The Flickcast – Page 702 of 1030 – Stuff Nerds Love

Get a Sneak Peek At the New ‘Hawaii Five-O’

As reboots go, CBS’s update of the show Hawaii Five-O is actually one I’m kinda looking forward to. Sure, I also wish networks could come up with more original ideas instead of looking to the past and updating shows that have already been around. But I guess you can’t have everything.

Like some of CBS’s other shows, Five-O is a police procedural which takes the concept in a slightly new direction without making it completely different. It’s familiar without being a complete retread and manages to be somewhat fresh take on things.

It also includes lush tropical settings, car chases, gunfights and an appealing cast which includes Alex O’Laughlin, Scott Caan, Grace Park and Daniel Dae Kim. Will the show succeed? Perhaps. Fortunately, the cast manages to uplift the somewhat familiar premise and as with most series, will be a key factor in its success.

Fortunately, CBS has done a good job putting the show together and it could enjoy a rather long run on the network. Look for Hawaii Five-O to hit the beach this Fall on Mondays at 10/9C on CBS. Until then, check out a preview of the show after the jump.

‘Star Wars: The Force Unleashed 2’ Official ‘Subject 1157’ Trailer

There’s no denying the success and appeal of the first Star Wars: The Force Unleashed game. It quickly rose to be the highest selling Star Wars franchise game ever and was universally praised for its high quality visuals and exciting gameplay. At the Spike VGAs, the first trailer was released for the game’s sequel, aptly named Star Wars: The Force Unleashed 2. But since the VGAs, news of the game has been sparse.

Lucas Arts has recently launched the game’s website which looks to take the viral route to promote the game. Connecting to Facebook, visitors can track the progress of Subject 1157 from inside his bacta tank, listening to audio logs and playing games to help uncover memories of Vader’s former apprentice.

Some notable questions come up through exploring the site. First and foremost is how the two games will be tied together, especially since there were two drastically different endings to choose from at the end of the first Force Unleashed and the aftermaths these lead to for the apprentice. Next comes the question of the dual lightsabers.

While we have seen this done in the past, these lightsabers are shown to be blue while traditionally within Star Wars, the Sith only use red. Does this mean the apprentice is no longer a pawn of the Dark Side? Finally, keep your ears tuned to the audio clue at the end of the trailer when a very familiar voice gives a foreboding warning to those who dare traverse down this game’s dark past.

Star Wars: the Force Unleashed 2 hits stores on October 26th, 2010. Check out all the pics and video after the jump.

‘The Walking Dead’ Zombies Revealed! Plus, Frank Darabont Talks Zombies

We’ve been pretty excited about AMC’s series The Walking Dead from director/writer/producer Frank Darabont since it was first announced. Actually, to be perfectly honest, we were reading rhe comics long before the TV series was a possiblity so we go way back. Fortunately, it looks like the TV series creative team is taking the small screen adaptation very seriously. How can I tell? The zombies man, the zombies.

Over at the official blog of the show they’ve posted the first look at the zombie make-up for some of the zombie “Walkers” and I have to say they look pretty cool. Of course, if you’re making a TV show about a zombie apocalypse and the aftermath, your zombies had better look cool. We’ve got a few of the pics here for you as well as video featuring series main man Frank Darabont.

The Walking Dead is based on a comic series created by Robert Kirkman and follows a group of survivors led by police officer Rick Grimes, who search the zombie controlled county for a safe and secure home. Along the way they encounter the worst of what’s left including zombies galore and humans at their worst. Filming on the six episode series begun yesterday in Atlanta with a premiere set for October of this year.

Check out some larger zombie pics and the interview with Frank Darabont after the jump. For more, head on over to the show’s official blog.

AT&T Cancels Unlimited Data For Smartphones, Announces New Rates

Well, it wass bound to happen sooner or later, especially with a company like AT&T. Change is, after all, inevitable. What am I talking about? Unlimited smartphone data from AT&T is a thing of the past. Or at least it will be soon.

Starting on June 7th, the company will introduce two new data plans to replace its current $30 unlimited smartphone plan. These new plans will, according to AT&T, make it “more affordable for more people to enjoy the benefits of the mobile Internet.” How nice of them.

Here’s the details on the new plans:

DataPlus
200MB of data for $15 per month. AT&T says this will be enough data to meet the needs of 65% of its smartphone users. Go over this limit and be charged $15 per 200MB.

DataPro
2GB of data for $25 per month. According to AT&T, only 2% of its smartphone customers use more than 2GB of data per month. Go over this limit and be charged $10 per GB.

First Renders of Chris Evans As ‘Captain America’ Leak Online

When it comes to news about Captain America: The First Avenger, we’ve been pretty conservative. It’s hard to not run just about every scoop that passes by our desks, given how excited we are for this film, but considering how early we are in the production, it’s hard to tell what’s real and what is just hopeful speculation.

A few days ago, word first hit the web about the illustrious costume that Chris Evans will be donning as the titular character. It started off as a first-hand account of sketches that they got over at Joblo. Those descriptions turned into a few fan sketches, which then turned into professional renders of the costume from our pals over at AICN. Talk about a collaborative effort.

As you can see after the jump, the costume resembles more of the Ultimates Cap rather than the “wing-eared pirate boots” look that fans knew and loved for nearly a century. The suit looks to be more modern than anything else, which means we could still see the old wing ears in the first half of the film. Given the costumes that Marvel has churned out in other films, we’re quite pleased it’s not black leather.

Joe Johnston’s Captain America: The First Avenger, slated for release on July 11, 2011, is currently shooting in London with Hayley Atwell, Sebastian Stan, and Hugo Weaving as Red Skull.

Sony Drops Prices on Many PSP and PSPGo Games

While the PSPGo might not be on the top of most gamer’s “must-have” lists, it definitely is about to jump a little higher in the ranks. Sony’s dishing out some great deals to make investing in this portable console even more affordable and appealing.

Starting this month, any PSPGo system purchased will come with a voucher for three downloads for the system absolutely free. This is an $80 value, and includes quality titles such as LittleBigPlanet, Ratchet and Clank: Size Matters and SOCOM: Fireteam Bravo 3.

It seems like Sony is finally figuring out how to deal with people who want to upgrade to the PSPGo, but don’t want to abandon their already assembled UMD collections. This way, gamers can start playing these free games as soon as they get their new PSPGo consoles at no cost to them. This deal will be running until March 31st, 2011.

Additionally,Sony’s permanently dropping the price on Ape Escape: On the Loose, Buzz! Master Quiz, Hot Shots Golf Open Tee, LocoRoco 2, Patapon 2, PixelJunk Monster Deluxe, SOCOM: Fireteam Bravo, Syphon Filter: Logan’s Shadow and Twisted Metal: Head On. These games are all being added to a new “Favorites” software line, and they will all be available for $9.99. Not bad.

Western Wednesdays: ‘Man in the Wilderness’

Forget 1980s action films, forget 300.  Westerns are the genre that set the highest and hardest expectations for manhood. I hesitate to say they’re unrealistic ones, though, since these are all things people actually did to survive.

Which is a very roundabout way of saying that I’m going to amend my “Dream Man” to be a Clint Eastwood kind of guy who can also survive the uncharted forests of the West with just a piece of twine. And one leg. A Zachary Bass, Man in the Wilderness kind of guy.

Man in the Wilderness takes place in 1820, and no further West than some dim point past Missouri and the Mississippi.   It’s not a period you see visited very often in the genre, and I suspect it’s because just contemplating it — vague regions still known only as “Spain”,  “Oregon Territory” and “Missouri Territory” — is rather terrifying.

Reading accounts of the first settlers is pretty harrowing, Heart of Darkness stuff.  There were forests back then, forests so thick you couldn’t get your wagon through without hacking for hours on end. And then you died of diphtheria.

If a bear didn’t get you first. That’s what happened to Zachary Bass (Richard Harris), and he knew what he was doing.
