just over a week, this trailer has garnered just about 5,000,000 views on YouTube.

In the same amount of time, things have been a huge success on Kickstarter as well. More than doubling its $200,000 goal, Kung Fury is now taking aim at a feature film release. Originally slated for 30 minutes, the team at Laser Unicorns have decided to expand it out to feature length if they can hit the $1,000,000 mark. The Swiss team is depending on primarily CGI production to help keep their costs down but still bring the over the top spirit of the 80s to their end product.

The craziest part now as Laser Unicorns aim to reach their million dollar goal are the two highest priced levels of funding for Kung Fury ($10,000 to have a role in the film and $5,000 to be one of five Co-Producers) have both been filled. If they are planning on gearing up for a bigger budget, this might be the time to come up with a few more incentives to add in there.

Check out the trailer below for Kung Fury and head to their Kickstarter page if you want to help get them to their new stretch goal of $1,000,000.
