Genndy Tartakovsky Better Have Some Spinach Handy For His Next Feature

For those of you who follow animation, you know the name Genndy Tartakovsky. For those of you who simply like cartoons, you know the work of Genndy Tartakovsky, and everyone knows who Popeye the Sailor Man is. So in the mathematical equations of Hollywood, this is an odds on favorite to be a winner.

Tartakovsky has created some of the most renowned cartoons of his generation. From Dexter’s Laboratory, to Powerpuff Girls and Samurai Jack, his distinct style and flair for storytelling have made him a hit with fans. His first attempt at feature animation arrives later this year with Hotel Transylvania, which looks like it might have been saved by his magic talents.

Animation is a long process, so naturally he would get his next project lined up ahead of time, and that project has finally been announced. Variety is reporting that Tartokovsky will next be working on a big screen, animated Popeye:

Genndy Tartakovsky is attached to develop and direct “Popeye,” Sony Pictures Animation’s 3D take on the familiar sailor man… Avi and Ari Arad will produce under their Arad Productions banner with Sony Pictures Animation. As of November, scribes David Ronn and Jay Scherick were attached to pen the script.

The Variety report also reminds us that Tartakovsky is technically still attached to direct a feature Samurai Jack film. Hopefully that project doesn’t get lost under the impending successes he is about to enjoy.

The First Trailer For ‘Alex Cross’ Starring Tyler Perry Has Arrived

It is really unfair to be disappointed in a film because of bad casting luck early in its production. Alex Cross originally was meant to star the phenomenal Idris Elba as the titular detective, in what was supposed to be a more exciting and action oriented take on the character.

Then Mr. Elba had to back out and we got left with Tyler Perry. Now I don’t hate the films of Tyler Perry, I just never watch them. They are not made for me, so I don’t feel the urge to sit down with them. Perry was inoffensive enough in his brief role in Star Trek, so the news wasn’t immediately  loathsome.

Then this trailer hits, and all the regret and lament for what could have been comes rushing back. For the people who do not know what Alex Cross is all about, here is the synopsis:

After Washington DC detective Alex Cross is told that a family member has been murdered, he vows to track down the killer. He soon discovers that she was not his first victim and that things are now what they seem.

Despite the lead, the film has some fantastic actors, and the trailer makes it seem that most of them are on their A game.

Check out the new trailer after the jump.

HTC Droid Incredible 4G LTE Apparently Set to Launch On July 5th

After being announced during the CTIA event in early May, it looks like Verizon is finally getting around to launching a new smartphone that isn’t the Samsung Galaxy S III. That’s right HTC fans (myself among them), the Incredible 4G LTE is finally coming to a Verizon store near you.

The magical day is said to be July 5th, which has seemingly been confirmed by a screen cap of an internal Verizon’s website obtained by the folks over at Droid-Life. Pricing for the device looks to be $199 on 2-year contract, but there is still a chance that a $50 rebate will be attached, dropping the price to $149.

So, if this internal document is to be believed, we HTC and Sense 4 fans can pick up one of these beauties next week. Let’s hope it pans out because I, for one, would like to try one out.

New Trailer for Animated Film ‘Epic’ Isn’t Quite

First off, I love animated films. That’s not the problem here. The problem is that if you go to the trouble to call your animated film Epic, it better be in no uncertain terms.

And don’t get me started on those ads for movies promising the film will “take your breath away.” That never happens. Anyway, I digress.

There’s a new animated film from the creators of Ice Age and Rio and a new trailer. We’ve got that second one for you today. But first, a bit of story:

EPIC tells the story of an ongoing battle deep in the forest between the forces of good and the forces of evil. When a teen age girl finds herself magically transported into this secret universe, she must band together with a rag-tag team of fun and whimsical characters in order to save their world . . . and ours.

Check out the trailer after the break. Look for Epic to hit theaters on May 24, 2013.

Instagram for iPhone Gets An Update

Instagram, the very popular photo sharing app for iOS and Android, has recieved its first update since being aquired by Facebook earlier this year. The update, which brings the app to version 2.5, is more of a cosmetic update rather than bringing a slew of new features.

Some of the things the update does provide include a new Explore tab for browsing hashtags and usernames, search autocomplete and a revamped profile. Explore has also received a new navigational icon, as well as a search bar at the top of the screen for finding other users and hashtags.

Is This Google’s Galaxy Nexus Tablet?

Even though many people seem to prefer Apple’s iPad, that hasn’t stopped others from trying to make a competitive tablet to potentially dethrone the Cupertino giant. It seems Google is next to enter the fray directly with the much rumored Nexus tablet, which is reportedly to be unveiled during the company’s I/O conference this week. If so, what would said tablet look like and what would its capabilities be?

Well, it seems pictures and details surrounding the upcoming Google Nexus tablet have leaked and Gizmodo Australia has the scoop. According to the report, the “Nexus 7” tablet (no Nexus 6, bummer) will feature a 1.3Ghz quad-core Tegra 3 processor, a GeForce 12-core GPU, a 7-inch display, Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and 1GB of RAM.

In addition, the ASUS-built tablet will supposedly be two different models: an 8GB one for $199 and a 16GB one for $249. If so, that’s a price that’s sure to hurt sales of both the iPad and the already suffering Kindle Fire.

Things could get interesting indeed. We’ll see what happens on Wednesday.

A New Supersized Nintendo 3DS Coming To America Soon

Nintendo doesn’t sit on their laurels when it comes to their handhelds. Ever since the release Game Boy Pocket back in ’96, Nintendo can’t seem to go very long with out re-releasing and improving on their portable devices. Perhaps this ever evolving strategy is why, despite strong competition from Sony and smart phones, Nintendo has never fallen from the top of the portable gaming mountain.

It was reported that Nintendo was going to announce North American plans for the upcoming 3DS XL, but when nothing was said at their conference rumors began to spread that we might not see it officially in the states. In retrospect it was probably pretty dumb to think Nintendo wouldn’t release a new 3DS in the wake of the successful Vita launch last year.

This is an important time for Nintendo’s portable gaming division. The initial launch of the 3DS was underwhelming, and Sony’s Vita is the most impressive direct competition Nintendo has ever faced. In fact, for the first time since the SEGA Game Gear another company actually owns a respectable share of the market. A market that is shrinking in the age of smart phones and app store games providing much better value for gamers on the go.

For now Nintendo is still the king, and the launch of the 3DS XL should only solidify that. You can expect the newer, larger 3DS to hit shelves in North America August 19th, a few weeks after our Japanese and European brothers get their hands on it, July 28th.
