Marvel Comics On Sale This Week

That’s right comic book fans, it’s that time of the week again. New comics are coming out from our friends at Marvel and we’ve got some particular ones we’re interested in.

Among the new ones coming out, we’re looking forward to reading Cyclops #1, Kick-Ass #2, Scarlet #5, Wolverine #7, and Secret Avengers #11.

As with most weeks, new comics arrive on Wednesday, so hit your nearest comics book store early for best selection.

FX Gives ‘Justified’ a Third Season

It’s nice when good, quality shows get the treatment they deserve. In this case the show in question is Justified, which airs on FX.

Today, the network announced it is renewing the series, which features Timothy Olyphant as a crusading yet morally ambiguous U.S. Marshall, and giving it a third season on the network. According to the report, FX bosses were pleased with the show’s performance overall, even though its taken a little ratings dip this season.

In spite of the dip, the series is still ahead of Season 1 and has emerged as a DVR winner, getting a 55%-60% ratings bump from time-shifted viewing. Season-to-date, the drama has averaged 4 million viewers for its original Wednesday 10 PM telecasts.

Great news for a great show. If you haven’t had a chance to check it out, you should.

In related news, FX is also reportedly close to a renewal for another cool show you should be watching: the animated spy comedy Archer. More on that as it comes to us. In the meantime, kudos to FX for recognizing quality and for sticking with it.

Official Poster for ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II’ Released

The final flick from the long-running Harry Potter series hits theaters this summer and the official Facebook page is abuzz following the release of the official movie poster. The 7th movie in the ‘Potter’ series wraps up the events contained in the final novel by J.K. Rowling entitled Deathly Hallows, having been split into two parts to better do justice to the dark and dangerous tale.

The end begins as Harry, Ron, and Hermione go back to Hogwarts to find and destroy Voldemort’s final horcruxes, but when Voldemort finds out about their mission, the biggest battle begins and life as they know it will never be the same again.

Directed by British filmmaker David Yates (Order of the Phoenix, Half-Blood Prince) and with a script written by Steve Kloves (Sorcerer’s Stone, Chamber of Secrets, Prisoner of Azkaban, Goblet of Fire, Half-Blood Prince), Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows: Part 2 arrives in theaters everywhere on July 15th.

Takashi Miike’s Newest Film, ’13 Assassins’, Gets A Trailer

Takashi Miike is one of the greats. Aside from being ripped off by Quentin Tarantino for the past 15 years, he’s been a top director in the world of Kung Fun cinema for over 20 years, with over 80 titles, including Ichi the Killer and Sukiyaki Western Django, under his belt.

Now, domestic studios have gotten wise to his popularity and vision and his newest film, 13 Assassins, will be getting an American theatrical release. Here’s the official synopsis:

Cult director Takeshi Miike (Ichi the Killer, Audition) delivers a bravado period action film set at the end of Japan’s feudal era in which a group of unemployed samurai are enlisted to bring down a sadistic lord and prevent him from ascending to the throne and plunging the country into a wartorn future.

The film is getting a wide theatrical release on April 29th, so be sure to check it out when it hits theaters. In the meantime, we’ve got a new trailer for you after the jump.

Amazon Announces ‘Cloud Drive’ Music Service

Today, Amazon became the first player in the cloud music game with the announcement of its cloud-based music storage service known as Cloud Drive. The new offering will allow users to store up to 5GB of music in Amazon’s new, online locker and playback uploaded tracks via their Android smartphone, Android tablet, Mac, or PC.

In addition, users who purchase a complete album via Amazon’s MP3 store will automatically be upgraded to 20GB of storage, free of charge, and tracks purchased on Amazon are automatically uploaded to the cloud. In other words, purchased tracks do not count towards your storage quota. Nice.

Music isn’t the only digital thing you can store in your Cloud Drive. You can also upload photos and other files directly to it through the web interface. Seeing this you have to wonder what cloud storage based offering such as Dropbox are going to think about it. Although, you can’t share files or folders with other users. At least not yet.

You can play your stored music using the Cloud Player for Web or for Android devices. Not surprisingly, there’s no Cloud Player app for iOS devices. If you’re worried that 5GB of storage just won’t be enough for your music collection, extra storage can be had with plans starting at $20 per year.

AMC Officially Gives ‘Mad Men’ Another Season

In a rather bold move AMC has decided to officially greenlight a fifth season of its Emmy-winning, flagship series Mad Men without a deal in place for creator/exec-producer Matt Weiner. The network is exercising its option with the series’ producer Lionsgate TV and work will start on the new season shortly.

While this may seem bold, and it is, it’s not unprecedented. In fact, AMC did the exact same thing two years ago when it was almost in the exact same position and negotiations with Weiner were dragging on. Sadly, even thought his may seem like good news for Mad Men fans, there’s at least one bit of bad. Because of the still unresolved negotiations with Weiner, the premiere of Season 5 is being pushed from the Summer to early 2012.

Here’s the full statement from AMC: “AMC has officially authorized production of season 5 of Mad Men, triggering our option with Lionsgate. While we are getting a later start than in years past due to ongoing, key non-cast negotiations, Mad Men will be back for a fifth season in early 2012.”

While some may slam Weiner for holding things up the delay isn’t all about money, at least not directly for him. His part of the deal is reportedly already in place, which would make him the highest paid showrunnner on TV with close to $30 Million for two years. The delay has more to do with creative elements of the show.

Fan Film: ‘Angry Birds: The Movie’

It’s fun when we can laugh about a totally unreal scenario where a popular iPhone or Android video game gets adapted into a big budget film. Unfortunately, the window between us laughing at a satirical fan trailer and the film getting actually produced is quite small.

While we’ve got the time, we can still laugh at what the guys at Rooster Teeth (the folks who made Red Vs. Blue one of the most popular things amongst boys 18-35) put together in honor of the popular strategy game featuring birds and green pigs.

Some great cinematic spoofs in here as well, as Michael Bay and just about any disaster movie of the 90’s is a target in this short but sweet fan film.

Summit Bringing Zombie Romance ‘Warm Bodies’ To Theaters

Zombies are hot right now–strike that, warm. Zombies are warm right now.

At least, that’s what Summit Entertainment believes, as they’re adapting the very recent book by Isaac Marion titled Warm Bodies, a romantic zombie thriller. The studio is so keen on the idea, that they’re about half way done with the lead casting. From THR:

Teresa Palmer, who received a lot of notice for her breakout work in I Am Number Four, is in talks to star opposite Nicholas Hoult in Summit’s zombie love story Warm Bodies.

Jonathan Levine is directing the project, which, in a tone described as Twilight meets Shaun of the Dead, follows an existentially tormented zombie named R that begins an unlikely friendship with the human girlfriend (Palmer) of one of his victims. The blossoming relationship starts a chain reaction that will transform him, his fellow zombies and maybe the whole lifeless world.

Summit seems to know their romanticized monsters, as they’ve gotten the whole Twilight world locked down inside of two films. What’s next? Werewolves in heat? Only time will tell.
