Game Review: ‘Mafia 2’ for PlayStation 3

Sometimes it’s good to be bad. 2K games makes you an offer you can’t refuse with their recent release, Mafia 2. Transport yourself to Empire City, a pseudo-New York City of the 40’s and 50’s, for a gritty adventure of betrayal and violence.

Gameplay:

Mafia 2 plays a lot like a standard open world third person action adventure game. You drive or walk to missions. The missions are linear so you don’t get much distraction from the story. The problem with this type of build is that the missions start becoming redundant. Go save this guy, drive here, go kill that guy. No real side missions. No decision making.

You can go anywhere but there unfortunately isn’t much to do outside of the storyline based missions. You can make money by stealing cars or robbing shops. You can buy new clothes, get your car washed, or get your car souped-up.

This gathering of wealth and buying of material things isn’t very useful as the game makes you restart with nothing due to various plot points throughout the game. This unfortunately leads to an uneventful experience when not in the missions.

There are also collectibles that can be found throughout the game. Playboy magazines are hidden through out the levels, and are time sensitive, which means if you missed them the first time you were in an area they will disappear and they can later appear in areas you already visited.

Wanted poster collectibles are not time sensitive and can be found hidden in back alleys, on fences and behind buildings. There are no in game benefits that I can discern, but you can view them in your gallery.

‘Splice’ Meets ‘Terminator: Salvation’ In The First Trailer for ‘Jim’

Last year, Niell Blomkamp’s District 9 changed how major studios looked at small science fiction projects. Before, ideas like “aliens in a dystopian future” were mostly reserved for direct-to-video productions. But now more and more studios are investing in scripts like these, hoping to ride the Avatar or District 9 success. Enter Jim.

The story behind Jim can be considered a little complicated, to say the least, so try to stay with the official synopsis, because it takes an interesting turn in the middle.

Being steadily crushed under the weight of debt, unemployment, and increasing isolation, Jim reaches a breaking point. Over a game of solitary Russian roulette he contemplates an unspeakable act of violence as a way of leaving his mark. He is stopped short by a vision of his deceased wife who convinces him that he should instead focus his remaining resources into an act of creation. Armed with his wife’s frozen eggs and a new resolve, Jim secures the services of a large biotech firm to help him create an heir who will be engineered to overcome the obstacles of common men.

Meanwhile in the distant future Niskaa, the leader of a group of genetically modified beings, controls a race of worker clones in a super-industrialized, post-human Earth. As he tries to restore his decrepit empire he comes face to face with a young clone that shows an unprecedented capacity for reason and empathy. Somehow connected to Jim via dreams, the clone manifests secrets of Nature that Niskaa has not accounted for…

The film comes from first-time writer/director Jeremy Morris-Burke, and looks like it could just be a new era for independent science fiction films. Check out the first trailer after the jump. Catch Jim in NY and LA theaters on October 8th and 16th.

Box Office: Affleck’s ‘Town’ Cleans Up

Two new movies had robust openings, while a third couldn’t find any traction at the box office this weekend.

Ben Affleck’s latest movie  The Town was warmly received, exceeding most industry expectations and winning the weekend box office with over $23.8 million. The film received great reviews, and audiences gave the film a solid B+ grade on Cinemascore.

The last time Affleck directed a movie (Gone Baby Gone) it did not earn that much during its entire theatrical run.  He is definitely a rising directing talent.

Emma Stone proved that she can open a movie, as Easy A earned $18.2 million. The film had a reported budget of only $8 million, so from here on out its earnings are pure profit. Easy A also got high marks from audiences, scoring an A- on Cinemascore.

Despite having an intriguing premise, Devil failed to connect with audiences, although it did manage to make $12.5 million. Devil is the first movie in a trilogy “from the mind of M. Night Shyamalan” called Night Chronicles.  The second movie is underway, and  Daniel Stamm (The Last Exorcism) has been hired to direct.

Sad news indeed as it seems Spartacus: Blood and Sand star Andy Whitfield won’t be able to return to the show for its second season due to health complications. According to Starz, the network which produces the show, the actor’s doctors have advised him to stop training for season two of the series and seek immediate, aggressive treatment for his illness.

Review: ‘The Town’

In 2007, Ben Affleck resurrected a career that was on a downward trajectory by writing and directing Gone Baby Gone, a movie that garnered a Best Actress Oscar nomination for Amy Ryan. After appearing in a string of flops and fueling tabloid flames with his romance with J-Lo, Affleck wisely chose to stay strictly behind the camera; he never appeared in the film. The film received  universal praise, and critics hailed Affleck as promising director.

With the release of The Town, Affleck can either cement his reputation as a quality filmmaker, or he can fall victim to the sophomore slump we so often see talented directors experience. Fortunately, The Town is good enough to silence naysayers. It mines completely different territory than the quiet Gone Baby Gone, but it is a quality movie in its own right.

The Town plays more like an straight action film, and lacks the contemplative nature of Affleck’s first movie, but it is taut, well acted, and well directed. The film takes place in Charlestown, a suburb of Boston.  Charlestown has earned the dubious honor of being the bank robbery capital of the world. The town has cultivated a  crime syndicate capable of hitting a robbery  target with surgical precision.

Best Buy CEO Says iPad ‘Cannibalizing’ Laptop Sales

How long will it be before we stop using the word laptop? And really, who wants a Netbook? Well, if these recent comments by Best Buy CEO Brian Dunn are taken into consideration, we might have to get used to the word, and to using, an iPad instead.

In a recent interview with the Wall Street Journal, Dunn remarked that the iPad “had cannibalized sales from laptop PCs by as much as 50%.” That’s a pretty impressive number when you consider that Best Buy doesn’t even sell iPads in every one of its stores.

If you think about it it sorta makes sense though. For myself and many of my colleges, a laptop is a second computer that they use on the road. Or, they have a laptop for the kitchen or the living room for the kids and still rely on a desktop computer, or in my case an iMac, to get the real work done.

The iPad is the perfect casual computer that can fulfill most of the roles of the traditional laptop. You can browse the internet, check your email, watch movies and TV shows, read books, play games and much more all while using a cool and innovative device. Couple that with the ridiculously long battery life of the iPad when compared to most laptops and I think you’ll start to see why this is happening.

The iPad can almost completely replace the laptop for most people. And once Best Buy is featuring the device in all of its 1093 stores, which it’s expected to do by September 26th, you can bet we’ll see that number rise even higher.
