Microsoft Releases Windows 7

microsoft-windows-7-boxes

Even though we might be pretty big fans of the stuff that comes from that other software and hardware company, we realize that a lot of people out there are also big fans of Microsoft’s Windows products. So, in the interest of fair and balanced reporting, we are pleased to let you know that the Redmond giant has today released the latest version of its operating system, dubbed Windows 7.

The new software arrives in stores today with much better word of mouth and reviews than Windows Vista, the previous version released a few years ago. The new operating system is designed to boot up faster, look cleaner and streamline the way people work with fewer clicks and fewer annoying notifications. Windows 7 is also said to work better with plug-in devices, like cameras. Setting up home networking to share photos and music is also supposed to be easier. Several versions of the software will be sold with prices starting around $120.

In the meantime, if you are thinking about upgrading to Windows 7, first run Microsoft’s free Upgrade Advisor to make sure that your current system’s hardware and software will still work. Over at Lifehacker they have a lot more tips about preparing for a Windows 7 install, including advice on setting it up alongside an earlier copy of Windows or on a Mac.

If you do decide to upgrade, be sure to let us know how it goes in the comments.

Official Posters for ‘The Road’ and ‘Youth In Revolt’ Released

TheRoad_1Sheet[2]We got quite a bit of different stuff sent to us here at The Flickcast. Some of it is pretty cool like trailers for upcoming movies, game videos, comics previews and things of that nature. We also get a lot of movie poster art sent to us and some of it is also pretty cool. Case in point are the two new “official’ posters for The Road and Youth in Revolt.

Both poster feature what so many do these days, large pictures of the principal actors and a clever or meaningful tag line. Also, both are different than previous posters that have been released for these films. In addition, on the poster for The Road, Mortensen is clearly holding a gun so you don’t think this is just a movie about people talking and, curiously, the names of the writer and director appear again in larger print at the bottom of the poster so they are clearly visible. This is, of course, an obvious attempt to make sure that people know who they are — particularly those who nominated and vote on the Oscars.

The Youth in Revolt Poster, at least to me, reminds me of the poster for Stanley Kubrick’s film Lolita, which I’ve included after the jump for comparison. I’m not sure what the marketing department at Dimension/Weinstein was trying to go for, but obviously some of them are Kubrick fans.

We’ve talked about these two films here before and you can expect a review of each of these films closer to their release dates. Until then, be sure to check out the larger versions of both posters after the jump. The Road opens on November 25th and Youth In Revolt opens on January 8th, 2010.

Fox to Bench ‘Dollhouse’ For November Sweeps?

eliza-dusku-dollhouse-gunYou can’t always put stock in what people say on Twitter. Sometimes, people just like to say stuff that isn’t true just to get attention or boost their number of “followers.” However, when someone who is supposedly “in the know” like us or Entertainment Weekly’s Michael Ausielo tweets something, people tend to listen and take it seriously. And given his reputation and insider knowledge, they should.

Case in point is Ausiello’s Twitter post from last night saying that he is hearing from sources that Fox will put episodes of Dollhouse on hold during the important November sweeps and then bring the show back after and air back to back episodes. Here’s what he said exactly:

“Exclusive: Hearing FOX will bench DOLLHOUSE for November sweeps and air back-to-back eps on Friday night in December.”

If true, it isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Maybe Fox wants to keep the show alive and so is actually doing it a favor by not having it air during sweeps so its less-than-stellar ratings won’t be a factor? Or, maybe Ausiello’s source simply got it wrong? To be honest, I hope its Fox actually trying to do a good thing and still give the show some kind of chance. Although, as much as I might want that to be the truth, I sure won’t hold my breath for it.

MTV Networks/Nickelodeon Buys ‘Ninja Turtles’

ninja-turtlesIt looks like the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have a new place to call home: MTV Networks and more specifically, Nickelodeon. According to Reuters, the network, the world’s number one for kids, acquired the rights today to the globally recognized, and phenomenally successful, Ninja Turtles property for roughly $60 Million.

The network plans to develop a new CG-animated television series based on the shelled superheroes, which will potentially debut sometime in 2012. In addition, the network is planning the release of brand new feature films starring the Turtles in partnership with Paramount Pictures and will also continue to work Playmates Toys on merchandising of the Turtles.

“Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles shares a comedic sensibility with the Nickelodeon DNA, with added layers of action and fantasy that have kept this property an evergreen favorite with multiple generations of audiences,” said Cyma Zarghami, President, Nickelodeon/MTVN Kids and Family Group. “We are extremely happy to have the opportunity to be able to focus on this property and creatively re-introduce it to a new generation of kids.”

“Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is a property that maintains a very passionate global fan base, is rich with opportunity for a tentpole movie, and is exactly the right property for us to work together with Nickelodeon,” said Adam Goodman, President, Paramount Pictures.

Actually, TMNT and Nick seem like a great partnership. TMNT has always seemed more of a kids thing to me and for it to be on Nickelodeon and then have a brand new movie from Paramount should continue to expand the appeal of these characters for a long time to come.

The Flickcast

flickcast-logo-smallAs is sometimes the case, shows need to be examined and, when necessary, changes need to be made to improve them. Or, things change for other good reasons and you just need to go with it and try to make things even better. But no matter what, change is inevitable. So, in that spirit, we’re taking the week off from the podcast so no new episode today. Sorry for the inconvenience.

We will return next week with a brand new episode of The Flickcast, so be sure and be here for that. You won’t want to miss it.

Until then, to help you pass the time until next week’s show, be sure to check out a few of our previous episodes we think feature us at our best. Or, at least, are not quite as embarrassing as the others. Plus, take a nostalgic listen to how it all began by going back and reliving the glory that was our very first episode.

Until next week, thanks for listening. We appreciate it.

Dave’s Weekly Comic Book Recommendations

Jeez, a whole lot of nothing this week.  I can safely say I will be buying THREE books this week.  47_invincible_iron_man_19

From Marvel, I’ll buy the final issue to “World’s Most Wanted” in Invincible Iron Man. I don’t know, they milked the story into what, thirteen parts? Who cares! The previous issue finally went farther than “I’m Tony Stark and I convinced a computer to give me Alzheimer’s so I can save all of the heroes on the list I created from Norman Osborn.” You know he’s going to get it all restored at the end of this issue, but I just want to see how actually ends.

There’s another Deadpool book, its by the far the funniest and wild and that’s Victor Gischler’s Deadpool: Merc with a Mouth.  I say that if Daniel Way (who is doing a stellar job on the main Deadpool book) leaves the book he should be replaced by Gischler.

And the last book I’ll be getting is Joss Whedon and Fabio Moon’s Sugarshock.  This originally premiered on Myspace Dark Horse presents and it was a wild ride.  This is the Joss Whedon we all know and love, and is a truly wonderfully fun story.

Other than that, this week is a pretty light load.  I suppose there is plenty of Blackest Night books and Dark Reign books but I haven’t been reading those spinoffs so its disingenuous for me to recommend them. As always, we here at The Flickcast care about what you read, so leave us a comment and let us know what you liked/didn’t like from this week’s comics. For a more complete list of what comes out this week, check out the one at Midtown Comics.

Newer, Hipper ‘Wolfman’ Trailer Hits Web

BenicioWolfmanIf you were debating whether or not you wanted to see Benicio Del Toro in Wolfman because it was too folky and epic, how would you like it if the film was set to a generic rock tune?

Well, Universal Pictures answered your prayers with the newest trailer for Wolfman. It’s got more Benicio, more Wolf, and a Marilyn Manson soundtrack.

The film itself has had quite a tumultuous post-production. Originally, the film was set to have Mark Romanek (One Hour Photo) as director, who later stepped down. Then, the studio met with names like Brett Ratner, Frank Darabont, James Mangold, and Martin Campbell, until finally deciding on Joe Johnston (The Rocketeer).

Once finished, the film bounced around with three separate release dates, two being in 2009, and then finally sticking to a release of February, 2010. It’s on record that January and February is where movies go to die.

Either way, check out the cool new trailer after the jump, and catch Benicio and the gang in theaters on February 12, 2010.
