Microsoft to Buy Skype for $8.5 Billion

In what may be a good thing or a bad thing, today Microsoft  announced it will buy Skype for $8.5 billion in cash. This news comes just days after reports cam out that Facebook and Google were both interested in purchasing the online video chat company.

Microsoft said Skype will be used to support Xbox and Kinect, Windows Phone and other Windows devices. Microsoft also said it will connect Skype users with Outlook, Xbox Live and other software platforms.

“Together we will create the future of real-time communications so people can easily stay connected to family, friends, clients and colleagues anywhere in the world,” Microsoft’s CEO Steve Ballmer said in a statement.

Skype, which currently has 170 million users, will become a new business division at Microsoft with Skype’s current CEO Tony Bates taking on the role of president of the Microsoft Skype Division.

Trailer Tuesdays: From Sundance to Cannes

While there were plenty of large Summer blockbusters to preview this week, they all seemed to fall short on originality and just show us the same overdone action styles that have become popular over the past few years (Conan the Barbarian).  Instead, I thought it was the perfect time to do a spotlight on some of the more obscure independent films coming up, right in the middle of this year’s Sundance hits finding distributers and buzz beginning to form around the film showing at Cannes.

This week we have two breakout hits from Sundance, one disturbing foreign thriller premiering at Cannes, and a documentary that is food for your soul.

Martha Marcy May Marlene

Yes!  There is a third Olsen sister and she can act!  While this is only Elizabeth Olsen’s second feature since appearing that in Mary-Kate & Ashley videos as a kid, this film could definitely be a break-out role for her.

The other performance to watch in this trailer is from John Hawkes, an underrated but diverse actor that always delivers solid work in some great projects.  You may know him from his comedic role on HBO’s Eastbound and Down, or from his Oscar nominated role as Teardrop in Winter’s Bone last year.  This lesser-known cast could be set to become of the strongest ensemble performances of the year.

This film is going to be a hard one to miss, combining strong storytelling with powerful performances.  LA Weekly describes the film as “a triller that shifts nearly imperceptibly between dream, memory, and reality.”  The subtle psychological element of this trailer is sure to make for an intriguing film.

Film Review: ‘Hobo With A Shotgun’

Back in ’07, Robert Rodriguez and Quinten Tarantino joined forces for an ambitious theatrical experiment. Grindhouse was a double feature of exploitation films that ran together on a single ticket. Holding these two films together was a series of fake trailers that completed the retro marathon’s vintage experience.

The hype for this dirty celluloid love fest rose to some pretty serious highest, prompting a contest that capitalized on the fake trailer angle. Contestants were asked to create a fake grindhouse-esque trailer in a similar style to those that were going to appear in the movie. The eventual winner of this contest was director Jason Eisener and his entry Hobo With A Shotgun.

Winning in equal parts because of the absurd simplicity of it’s premise and the skill with which the Canadian director was able to recreate the esthetic of low budget ’70s era exploitation films, Hobo With a Shotgun became an instant fan favorite and talks began to surface about expanding the trailer into a full feature. Now 4 years (and one Rutger Hauer) later Hobo With a Shotgun is a full length feature that lives up to all of the promise the original trailer hinted at.

New Zombie Comedy ‘DeadHeads’ Goes International & Heads to Cannes

The world of the Horror-Comedy subgenre is a pretty hard egg to crack. Once the road was paved by Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead trilogy back in the late 80s, it has been very difficult for up and coming filmmakers to try to break ground and get away with the same charm and timelessness that the Evil Dead films have.

A brand new film that definitely has potential to join that club is DeadHeads, a road comedy with zombies that has heart and will get you to laugh pretty hard. The film was a hit at last week’s Newport Beach Film Festival, selling out two of its three screenings. Newport seems to just be the start for this film in its plan for global domination.

Word is now coming in that DeadHeads has been picked up Splendid Films for international rights (not something you normally see with an indie comedy) and will also be making its way to the Cannes Film Festival. Here’s the synopsis:

The story follows two zombie slackers, Mike and Brent, who find themselves surprisingly reborn from the dead amid a disastrous zombie outbreak. After discovering an engagement ring in his coat pocket, Mike enlists his new found zombie pal, Brent, to embark on a quest in search of his lost love. What ensues is a hilarious cross country road trip as these two reformed flesh-eating pals hitchhike cross country as they are pursued by a team of zombie killin’ bounty hunters!

See exactly what we’re talking about with the brand new international trailer after the jump. Visit DeadHeadsTheMovie.com for more news as these zombies hit the road to Cannes.

Comedy Central Runs Out of Ideas, Plans To Roast Kid Rock

After you roast the likes of Flava Flav, Pamela Anderson, Larry the Cable Guy, David Hasselhoff, and Donald Trump, where can Comedy Central possibly go from there? How about taking on Detroit-based white rapper turned americana rock star turned balladeer Kid Rock?

That’s exactly what they have planned this August, as the people who brought us the First Annual Comedy Awards are planning on a celebrity roast to honor the rocker on hist 40th birthday.

NEW YORK, May 9, 2011 – COMEDY CENTRAL announced today that Kid Rock is set to join the likes of Donald Trump, David Hasselhoff and Pamela Anderson as COMEDY CENTRAL’s next Roastee.  During Kid Rock’s illustrious career as a performer, there has yet to be a single audience that could prepare the five-time Grammy nominee for the vicious onslaught of sharp barbs that will be thrown his way when he takes center stage for the “COMEDY CENTRAL Roast Of Kid Rock.”

The event is currently scheduled to tape on August 14th and will air shortly thereafter. No announcements have been made as to which celebrity roasters will make an appearance, but you can expect the usual gang, and probably an appearance by current touring partner Sheryl Crow.

Just When You Thought It Was Over, Check Out a New Trailer for ‘Final Destination 5’

It seems that above all others, horror is the one franchise in which it’s culturally acceptable to release as many sequels as possible. Even superhero films, which are one of the highest grossing movie genres to date, has only gone to 3 or 4 films before ending or rebooting a franchise. Not horror. Films like Saw, Friday the 13th, Toxic Avenger, and countless others keep getting cranked out.

One of those franchises still cranking is New Line’s Final Destination. Starting in 2000, the franchise is now hitting it’s fifth (and probably not final) film in this August. Here’s the breakdown.

In “Final Destination 5,” Death is just as omnipresent as ever, and is unleashed after one man’s premonition saves a group of coworkers from a terrifying suspension bridge collapse. But this group of unsuspecting souls was never supposed to survive, and, in a terrifying race against time, the ill-fated group frantically tries to discover a way to escape Death’s sinister agenda.

Lots more “accidental yet creative” deaths, some more cringe-worthy tension, and the return of Tony Todd! Check it all out in the newest trailer for Final Destination 5 — or as we like to call it FIVEnal Destination.
